So I asked Donald Young...

but why that one ? i remember hitting with that frame, it is not the best racket made by head

That is your opinion!!

In My opinion the best Head racquets ever made are in no particular order is the Prestige Pro, Prestige Pro 600, Prestige Classic 600, and Pro Tour 630.

By the way the Pro Tour 630 is the most popular Head racquet on the ATP Tour Today.

Why did he dump it ? was it too powerful for him ?

Not sure, only viewed images of him using it online. I think it was for a short period. I know the Prestige line is a lot more stable than the Instinct...maybe that was the reason...?

Technically, his groundies and volleys are not bad. And, at the college level, I think they were probably pretty solid. But, with the speed of the pro game, how your opponent robs you of time once you hit a ball, etc...well, his size and lack of speed and footwork just truly hinders his groundies. His form was great on everything--just always a step behind when hitting against a guy with solid groundies and good footwork. I really would have liked to see Young vs. Isner and how the groundie exchange would have went..
Interesting thanks. Nice to hear from someone who saw it in person

yea you are right. Now that he is serving in the 120's fairly consistantly, he doesn't need that extra power anymore, i suppose.

As far as DY not knowing the racquet model, that doesn't surprise me at all. I've known some pro golfers who are utterly clueless about equipment. The rep hands them a few things they say what they like and don't like after hitting them and voila--they put something in the bag. I imagine DY was given several different frames to try when he signed on as a Head pro. At any point he was unhappy the process could be repeated. If you think about it, if Head doesn't tell him what he's playing, he doesn't have to lie. Everyone is happier with not knowing, see? It's probably a good lesson for all us equipment nerds--worry more about playing and less about equipment.

That said, the pros do get all the best toys!

Why doesn't Head just make the old PT630 again or paint it up and call it a microgel? Why do they have to make the new Prestiges noticeably stiffer than the old? I mean isn't that what the Radicals and the Instincts are for? Shouldn't a Prestige be very soft and flexy? I don't get it :-(

Oh and a question for the OP: I thought the new Microgel Prestige and the old PT630 mold were so similar that they would look the same to the naked eye. What did you mean about the "boxy" thing of the PT630 being obviously different than a Microgel?

The hoop of the MG is more aerodynamic in terms of build, such as the APD. The stick in DY's hands this weekend had a hoop that looked just like any Prestige (or version of it) ever made. If you look at the image of DY I posted of him waiting to receive serve, you will see how boxed the hoop is.

As for DY, he does not get a lot of money from neither Nike nor Head. I have read articles stating that they offered him some 'assistance' in his junior years, and are happy to have him sign with them, but he is not receiving the same financial backing as, say, Andre Agassi. There is an image within this thread that shows his Nike shoes. They have tape on them holding them together. I think that both Nike and Head are happy to furnish him with some free gear, maybe offset some expenses for travel, but not yet willing to provide him the big bucks until he is proven on the ATP tour for a while. He had some signs of potential this summer and I would assume if he can have some more runs like this summer, maybe Nike will give him some more shoes...

For one, the MG Rad does not have a grommet system surrounding the hoop. And second, the MG is aero in shape in the hoop--the stick in DY's hand is not. Hope this helps with the previous question posed to me...

Wasn't interested in his mom. I was more interested in what was under the paint of his sticks....lol.

I got you. What I meant was that most dads travel with their kid pro. But in DY's case, it's the other way around. I don't know any male pro who has his mom travel with him and act as his coach. Do you? No, I am not interested in his mom either, just curious.

From the interviews in magazines, such as Tennis mag, she has shunned a lot of outside help--including that of the USTA, claiming she knows DY's game better than anyone. I think she wants as many hands out of the dish as possible in case DY comes to high rankings and large paychecks. She calls herself his coach...I wonder what her tennis background is in terms of results. Although, Richard W. didn't have a great tennis career and look what he did with his daughters....

Atlanta hosts some good tennis players. Considering Isner came out of that world in his college days, I would safely assume they have access to good facilities.

I had the opportunity to speak with Mrs Young a few times during the Sacramento Challenger (she remembered me from the year before). She is DY's primary coach and she is also his guardian (since he was underage until recently). They do get help from the USTA but its usually a coach that is also at the same tournament and it has varied throughout the year (which is confusing, I'm sure). I beleive that David Nainkin was assigned to him in late Spring, but David has not been able to travel for a while for personal reasons.

DY's father stays at home in GA most of the time to run the tennis facility that they own. It's a large job I'm sure. As for the (cynical) money comment, they have an agent, Mrs Young handles the management and coaching, and they get help from the USTA with additional coaching. They pay expenses for 2-3 people each week they are on the road, so yeah, I can believe that they are keeping an eye on their family finances. Seriously, if you were a pro in his position, how many people do you think you would have on the payroll?

