But they don't keep better time than my Timex. Sorry, but to me a watch is an appliance, not an adornment. But that's just me.

A Rolex is thought of as a sports watch. They make very nice watches but many believe that they are over priced (ie. you are paying for the marque). Their more expensive models (ie. Platinum or Gold Presidential Day Date) may run over $50K. You would likely impress the neighbors with a status symbol like this, yet true watch afficionados would find this to be of questionable taste as they find these "high end" Rolexes appropriate for mob bosses and Hip Hop stars. On the other hand, a stainless steel Rolex Submariner is a perfectly tasteful gentleman's everyday watch. This is a timeless piece, originally meant to function as a watch for SCUBA diving.

A Patek Phillipe is a dress watch. This is one of the if not the "bluest of blue blood" Swiss watch manufacturers. It is comparable to Vacheron Constantin. This is the type of watch that is an heirloom that is worn for special dress occasions.

Wear a stainless steel Rolex to the French Open or to your neighbor's lawn party. Wear the Patek Phillipe to your wedding, to formal events or the opera.

I like watches, I started collecting them from my dad, I have two that I use on an everyday basis, one Rolex, and one Omega, the others are far too dressy to wear every day.

The Sea Dweller, I didn't like the Submariner, though I know a lot of people have it, I didn't like the little date bubble that's there...I thought it was a bit tacky:

Since we're talking watches (Omega SeaMaster Pro and Breitling SuperOcean for me when dressy....Marathon TSAR on bracelet for beater):

Who can tell us what watch Safina gave her coach??? They mentioned the gift during her FO final yesterday but I couldn't ID it on his wrist during the quick shot or two. Anyone?

I believe that the best watch maker is Patek Phillippe.

http://www.patek.com/

You bring up a good point. Rolex is not even close to being the best watch out there. It is just heavily advertised. You can find Rolex in every mall, or watch store, while more exclusive, and therefore better watches are only found in specialty stores. There is an interesting article about this called "Face Value," which is in the New Yorker (May 25). For people who don't know a lot about watches, Rolex is the best. For others who know something, there are many better brands that I can name if anyone asks.

There are many great watchmakers. Patek is one of them. A. Lange and Sohn is another. The Rolex that Fed usually wears is a Stainless Steel Daytona. If you or I try to buy one, there usually is a year or two year long waiting list to buy. If you are willing to pay more than retail, of course, you can find one right away.

Lange makes some beautiful watches, but I'm partial to IWC Pilots and some of the simpler Panerai....more the "rugged" type watches of the fine movement spectrum.

Of course, a Portuguese is nothing to sneer on for formal occasions.

Not too big on the Breitlings.

Rolexes are just too ubiquitous IMO

The reason being, firm's mass produce their good. Resulting in the loss of quality.

I think the key issue with Rolex is that they outsource their movements, while many of the other brands manufacture their own. Rolex is really about marketing and positioning themselves as a luxe brand...ie celebrate with buying yourself a rolex, or a women's wedding ring has to be a diamond, etc....

I'll agree, though I'm a proud owner of a Rolex, they have become far too commercialized nowadays, it seems like everybody has one, which is why, when it came to my choosing a watch, I picked the Sea Dweller.

The watch that really catches my eye is Jaeger-LeCoultre, I love their designs and I love their movement....now if I could only come up with the 20 grand for the one I want...
:(

Or a Vacheron Constantin....damn...that's pushing 100 g's :(

Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Ulysse Nardin, Vacheron Constantin, et al are very special Houses of Horology, and their timepieces are functional works of art. However, most very serious watch collectors and cognoscenti agree that a Breguet, with as many complications in its movement as possible, is the ne plus ultra in the world of watchmaking and watch collecting - the finest there is.

Fed wore a white gold Yacht-Master II for the FO.
He used to wear the WG Daytona for many occasions, and a Milgauss for Olympic. he also wears other models such as DateJust or DayDates etc. on various other occasions.

where did you get this info from?

here are the complete list of rolex movements

rolex is def. one of the most well know luxury timepieces on the market at the moment. great design and quality. many people dont like the cyclos on the crystal, but it is one of their known trademarks.

I'm with you on the Panerais nyc. Got a logo (000) a few years back and shortly after that got an 88. Just fell in love with the design and the community that comes with their watches. They aren't necessarily held in the same esteem as some of the other watches mentioned (Patek, Breguet, Vacheron, etc.) but they have made some strides in the last couple of years as a manufacturer. Just a great watch all around.

