Guys, I saw in other threads that you know much about the WCT events. Have you a list of the tornaments with the winners (and dates of course)? I know just a little: like a posted in another thread, the ATP don't "count" the WCT Challenge Cup played along the 70's. Thank you!

Legend
The regular WCT events, which lead to the WCT finals at Dallas (they should originally be played at MSG New York) were 20 in 1971, with Laver, Rosewall, Newcombe each winning 4. Laver finished first in the points table with Okker second and Rosewall third, Ashe, Drysdale, Newcombe, Rissen and Lutz behind them. Newcombe was injured for the later part of the season. In 1972, the last 10 of 1971 and new 10 events counted for the WCT finals, now played in May. Laver (with 5 new wins) again finished first with Rosewall second. Then they played an autumn circuit with finals at Rome. Newcombe was the point leader, and Ashe the finals winner. In 1973, two groups were operating from January to May with 11 events for each group. Smith won one group (over Laver), Rosewall and Ashe the second. In 1974 three groups played. One was won by Newcombe over Smith, one by Ashe over Laver, Borg, Kodes. In 1975, three groups were operating, one won by Ashe over Borg, one by Laver, one by Riessen (i think). While they were reduced to play from January to May by an agreement with the ITF, WCT overexpanded with its separate groups. Both factors contributed to its ultimate downfall.

To add context. I believe a major part of the allure of the WCT events was big prize money. That may, if I recall correctly, also had something to do with the downfall as I believe TV and ticket revenues could not keep up. Lamar Hunt was the big backer and likey used much of his own money to finance the WCT. I also vaguely remember certain players did not like to play those events. Did some players boycott or refuse to play WCT?

Legend
Lamar Hunt got into tennis in 1967, when he founded the pro group WCT, the 'handsome eight', with Newcombe, Roche, Drysdale, Pilic and others. The fisrt years 68 and 69 were financial failures, but since 1970, when he attracted other pros like Laver, Rosewall, Ashe and Okker, his WCT became a big success. It was the first well organized pro series over the whole world, with a real points race (20 events with 32 draws minimum), real good prize money and big TV coverage. His impact was great, but conflicted with the interests of the ITF and ATP. Both rivalling organizations (not the least Jack Kramer himself) tried all they could to shut Hunt and WCT out of the game. They reduced the WCT series to a spring series from January to May, and tried to keep leading players away from the WCT. In the early 80s, the WCT series faded away with only 16 men draws (but still big money).

Does anyone have more complete results for the first event listed here? I can't find anything about Borg winning in Montreal in 1978. It says he won there in 1979 in numerous places, including ITF and Wikipedia.

Keep with wiki, itf and atp web pages, maybe you learn a little bit! At least I go to all events played in my country, and see ALIVE all the matches. Come to Paris and I'll kick your a.. in my tennis club, cuase I'm pretty sure that you never pick up a raquet in your life.

It's true that WCT events don't count with points to ATP?
The WCT had a winner by year like the Grand Prix? Can anyone help me with the info?

Yes! I write in a local newspaper, only about tennis -I live 10km from Paris, in a very small town (900 people!)-. I wish that people don't think only in Roger, Rafa or Nole. Thank you anyway &4!

Yes, its true the WCT events(& the Masters) did not count for atp ranking. And the WCT did have their own rankings as well.

And then the Grand Prix had their own ranking as well.

It really was chaos back then.

The WCT had point system independent of the ATP and Grand Prix rankings. In the first two years there were three finals and three final standings and the 8 finalists for the finals were taken from the rankings. All the players played in the same tournaments for the first two years.

Thanks, Andrew. I had put the stats out of my head. For 1975 i must look at the 1976 edition of World of Tennis. I remember, that Ashe lead one group over Borg(and got a golden ball for overall most points) and Laver another (he won 4 events and 23 matches in a row). In 1976 i still think, that Ashe won the most points. But he lost to Solomon at the Dallas finals, which Borg won over Vilas.I know, that they reduced the regular events to 16 men draws. The Philadelphia opener with a big draw was won by Connors.

One remark on the lists posted by Andrew. If you look at the 1971 points standing of the WCT, you may notice, that the field at that time was pretty deep, reaching into the top twenties. You have pretty good players like Roger Taylor and Fred Stolle on 19 and 20. Taylor was in the sf of Wimbledon in 1967, 1970 and 72, and Stolle was a hall of famer. By 1971 he was a bit over the hill, but still able to beat the leading player Newcombe at USO in 1972.

Not rivalry! You got passion and got your points and beliefs. That's all. And what i say about playing tennis is true, if you come to Paris we can play (I'm a fat and very poor player, I admit!).
And people enjoy your posts (like me).
Greetings (you see, i'm not bad at all):)

You should have extended the invitation last Spring. I was in Paris in May/June.

The part about you being fat sounds like a trap. You're clearly trying to get me to relax and underestimate you. All things considered, we would have to incorporate a table tennis match. For the record, I am 'terrible' at table tennis. wink.

llgc8080, because you're from France, I recommend you to obtain this tennis book for more info about the old tournaments:

Michel Sutter, Vainqueurs 1946-2003, Paris, 2003.