As for her credentials, she does and did play tennis. I don't know what level she is or was at, I never asked. But she knows his games, she knows his moods, and she knows how to handle the chaos around them (lessons learned the hard way, I'm sure). Yes, she is protective of him and she should be, as would any mother, manager, or coach with a young prodigy. There was a time last year when he almost quit playing because the pressure got to him, but he decided that he really does want to be out there. I can understand that Mrs Young wants to take whatever precautions she can now to make sure he does not become a burnout. More power to her.

If the USTA assigns a coach to DY, I don't think he is under any obligation to pay the coach or the USTA anything if he becomes a top player. So, I don't see why his mother would be left out of anything (unless he "fires" her because the coach was so good).

Some parents have ego's. Such as Richard W. They don't want any outside influence tampering with their child prodigy. From what I have read/heard, Nick B. and his camp have offered some assistance in the past. There is a show called "Phenoms" (you can find it on youtube) in which staff at the Nick B. Acadamy has left an open door policy to DY and his mother. Not sure if they have continued that path or only when he was around 14-16.

Shunning the USTA, free coaching/assistance, and Nick B. and his staff says something about the 'control' DY's mother wants to have on DY. It is unfortunate, because parents sometimes have the blinders on when it comes to their children and what is best. We as parents may think we know best, but that is not always the case.

I know if the USTA was providing 50K, a coach, and Nick B. wanted to help my daughter and get her on tour with great results, I would have to be the dumbest father/parent on the planet to turn it down and say I can do a better job of managing and coaching my daughter...

What kumta was referring to is if DY might be using a real MG Prestige MP.

How can you tell the difference between a Microgel Prestige MP and a PT630?

Have you seen a real Microgel Prestige MP?
I sat right behind DY mother at the pilot pen. I knew he was using the PT630 just from the thumping sound of when the frame was making contact with the ball, I will try to take photos but can tell you that the MG Prestige MP appears through decals and graphics to be more oval even though it is not. Overall the beam width is thinner by .5mm but that is not visible to the naked eye unless you have a digital caliper. Also paint variance can make a frame thicker. I have not tested other MG Prestige MP only one.

Even though the MG Prestige line is much better IMO than the previous models they are not like the classics. Some may like the MG Prestige line better. It is too early to tell. We will know more around spring time what/how the majority feels.
You know there is no such thing as a free lunch. I have heard that IMG always want your winning, endorsement money afterwards. I don't know the percentage but I have heard that the % is not small. I met a father who turned it down. As far as scholarship goes, IMG wants you to pay back when you turned pro and make money on the tour. What kind of scholarship is that? I can't confirm this but that is what I have heard.

I thought the photo I took and the photo off the TW site was pretty explainatory. DY said he was using the "old blue one" during the open and smiled in a hint that he still is. I would say being five feet away from him was close enough to know a PJ. And, since DY has almost always used the "old blue one" and PJ's, it is safe to assume he still is. I am not sure whom Head is handing out MG Prestige's to...but I would bet the mortgage that DY did not have a MG Prestige MP in his hand this weekend...

Saram: you misunderstood me. I didn't think or suggest DY was using a MG Prestige--I certainly believe what you reported he said: that it's a PT630. What I was saying is that I think you can't tell any visual difference between an MG Prestige and a PT630 with the naked eye. The molds are so similar. Michael has seen and measured both and seems to concur that you couldn't tell them apart with the naked eye... I've seen and hit with the MG Prestige MP myself and while I don't have a PT630 to compare it directly, I have seen a couple PT630 in my stringer's shop, and they sure look the same to my eye... including the hoop area.

I would think that's why Head changed the Prestige mold for the MG line--the better to hide the pro's choice PT630 under their current retail "Prestige" paintjob. With the LM and FXP Prestige it was easy to spot the paintjob PT630s underneath. Not so anymore it would seem.

Rumor (on TW) has it that the new MG Prestige sticks will be 16x20. The stick here is still 18x20. As well, the PJ on the stick is just plain jane--nothing to it. No specs within the throat that a non-PJ would have. Most PJ's caught in photos have the basic components of the new model's paint scheme, but the PJ's always leave something out. Head has been notorious for their PJ's and the simplicity of them in the past.

I understand what you are saying. It sure would be nice if people that have held, measured, and analyzed a new MG Prestige would post some photos. I remember a thread just recently where someone posted an image of a broken one, promised more images, and non followed as promissed. I never implied DY is using a PJ now. I asked about during the US Open as it was obviously a PJ in the images. I think that when I opened the door in the conversation, DY would have stated he was now using an MG if he was. It would have been the perfect opportunity to promote the new stick.

