Took a set 6-2 off a college player tonight...

I lost the 1st set 3-6. I was getting frustrated because I was in every point, but my conditioning just isn't there. After 6-7 shots I'd pull the trigger and missed a lot of "used to be" routine FH's and BH's. I tried serving big, thinking it would win me a lot of easy set-ups... wrong... earned me 10-15 double faults.

2nd set, I said to myself... if you get a look at the ball, hit the eyes out of it... so this was the plan. I started serving kick's to the FH and flat out wide... totally messed up his return game.

I freaking crushed the ball... hit a few slices down low on approach, Rafter would have been proud of... I hit THE cleanest volley I've ever hit, BH, coming in on an inside-out FH rip... I am PUMPED!!!

After the 2nd, he threw his raquet to the back fence and called it a tie... walked off court.

It feels good knowing the old fart still got game... yeah, c'mon...

Nice going. but why is it that old guys always feel extra satisfaction by beating up on the young guys.? I am no longer considered a young man anymore, but i always notice if some guys over 50 beats me, they celebrate just little bit harder than usual.......

Just think how good you'd be if you lost 50 of those pounds !

As soon as I finish the job I am on, 2-3 weeks, I am going to take-off for 2 months and lose 75 lb's. I will chronicle the journey in another thread. 4-6 hours of exercise per day and an extreme diet. I just threw $250 on supplements and protein. This will be EPIC!!!

35... tomorrow is my 36th birthday... why it's important to me... winning a set from a good player... I am 100lb's overweight...

You are not old at all. You have good 30 more years of smash mouth tennis left in you. :) I will bet you that you will feel even better when you beat a college player when you are 55.

Like I said... if I only have to step 3 feet in either direction, I'll do fine. Let me know, you can tell everyone here at TT how terrible I really am!

ummm, are you seriously trying to lose over a pound a day? I'm not an expert by any means but everything I've read says that the max thats healthy for a person to lose is 2 pounds a week.

i really think that depends on how overweight the person is.

i remember watching vh1 and one of their weight loss programs they told a guy to lose 10-15lbs per week. he asks if that was healthy and they asked him if gaining 5-10 lbs every year for ~20 years was healthy. this guy was a serious 200lbs + over weight. panel of judges are health / fitness experts even though their reply was snarky.

i'm old and i don't overly celebrate when out playing a younger guy. unless of course you call jumping on the opponent's chest and taking his girl away from him "overly". :)

So, the panel of experts gave a stupid non-sequitur as their answer. I am not impressed.'

Let's see how many ways we can play this game with the "experts:"

"Is it really healthy for me to lose 30 pounds a week?"

"Well, was it healthy to gain 5-10 pounds per year for 20 years?"

"Is it really healthy for me to lose 10 pounds a day?"

[cut and paste stupid non-sequitur here]

"Is it really healthy for me to lose all 200 pounds in one day?"

[cut and paste stupid non-sequitur here]

Sorry, but bad logic to me is like blood in the water to a shark.

What you're saying really isn't possible, without surgery, in which case... yes, it is healthy.

75 lb's in 2 months is my goal... if I can lose the weight, it will be in a healthy regimen.

I can't imagine why someone wouldn't know why older athletes feel great about beating younger, more agile athletes. It's because it is a bigger accomplishment for them to beat someone who should be running circles around them rather beating someone they play all the time. Am I missing something?

Just keep thinking of all the other buts you're going to kick as the pounds come off.
Seriously, there is nothing better you could do for youself.
Among other things, you could have counted on blowing out your knees and hips if you hadn't made this choice.
Only one work of advice: set your eating habits and work out habits now to enjoy many more years of tennis. Don't rely on some crazy diet that you won't be able to maintain.

