Nadal's shoulder hurt?

Nadal had his shoulder wrapped today against Lopez, the after the match he really lashed out at the ATP again describing the health dangers of the calendar, does anyone know about the injury and how serious it is? I feel like him randomly lashing out today is probably a result of frustration from the injury, any details appreciated...thanks in advance.

He doesn't HAVE to play in those events. So any supposed health risks he undertakes are his own responsibility.

The point he makes is a fair one (though one that's been beaten to death).

Yea, why is Nadal playing so many tournaments? Last year, he played too many as well. What for, just to get closer to Fed in the rankings but still probably not take #1? Even if it could give him #1, so what? In the grand scheme of things, what matters is how many slams he wins...if he sacrifices his health to get to #1, but that hurts his ability to win slams, he'll be worse off.

Nadal obviously doesn't have a great team around him, because a great team would tell him when enough is enough.

Of course his shoulder hurts, so does mine and I only play twice a week.:)

Seriously, the things these guys do to their bodies is crazy, pro hockey players retire with less injuries than most ATP players.

No joke. Hockey players have amazingly long careers considering the punishment they go through. Part of that is do to the fact that you have to be a tough mo-fo to play pro hockey.

Tennis, especially these days, requires so much from the joints in the legs and hitting arm. It makes you really respect guys like Bjorkman and Santoro.

He's just being a girl, nobody makes him play. If he's so bothered, maybe he should skip Hamburg, then he'd have a nice break before RG.

he maybe is out to get some attention by this wrapping of the shoulder.. his point is correct but again , it is up to him to decide his tournys on clay vs. the health of his body ...

similiarly the summer late summer hard court season here in the US can tear up the body for any pro playing all of the tournys .

I believe Barcelona being his own country he had to or felt he had to play - don't remember the details.

Agree with your post basically.

Or maybe for clay-court specialists the tours are fitted into a small time-frame while for others they are spread out --- just thinking aloud. Does he have a lot of points to defend frm these tours. Were they more spaced out in previous years?

If a player has to skip a master series to be in form for a gran slam then there s something wrong with the calendar.

The claycourt season may be a little compressed, but clay-court specialists, including Nadal, should thank their lucky blessings. There are a lot of clay-tournaments, the clay season is quite long. Compare that to the unfortunately short grass-court season, where there are few tournaments and the season is very short.

And hard court specialist should be even more thankful that the hard court season is even longer.

Actually if he skipped Barcelona he would have enough time to recuperate and be well-set for the French. However it's his home-country tournament so he doesn't want to skip it. Yes the schedule is screwed but he should play smart and make the adjustment.

That's a great point. What the ATP should be doing is demoting some of these smaller clay event to challengers. They should do the same with hardcourts as well. Open up the schedule for the big tournaments. I don't see why there has to be tennis played every week of the season. Give these guys a chance to take a break.

Yes that's an interesting point. Nadal recently also said that "Barcelona is the biggest tournament in the world" which obviously is a load of crap. But I guess to him it is a huge event. And it does attract the best field in a claycourt event outside of Masters. But yeah if he can skip Valencia, he could also skip this. He does get to play in Madrid every year.

the clay season is very long. too many masters all in a row few breaks for small tournies. and then immediately is the short grass season and wimbledon. thats just insane. they really need to have another week between the french and wimby.

No it's not. It is very short and too many events in a short time are unfair. They need to spread it out and give Clay the proper respect it deserves. I think the first half of the year should be dedicated to clay courts.

I want to see clay back in the fall, frankly. We used to have a number of high profile events in the fall.

Now there is talk of Africa possiby getting a couple of events. Mr. Disney will predictably give them one or two on hardcourts, instead of coming up with a potentially lovely fall-stretch of clay tennis.

One of IW/Miami should be on American clay. Women still play on American clay. Men should as well.

2009 doesn't look too bad. Monte Carlo/Rome/Madrid will be great tennis. Hamburg will highlight the summer. If any of these are best-of-five that will only bode better.

Nadal come from Majorca, but his club is Real Club de Tenis Barcelona, where Barcelona´s tournament takes place. That´s a reason to don´t skip. Robredo an Feliciano Lopez are also players of same club.

Not sure how true this is, but a friend was in Barcelona when the final of Wimbledon was on last year and alot of the local people were cheering for Federer as there is alot of rivalry between Barcelona and Mallorca, also the fact that Nadal is a Real Madrid supporter isn't going to help him much in Barcelona.

If it's true then I think it's a bit strange he's playing, especially as the tape on his shoulder looks pretty nasty.

Well that's a bad excuse.

He's willing to play a few weeks before the biggest tournament of his year because fans at a smaller event treat him like a rock star? :confused:

Judging by the tape on his shoulder, a week off before Rome would of been a wise move.

When you think how well Federer is treated in Halle and how he chose to miss it last year to help him win his 5th Wimbledon.. Maybe that says alot.

Nadal will not win the French Open this year. I don't know who is going to beat him, but the elite want Fed to win, and it will be arranged.