I also like the IWCs a lot. Thought about trying to get a Portuguese in the past but never did. Just beautiful watches.

With all that being said, Rolexes are great timepieces, they are just promoted 100x more than other watches and overpriced to make up for that advertising. You can't argue with their success though.

I've had the Sea Dweller for about 1.5 years now. It's an amazing watch and like you, I did not like the date bubble of the Submariner. I also like the extra thickness of the Sea Dweller. It's just a little beefier watch than the Submariner.

Also, I have the peace of mind knowing that if I ever dive down to 12k feet, my watch will survive!

Rolex make their own movements. I'm not sure where you got the info that they don't. Until recently, Panerai was the one that bought their movements.

no, patek is king. but if you really want to go apesh*t, go jump on the list for an alain dufour.

breguet's more complicated pieces are nice, but being owned by swatch, i don't think they carry the same cache as, for example, a patek perpetual chrono. auction house results would agree with this position. but a vintage breguet is a wonderful thing. their multiple complications pieces are very . . . precious, sometimes overwrought imo. the 'flying b' tourbillon? a bit much.

lange and sohne's re-introduction has been phenomenally successful, they make really, really nice stuff.

audemars has been swept up fully into the giant watch fad; they still make some nice pieces (the royal oak chrono is a classic), but way, way too many 'signature pieces.' the jay-z signature watch? um . . . i'll take a pass. i'm sure it's been good for their bottom line, though, so, there you go.

I like the Milgaus. It looks good!

One thing about Rolex, it may not produce the most luxurious watches in the world, it is easily the most recognized luxurious watch brand... It has a distinct design that when you wear it to a ball, people will recognize it easily. Thats why people buy them.

Its abit like why you buy Nike, when you know the New Balance or Aiscs shoes are more comfortable.

rolexes are nice watches, they can't help their success. they take a beating, and are basically a commodity with regards to resale, you always know just what it's worth.

Guys...
if you collect watches because of the way they look...buy the swiss replicas..
Authorized Rolex dealers cannot tell the difference. On most models you are getting a genuine rolex on the outside...stainless steele etc., the guts are what is different, but it's still high quality swiss movement.
I bought a Submariner of a site like this in 2000 and it still looks like new and is 100% foolproof.
Paid 700.00 instead of 9,000.00 for the real one.
No difference at all...
you can google the sites....just make sure you do your due dilignece and you'll be fine.

It's a fine tough watch indeed. I find that a limited number of people have the watch, many choose the Submariner instead. I have actually gone diving with the watch, and it performs beyond expectations. Very nice watch.

unfortunately there are people like you out there encouraging the replica market.
the difference is yours is a fake.
i think you got ripped off by paying 700 for a fake.

If you bought a fake submariner for $700, you got ripped off. Those submariners with swiss movements were available in 2000 for around $180 to $220. Even now you can get replica Seadwellers(and submariners) with swiss movements for less than $400.

Wrong.
Huge difference between the 150.00 replicas and the 700.00 ones.
On the $700.00 watches, everything is spot on down to weight and 100% accurate markings.

The 150.00 are not as heavy duty, certainly don't weigh as much and in most cases are flawed from a markings standpoint.

If you are dumb enough to buy a $10,000.00 for a watch by all means go right ahead.
I will keep wearing my $700.00 replica that licensed dealers cannot distinguish and continue to stash the $9,300.00 in the bank :)

You are mistaken. There are Deep SeaDweller Reps that are available made from an original Rolex Seadweller 1:1 with the engraved ceramic bezel and blue glowing luminous material on the hands and markers and swiss movements that are available for a lot less than $700. If you paid $700 for a replica rolex in 2000, you got cheated. That's OK once, but now you know. I will pm you a website where you can learn about the latest in replica watches. And the reason that licensed dealers "cannot distinguish" your watch from a real rolex is many of them don't actually know about watches, they just sell them.

Oops, can't email you

well, contact me if you want to know.

Yeah, but it's still a fake. You're missing the point but somehow I don't think you'll ever understand just exactly what the point is.

Is it true that you can spot a fake Rolex because the genuine ones don't tick? Or is that an urban myth?

That's true but it also as a collector item and good investment..

Here is the best watch IMHO..
