He had a 2001 Ford Explorer with 200,000 miles on it. It would cost us 3000 to repair so he going to buy another car. But, he has no idea what he wants to get so i need ur car knowledge. Here is some things that may help.

-works 40 minutes away from house
-we live in massachusetts
-have a dog that we like to take to the beach
-my dad visits job sites occasionaly
-we travel alot in the car
-new or used
-anything up to 20,000-35,000 in price

thanks for the help

I think there are somy hybrid SUVs available. If he works 40 minutes away from home, it could save a lot of gas money to go with a hybrid. I'd suggest a car, but SUVs are better (in my opinion) in the snow, or with wet dogs. :)

I have a cousin who has about the same situation as you. He has a Great Pyrenees which is enormous. He has a Subaru Forester. Its a great car. My dad has a subaru with 275,000 miles on it and all he's ever had to do is oil changes and typical matienence.

I would look into the Kia Sportage. They are safe, great for distance (ie. very good on gas), are nice to look at and roomy for the family, your dog and luggage. They are very affordable...a new model starting at the low end of your dad's budget. Something to think about anyway.

That's a solid sportwagon. 5 stars in safety. It's all-wheel drive, too. Not as cool as the German models it probably competes with, but way more reliable and sensible. Consumer Reports 'raves' about it.

I think they are probably selling off the 08s right now. The all-new, more SUV-ish 09 model is coming soon.

^^^I have a corolla now, and its a tank. Nothing ever goes wrong with it.

When I get out of college and get my job want 2 buy a Subaru Impreza Wrx STI, 2003+. They just look totally awesome. gotta get it in black.

Oh speaking of Toyotas, the FJ Cruiser is cheap and reliable for a fancy SUV. It's a serious gas guzzler, but probably no more so than your pop's Explorer. It handles well ... for a truck.

Not sure if this one is under $35k, but the Acura RDX is awesome. A little smaller than the Explorer, but it is solid. AWD, turbo, and all kinds of features. Dolled up CRV, which is an elevated station wagon.

I saw a new Infiniti small SUV called the EX-something. Looks like it is built on the Nissan Rogue platform. Both really nice. I saw a Rogue, well-equipped for under $25k. Then there's the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CRV. Can't really go wrong with the good Japanese cars.

I hear good things now about Suzuki, KIA and Hyundai, too. Some of the Mazdas are worth a look, too.

Consumer Reports seems to love BMW and Audi performance, but in overall terms, they only seem to fawn all over Lexus/Toyota, Acura/Honda and Infiniti/Nissan. And Subaru of course. Best picks, recommended...those sorts of words only go the way of the Japanese automakers.

The other car sites seem to sprinkle enough praise to Ford, GM and Chrysler, MB, VW, Volvo et al.

Good luck Bray. Let us know.
Oh, and re: dealers and salesmen, I'm sure your dad knows the drill, but you guys ought to do a search for 'undercover car salesman' on Edmunds. It's an interesting piece.

Use the web for good pricing, obviously.

After test drives, I'd recommend going in to buy a car on a bad weather day. If it's a slow day for the dealer, the finance manager and the salesman are more likely to give you a good deal.

hmm snowy roads, i suggest the subaru forester too, subarus are great since they have all wheel drive and are super dependable, they also have decent gas mileage, other suvs to consider would be the toyota highlander or 4runner, but they r pretty expensive and have not so decent gas mileage, the volvo v50 stationwagon seems like a good fit too, but it is again pricey

we are going to look at volvo xc90's and VW Tourque (sp.) tomorrow anything on these guys

both are solid cars, but arent they out of ur price range? isnt their starting price like 35k? personally i would not get the tourque is dat the right spelling because that thing looks like a heavy gas guzzler

do u mind spending a lot for gas, again i would suggest subaru or a japanese automaker, because their cars have a bit better gas mileage

Subaru all the way. Very high consumer satisfaction rating. People hang on to them for years.

Outback is roomy, handles well, and should be good for 250,000 miles. Right within the right price range for used...4WD is super if driving in snowy conditions is a factor.

I'm with poundcat. I think Subarus are amazing. They just do not appeal to the average person who digs German cars or American SUVs, so their market share is pretty small. Too bad, they make topnotch automobiles. If they want to quit being a niche brand, they might need to do what Toyota and Honda did, unveiling a premium/luxury badge. Pure marketing...viola: Lexus and Acura. Brilliant.

Suggestions for Subaru:

Keep the constellation logo, but put a couple of umlauts over the U's and slap some chrome on the sills.

Maybe upgrade the interior materials and call it a day.

Ditch the constellation logo and go with a big S for SUPERoo.

Add an SPT division to the company: (Subaru Performance Tuning), like BMW's M or MercedesBenz's AMG tuning haus.

BTW, thanks to a really low total cost of ownership, you can get a premium Forester with a ridonkulously huge sunroof for about half a BMW X3.

Subarus are pretty popular in northern New England.

I have 150K on my Toyota Avalon and Subaru is definitely a consideration for my next vehicle. I don't have a good reason to replace the Avalon though and the nearest Subaru dealer is a bit far away for my tastes.

bought a ford explorere yesterday couldn't get away from his comfort zone this is his third in a row. Very nice though but mileage is around 16-17:(. Everything else is nice though.

The VW Touraq has crappy milage- BUT ALSO- if you REALLY want a laugh, ask them- "How much are each of those tires to replace"? try @ $550. per

You can luck out on cetain Mitsubitsi wagons- get an older Ford taurus wagon

The truth is buy a used transmission and keep the Explorer, if he is happy with everything else about it.
