Looks like maybe I'll have to change strings.

I'm getting to the end of my Pro Supex Big Ace Micro reel & although I would love to reorder more of the same, I'm thinking that I should probably move to something else. I love the way this string plays! It has tons of pop and feel. I find it to be the ideal string for an all-courter, since it provides a lot of control from the baseline and plenty of feel from the net. Unfortunately I'm having two problems with this string (at least I think I am):

1) I'm breaking it like crazy. Yesterday I broke strings in 3 racquets. My strokes are improving & I'm hitting the ball harder & better than ever. When I was experimenting with strings I was tesing out almost all 17g's & I found the BA 17 to last much longer than anything else that I had tried. Since it lasted so long, I gave the Micro a try once it was released & I found it to last longer than the Topspin Cyber Power 17g that I was using at the time. I also liked the way that it played more than the CP 17, so I went ahead & ordered a reel. I suppose that I could try out the 18g BA, but I probably shouldn't because of problem #2.

2) I'm in the proccess of trying to change my service motion. Of course making changes means that discomfort is inevitable. My arm, from my elbow to my shoulder have been in a bit of pain due to poor timing & flawed mechanics. I know that this is probably going to go on for a while, since the serve is such a labor intensive stroke to renovate. I'm thinking that maybe I should switch to something more forgiving than a poly for the time being.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

You could try a hybrid with the BA Micro in the mains and a solid core synthetic in the crosses (Gosen OG Micro, PSGO etc)...it will increase comfort and the thicker cross will not saw into the mains so much.

Also Head RIP Control is a durable multi with good spin, control and low power..

So you love Big Ace Mirco in 17G but are breaking them too often. Is that correct? What about the 16g? Have you tried it yet? Seems like a logical adjustment if you enjoy the string as much as you indicate.

Buy one pack to test it out, then if it's not what your after go to a differnt manufacturer.

Big Ace Micro is 1.15mm...

Put gut on the crosses with the micro string. There is a high chance you will have more durability than the full job poly. And you are playing with such a thin string so don't expect 10 hours+ out of it. Try the 1.25mm which is 0.10mm thicker. But if you said you have arm problems, you need a soft string on the cross (or mains). I suggest gut if you can get it.

Thanks for your suggestions!! If I was going to do gut, I think that I'd do the Legend/Iso Pro hybrid. I've tried it a few times and I really loved it & it lasted a while.

How much longer will big ace 1.17mm last over 1.15mm

Why don't you try out the 1.17 BA? It should be a little more durable at the least. It's very comfortable and the touch is good from all areas of the court. If that doesn't work, I would go up to the 1.22 BA, it's equally good and the durability should be much better. When you mentioned that that you were using the 17G BA, which size were you referring to? Supex offers so many sizes: 1.28, 1.25, 1.22, 1.17 and 1.15. The 1.28 is a good bit stiffer over the 1.25 so I would steer clear of that in light of you changing your service motion.

I've used the 1.25 before. That's what the strings depot has labeled as 17g. I didn't see a 1.17 mm. Where have you seen that one? I think that I might try the 1.22. Thanks guys!

You'll like the 1.22. The 1.17BA just came out over seas and is not yet available (but will be soon) over here. It's a really nice string but since you've been breaking lately, I would go the 1.22 route. The reason I asked is that supex seems to classify their string gauges a little differently so it's easier to use metric in their case. Good luck

Usually 17 gauge is considered 1.25 +- 1-2 mm. The 1.22 is like a 17L.

17 is 1.20 - 1.24mm
17L is 1.16-1.20mm

Do you think that the change from 1.15 to 1.22 will be drastic enough that I would need to try out a set before ordering a reel? I mean considering how much I like the micro is there much of a chance that I might not like the 1.22?

No one can answer that question for you. It is the same string after all so you should like it.

Yeah, you're right--I'm just trying to avoid paying for shipping for a single set of string if it's unnecessary.

I would say to try out a set first, I've heard somewhere on this board that the material on Micro is different from normal BA to allow such a thin gauge.

The material is still the same. The color is the difference.

I would go for just a few packs to see if you like it. The boys in Florida are usually very reasonable about exchanging stuff that you are unhappy with. You never know til you try: it's like me and blue gear: I love the 1.28 but don't care for the 1.25...
