True--I've seen a lot of dead rubbers basically 'tanked' and not worthy of attendance.

you're right just because I don't have time to take part in long debates about tennis but choose to quickly browse, post picks about what you said means I know nothing about tennis.

And right again when me saying "ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOFL, to the 33.33% that thought Serbia would go through. Come on now" was me criticizing those that gave thought about how Serbia should win, even though I hadn't actually read that whole thread yet. Yes Gorecki, you're right.:)
between posting here and doing things in real life I don't have time to get some books to learn about tennis just so I can come back here and prove to you that I am worthy of posting here because I know ALL about tennis. :(

Whatever your intention was that's over the top. It doesn't matter whether you know about tennis or not, Davis cup rules or whatever. One thing you should know, Davis Cup, like other events (World Cup, Euro), is more than tennis about national pride. We are not sportswriters, those who answer polls here are doing it based on emotions and desired outcomes. To rub a win in the face of the opponent in a national competition shows a complete lack of class, even if you have been previously provoked.

When the outcome has already been decided in a Davis Cup tie but they still play the last 1-2 matches. You can't change the overall result, so it's considered "dead."

Dead rubbers should be a chance for the participating countries to show case their new talent. Here in Australia, there were talks of placing Tomic in for a dead rubber singles.

Ya gonna also to have ride with Babbette, 380 brings up a big point. Tons of time you hear people say things like that or say way more offensive things. She said ROFL? You could simply pass it up and be like sore winner and move on. Its not she was like all people who voted serbia to win are ignorant twats and are ****ing idiots. She said ROFL...Also her not knowing the point of a dead rubber obviously means she has a good amount of knowledge about Davis Cup play..since a majority of people don't even know what a rubber is, the fact that she realizes it is pointless and is asking why are you playing it means she knows how a team wins the davis cup and knows that the dead rubber is not put into match play. She simply asked if hey does the team get something out of winning it.

My point is that national pride can be a very powerful mass emotion. You see here all the time the ******** juvenile infatuation of people with some players and how they get all bent out when their idols are criticized. Nationalism can be very irrational but its almost religious fervor can be understandable. Some people breed their country. I have an Argentinian friend who is prohibited from watching a Brazil-Argentina football game for medical reasons. Maybe you guys can't relate to sports nationalism in such a way (i don't know where your are from) but it can be very powerful.

I don't know much about Serbia. My intuition tells me that Spain on clay was favored to win by as much a 90% probability. Maybe the poll high percentage of Serbia supporters was due to Serbians. I don't know, maybe they don't care much about Davis Cup. All I know, is that when it comes national pride is better to be measured. At least that's what I do. I thought it was a tasteless post, but hey, it's just my opinion and my sensitivities here never hurt on anything of the sort.

What is wrong with you? Why don't you just answer her question instead of having a fit of superiority complex? And no matter what the use of the dead rubber is, its validity can still be discussed. The forum is also open to all tennis afficionados, casual or otherwise and they all deserve respect regardless of how much they know about the sport or which players they prefer, noone should ever fear getting bashed for whatever question they might have. Your reaction is frighteningly aggressive and hostile (and sexist ).
I for one agree with Babbette. The dead rubber usually feels like an anti-climax and receives poor attention from either the media or the live audience, it would be nicer to end on the match that gets a team the win.

On clay and in Spain with Nadal in the team, Serbia was going to the slaughter house. They knew it, you knew it and everyone else knew it. They had to try and put up a brave front of course but their chances in those particular circumstances were very predictably lower than low. You can't face the naked truth? Too bad.

I am pretty nationalistic, I am American and still root America a lot. Even though I don't like Roddick I still find myself rooting for him. I always rooted Sampras and Agassi even though Agassi is not to my taste, same goes for other sports. I rooted for America in the world cup and you know the amount of trash talking comes from those nationalist groups. They bash other nations to if the Serbians had beat the Spanish you know the amount of HAHA all those Spanish fans who were convinced Spain would cakewalk would have been around. Face it, it happens. The ammount of times I got laughed at for hoping the American team would win a couple games and make a world cup run. Same time I did not get bothered by it because we are all fans. Fans get cocky when their player is on top and take cheap stabs at those beneath them at fans. All fans do it, so really her comment might have been arrogant and slightly mean, but at the same time people on the other side would have done it to and if you believe otherwise then you obviously do not read the forums much. Fed fans all cocky when Fed is on top laughing at Nadal dreams of winning wimbledon, now it is flipped. Its a cycle.