Instead of offering up the stick, letting people see it, show off the new one and leave people and Head Prestige fanatics drooling and waiting until January to purchase one, he continued to talk about the "old blue one", its feel, how he fell in love with it, etc.

He never said he was currently using a PJ, and I never wanted to put him on the spot and ask him. My assumption though, is DY is still using a PJ.

And, last thought before turning in for the night is this in regards to DY's PJ's. Has anyone ever wondered why he uses sticks based on the principles of the Prestige line and yet uses Radical PJ schemes?

The reason is obvious. The market base that DY is going to corner is that of young players, flashy players, and most likely--players with smaller stature. Juniors, kids, and small adults, in general, cannot wield around the mass of the Prestige line/sticks for four hours of play without becoming tired, etc.

Head has probably already thought of this and tried to cater to the younger and smaller audience by putting the Radical PJ on his sticks rather than the Prestige line. Just about every 14-16 year old that picks up a Prestige mid or MP and tries to play three sets with it will hate it. No power, just control and over 12oz strung. Yet every young person out there picking up a Radical will be able to maneuver its mass with more success.

Thus, the Radical PJ and not the Prestige PJ which would be much more concealed in the past...

Just my rambling thoughts, though...

There are three versions of the Microgel Prestige:
1. The Microgel Prestige Mid which is a 18x20 string pattern that uses the Prestige Classic 600 mold.
2. The Microgel Prestige MidPlus in 18x20 which looks to be the same mold as the Pro Tour 630.

NO it is not, you are not comparing apples to apples the photo you posted off TW website is of a stock MG radical MP, DY uses a CAPED PT 630 Mold, so a picture of the MG Prestige MP is more appropriate or even a CAPED MG RADICAL in this case.

16X20 ?!?!?! Rumor?!?!? where have you been?!?!?! When was the last time you visited the racquet section, please do a search under my name. The MG prestige is coming out in January with three models, a Mid Plus with 18X20, a MidPlus Pro with 16X19 and a Mid with 18X20. I had all three with me right now, for a month now. Just because there are no specs on the throat does not mean he is not using a real MG prestige MP. Got any other clue that the PJ's always leave something out in regards specifically to the MG Prestige MP.

VS here you go you know what I mean,

This a photo of an Austrian PT630 with TK57 CAPS and next to it is the Chinese Microgel Prestige Mid Plus with TK 238 CAPS.

Notice the wells or indentation in the frame of the PT where the CAP's end how they are wider and deeper while on the Microgel Prestige MP they are shorter narrower and shallow. If I see that on DY frame then I can be sure %100 percent what it is besides the obvious measurements that I took of the beam width. Not sure but I have gone over this with you before but could not explain it well, my bad.

I now what you are saying. The MG Prestige Mid has TK 237 C.A.P. grommets and the Prestige Classic 600 has TK 52 C.A.P. Grommets. So I guess Head did not ship over the real molds of the racquets or the Grommets to the OEM in China. I think this is interesting.

Let me try to explain this to you. It is a Pro Tour 630 with a paint job of the new Microgel Radical Midplus. The number 630 refers to the headsize of the racquet in cm2. In English measurements it is 98sq.in.
Now back in the 90's you had more than one racquet was made using the mold that the Pro Tour 630 uses. I am going to stop there because I feel like I might start to confuse you.

Possibly but why was he using LM prestige PJ's before with Head Pro room but caps and decals. Besides the SW of the NEW prestige MP Pro is very light in the low 300 lower than the MG radical. The MG prestige MP is only 5 points heavier than the MG Radical MP

According to the Head pro players, the PT 630 is the best Head racquet ever. Even Djoko is using a PT 630 clone made by Wilson. Who needs to get fired at Head so that we can once again buy it in stores? Did the idiot who came up with the flexpoint imbecility got fired already? How about the one who lost Djoko to Wilson? Wilson had been going after Djokovic for years, even a company like Head would have had ALOT of trouble keeping him from Wilson when he was being offered a better contract and being persistantly told that he could be getting more money for a stick that Wilson could make him an almost exact copy of.

I blame the person who is the head of the company, Johan Eliasch. He has the ultimate authority.

Well said. I was just curious about why DY's mom travels with him instead of the dad. I know that they have a tennis facility but the dad can travel as well. That's a personal choice. But I can understand about being protective. She has every reason to be so.

Are you sure??

I'm sure that at the professional level, they are about as horrid and errant as anything I have seen. If he is the next great American hope, as was written in Tennis Magazine, then American tennis is in trouble. I'd rather put stock in DY and his game than Isner's serve any day.

that was absolutely ridiculous....poor form.

Wow saram, for a split second there I thought you were Donald Young's mom. Over protective, aren't we? Relax but I'm not taking back what I said. It is a black, hip-hop thang!
