Division 1 tennis question.

I'm a junior. Going on to be a sophmore in high school. I'm a pretty high ranked national kid, and wondering what rating's most of the players in D1 college tennis have.

Thanks for answering.

First now is the time for you to start doing research as where you want to go to school - ignore current school rankings, coaches (they do come and go for the most part)....look at schools you will be happy at for 4 or 5 years and get the best education u can.

Go to each schools athletic web site and fill in the "Recruiting Questionnaire" or the Recruiting Form you will find on most every D1, 2 and 3's website. This will get you on at minimum a mailing list and allow the schools to start sending you basic info.

You are allowed to call and email coaches BUT they are very limited until the summer of your Senior year to contact you UNLESS you are at their camp or at a tournament site. In fact plan on getting the nice email telling you they cannot contact you per NCAA rules and not to think they are rude.

But you can still call them and if you get the coach or assistant on the phone (they cannot call you back so do not leave a message asking them to) you can in brief tell them your situation and how they want you to follow up with them.

Go to their camps - if they do not have one find out where the coach does work as many help out with the Nike camps for example - this will allow the coach to see you and spend time with you.

Biggest thing you can do is WIN on the court, Get a ranking, SELL yourself, start getting a cover letter and resume listing all your academic and athletic accomplishments organized.

A word of advice - DO NOT limit yourself to D1 - I got recruited and played D1 at a top ten school and looking back (20+ yrs ago) I really think I would have been much more happy at a top D2 or D3 school - I loved where I went and I had a great time but if I was to get a do over I would have looked harder and varied my scope, just a word from experience -

I have had both my son and daughter (she just commited last week) go on at D1 sports get recruited and play - Son went to a HUGE state school and my daughter a smaller D1 program at a private school, look at the schools FIRST that is the most important thing.

Unless you are a top 20 ranked nat'l player with the like of USC, Stanford, Texas...etc already sending you stuff you need to start looking.

good luck

ITF...Really? Could you explain what that is and how I get in there?

Others could probably answer more, but ITF is more International Tournaments, probably lower level ITF tournaments on par with the Regional Nationals. Examples include the Easter Bowl, Orange bowl, Banana Bowl down in Paraguay or Brazil. This would show how you would compare to International Players, might give a better picture than just results against American players, also shows some more commitment, albeight there is the added travel costs. I believe there is the Rubin ITF Circuit.

Ohhh. I already compete in those. Get pretty far. I don't think I need to worry too much then.

There's no set rule that a particular junior rank equals D1 tennis.

Haha. I asked for rating. Not rank.

even though ratings do not particularly gauge a junior you will more than likely need to be a 5.5 to 6.0 player for a Top 50 D1 School.

I'm pretty confident that I'll get in a D1 team then. I got a 5.5 rating, (from coach), still 3 more years to go. Hopefully by then I'll be 6.0. And since I already compete in ITF tournaments, I should be fine. Does anyone think otherwise?

Needless to say you're way ahead of the game. Best of luck to you over the next three years. enjoy the ride into College.

Sorry..when you mentioned you were nationally ranked and then mentioned rating, I made the mistake of assuming you meant rank once again.

Like someone else said, most D1 college players are considered to be 5.5/6.0.

if you play itf's and get far htne you should be talking to coaches already so something doesnt add up.

yea exactly. if this kid was getting far in itf's he would probably already know what it takes to get onto a good college team, and probably be in contact with the coaches

Well being that he is a Soph. coaches can not contact him right now. He actually has another 2 years, since coaches can not contact him until July of his Senior year. I would imagine if he is as good as he says he is coaches are already watching but can not say a word.

Haha. Sorry. I didn't mean to get at you. Just pointing out. But thanks for the info. Nice to know. Hopefully I can play with them.

How big is your 1st serve??

Only about a 100....But I can place it pretty much anymore.

I don't exactly get far. Only up to 4th round. But still, I think it's pretty good for sophmore. And as from what I know, they aren't allowed to talk to me until....Junior? Senior year?

Something just doesn't sound right here.
And if it is on the up and up...this is what I mean about young people not getting "outta the house".

Get yourself to a D1 NCAA Tourney! You'll know real quick how you stack up.

AT LEAST 5.5 for UT - Austin's team.

If you want to be in the top 6 so you can actually get playing time... probably more like at least 6.0