Thanks for your reply. I lived like 10 years in the US and from my experience I think many Americans tend to be more balanced when it comes to their national teams. My guess is because the US leads in many areas, if you do badly on one sport, you always can have something to fall back, to feel proud and nationalistic. I'm Mexican and we are screwed in so many ways that football is what makes life bearable for so many people. You've probably seen some of those US-Mexico matches and emotions can run sky high. I don't if you saw Alexis Lalas talk about the last WC qualifier in sportscenter a few weeks ago, he's supposed to be doing a journalistic job and be somewhat biased for the US but make an effort to be balanced and yet he was all red faced saying: "...I hate those mexicans, I hope we beat them and I hope the freeze their balls out in the cold of Columbus Ohio...", I'm paraphrasing but it was something like that, this from a way talking from the desk of espn.

I've read many things here for years and I'm not surprised one bit about the trash talking, I'm very familiar with it. The way I saw it, I thought it was obvious Spain was favorite and it seemed like a pretty cheap dig against the Serbians. I just wanted to make the distinction between pulling for a player/team and a country. To me a deep nationalism can be easily compared to deep religious fervor. I'm a atheist and don't mind talking about religion, but I try to be much more measured than what I would say about anything else. I read a reference from someone (I don't remember) in the book "The God Delusion" from Richard Dawkins something to the effect of, "You should respect a man's religion no more than the notion that his wife is pretty and his children are smart". So, when it comes to religion and nationalism I choose to be more careful. Of course, I still offer my opinions if required.

As for the rest of "beliefs", like for example an adult (from a teenager could be expected) who is not related to a particular pro player, who happens to indulge in an immature and brainless infatuation for that person and who takes any criticism of such player personally. I could not care less if I happen to offend those pathetic sensibilities.

I think you're corelating natiolism and opinion on sports as one. She said ROOOOLF at 33.3% who thought Serbia had a chance. I don't think it had anything to do with countries, nationalism or pride or anything like that. I mean Nadal has never lost a 5 set match on clay in his life so thats as close to an automatic 2 on clay.

When the original Dream Team (or anyone that followed) playe, and you said (fill in the blank) was going to beat them I would have laughed in your face as well. It has nothing to do with nationlism etc., I just don't think they have a chance.

If we had a pole of who was going to the 2009 French Open Nadal or The Field and 33.3% said The Field and she made that same comment, would that be taken as a slight to all the other natoins that have players in the French Open??

I see much worse things said here, and for people to get on that little comment is carzy to me. At the end of the day it's just her opinion. Hell as Sampras fan I had something to say whe all those so called pundits said Agassi woud get the better of him at 1995 US Open, 1999 Wimbledon and 2002 US Open. I certainly would have liked to what they were thinking.... or what they were sniffing???

Yes I am the greatest jerk, you are very perceptive. Spain was definitely the better team, with Nadal, they are unbeatable, no country would even have the slightest chance against them. I was just in denial, but I facing the truth now, it's just hard but I'll get thru. I appreciate your concern.

I think nationalism is embedded in these kind of events: Davis Cup, World Cup, Euro Cup, Olympics. I'm not sure what her intention was but I have the same opinion regardless.

When the original Dream Team (or anyone that followed) playe, and you said (fill in the blank) was going to beat them I would have laughed in your face as well. It has nothing to do with nationlism etc., I just don't think they have a chance.

Maybe you haven't experienced or witnessed the kind of nationalism that I'm talking about. Having lived in the US I can see why. It can be very different in other countries. As an example, the US hosted the world cup in 94, a defender of Colombia scored on his own goal and they were eliminated in the first round. I think his last name was Escobar, anyway he was so hated that he was killed soon after getting back home. It can be crazy, and I can understand if you have not seen something like that.

If we had a pole of who was going to the 2009 French Open Nadal or The Field and 33.3% said The Field and she made that same comment, would that be taken as a slight to all the other natoins that have players in the French Open??

No, players don't play majors for their country. They play for themselves.

I see much worse things said here, and for people to get on that little comment is carzy to me. At the end of the day it's just her opinion. Like I said, Agassi and Sampras are playing for themselves in majors, not for the US. Yes it's just her opinion as it is mine. We just happen to disagree about what is worse than what. No big deal.

The players don't really push it like they normally would. It is played more as an exhibition than anything, but without the informal back-and-forth banter. As said, it is more for the attendees than anything. Ticket prices, at least here in the states, are pretty high.

Every so often, you will notice a final tie score of 3-1, as the countries decided to not play the last rubber. But now that ATP points are awarded, this is probably a thing of the past.