I wouldn't celebrate at all...
First of all, next time you play him, he might double bagel you.
It's not nice to celebrate a victory like that....
I'd expect to play even with most Div11 and 111 singles players, just don't have the stamina and can't quite match his court coverage.
A solid 4.0 SHOULD expect to get 3 games each set from most college players, but maybe none against Div1 majors with full scholarships...then it's back to bagel and a courtesy game... :):)

Just make sure you're losing fat, not something else. Seriously. Honestly, there's a reason why the usual recommendation of 2lbs/week is a good one. It represents sensible changes to your diet that one can maintain. Just as important, it represents a level of exercise that can be maintained, reducing the effects of potential burnout and injury caused by over exertion.

Wasn't Krisan, was it?

Who is that? I don't think there is a Krisan on the South Alabama team. They are a pretty young team this year - 4 freshmen, 3 sophomores, and 1 senior--Marek, but they've played pretty well for the most part.

Who did you beat Slicerdicer?

Well, if we were playings sets, Tony would probably beat me pretty badly on sheer fitness. Tony seems to be a nice guy and wouldn't want to do that. He won't hit me off the court, if that is what you're insinuating. There aren't many folks I can't hit with... unless he just want to rip winners, then yes... it will be a disappointment for Tony.

Mr. Slice and Dicer already had a thread about his diet - and his plans to lose weight. You will see many, many responses about his unrealistic goals and scary plan; but he has argued that he knows what he is doing; so I again say, go for it Mr. Dicer and listen to your body and change your plan when needed; just don't get discouraged cause you do need to lose the weight.

Ill hit with about anyone, I always like to play and cant get enough. Theres plenty of 3.5-4.0 players at my club so that if I have nobody else to practice with or play sets against, these type of players are still fine, in my opinion at least, for getting enough balls back into play to get some practice if I hit right to them. I really like to play points though, so if movement is the case like for Slicer or if Im just alot better than someone, Ill handicap myself somehow; usually a baseline game where ill cover the whole court sometimes including alleys, against half the court. Slicer sounds like in his day he was a pretty decent player so it should be great.

I really just need to have a hit before the tournament. I dont want a complete day off, as well as I havent played outdoor tennis since September. Im looking forward to it as slower courts are a benefit to my game in a couple ways. As far as our hit, it will actually be more interesting to see what Slicer thinks about my game, since based on some videos he initially thought I wouldnt be able to win more than a small percentage of 4.5 league singles matches down there. Its a pretty high level tournament from what I can tell, most of how I do will depend on some tough factors such as luck of the draw and how I adjust to the courts outdoors. I think if Im playing at my best I will be in the match and have a chance to win against most of the qualifiers there. But I could lose a 3-setter the first morning and be done right away despite playing well, but I wanted to take a shot at this earlier than the summer. The tournament info is at http://www.itftennis.com/mens/tournaments/tournamentoverview.asp?tournament=1100018863 and the draw should be up Friday evening sometime

I'm probably a 4.5. I played 5.5 once upon a time, but I am overweight and can't run around the court a lot. Also, I haven't played ANY sets in a few years... so whats your point?

Just wondering since you were able to take a set off of a college player. Was this a current college player? Also what college division (e.g., Div. I, etc.)?

Just surprised that someone who hit 10-15 doubles faults in a set is at a high enough of a level to take a set off of a college player.

Really... thats great... what if I tell you I easily serve + 120 MPH? :)

In an earlier post You said that you were overweight. So it's safe to assume that you don't play competitive tennis very often.

College players aren't always that great, although it usually requires a considerable level of ability to make the team.

You said that you were about a 4.5 and that's probably the same level as a regular college player (depending on the school.)

Yeah, it's hard to believe that you won the second set 6-2. You would have had some serious disadvantages in the match, from what you've told us.

I rate myself a 4.5 based on my overweightness... my movement is not so good. I hit ball clean, my FH is good... if I set up and hit a good FH, it usually doesn't comeback, if it does, it's mostly neutral. So, my weight is a disadvantage, but my strokes are good enough... I probably "hit" like a 5.0-5.5.
