Hi guys.

Are there enough of us out there who loved the R22 to form a society of our own?

I think it was a terrific racquet for its time and was wielded superbly by Martina Navratilova (among others).

Does anyone else share my love of the R22?

I don't know about the society but it's one of the best racquet Yonex made.. R22 seems shake alittle at the head after you play with it for a few years so I added alittle lead around the hoop to stabilize it.. it's great racquet.. !!

R22 is ps 85 level, top level high class racquet, see? highest performance avialable. r22 limits pop like the ps 85, or pc600. I still see them floating on the bay for pennies. Like bars of japanese gold floating freely in the ocean. 22 has flex, feel, no extra pop, and superb control and precise Japanese ninja like manufacturing. the R22 is Katana, after 300 years it will still slice humbly and accurately, only the true fluid grasshopper plasma child may know quiet secrets of humble Katana. It is like water, form less, shapeless. For agressive shots, it doesn't hit the ball out, it becomes the stroke. For flawless consistency and reliable professional performance, it becomes the perfect stroke, target and tactic.

I personally know that r22 is the one tennis racquet which was not made in a factory, but grew organically from the ground, in the blood laden, dark rich moist atomic soil of the land of the most ancient righteous and pure.
This is proprietary info, but I will share it on this blessed lunar celebration to mark this occasion of the 22 moon secret socie- uh I mean the r22 appreciation society, yes:
once there was a road owned by the Yoenyama family. Soemone attempted to cross it, he was said to be the blind swordsman. Yoneyama could not loose face and had to challenge the master for clearly the road was only big enough for one and niether samurai would back down. Using the way of the sparrow, the peach blossom, and the wind monkey argyle god itself, yoneyama cleverly distracted the blind master, besting him with a fatal nerve strike of his R7.

The R22 was a beauty for sure - did everything sooo smoothly.

But the RX32 - that was the frame that people should worship Yonex for. Everything the 22 did, the 32 did better.

Everything.

I almost fell off my chair laughing at this:)

Are you as good at performing as writing? You could tour the tennis clubs of the land (or maybe the world), giving lectures, doing comedy routines, showing off a few dozen "classics", giving "classic" demos!!!! The possibilities are endless, do you need a manager/agent?:):)

Thanks for the response guys.

Anyone have a view on the R27?

I found it to be a tough and unforgiving frame to use in comparison with the R22.

Any views?

It is been a while since I used R22 and R27, but I surely remember R27 is much stiffer and more powerful dan R22.

R27: Krickstein

R22: Navratilova, Yzaga,Gomez

befrore Yoneyama-san copywrighted the r7 and 22 Warren "the wizard of Boz" Bozworth created the Snauwaert Dyno. Both great racquets but the 84.5 sq. in. Dyno had a swingweight and stiffness that only pros could handle, wheras the 90 sq. in yonex r 22 was more than forgiving enough for club players as well as pros.

Had an R22 but somehow it never payed as well as the R7 which I bought in Hong Kong in 1982 (along with the legendary PK Silver Ace for my younger sister). The R7 was a beautiful racquet to play with -very flexible with a huge sweet spot. As for the Silver Ace, my sister still plays with it, and damn well I might add.

Sammy Giammalva jr. used the R-22 also, the R-22 was a terrific frame !!! nice power & a lush feeling melded together, played "bigger" than 90 sq.in. also I thought.

ps 85 is stiff but has flex and excellent feel, r22 has excellent feel yet cannot be categorized as stiff or flexible...I would use the r22 if it came out in 85, like buttah!!! r22 out perfroms anything tw currently sells by 200%...

Kinda agree with you plasma although we'll be accused of living in the past!

For it's time though I thought it was one of the very best racquets of the 1980s.

A true classic that you could play any style with.

Used the R22 20 yrs ago. Great racquet, seemed to get played out quickly. Both light and medium weights. Was so popular locally even stores like Wal-mart carried them. IMHO weak response in the upper-hoop compared to the latest Yonex racquets.

I did not know that Walmart is that old.

I see you had a r-18 behind the r-22. I played in college with a r-18 it was a great racquet. How does the r-22 compare to the r-18? I never got a chance to hit with one, my friend had one I pick it up it felt heavier.

I used the r22 for a while. Great hitting frame. I broke several though. Yonex was good about replacing them, but I finally got tired of sending them off. Went back to Pro Kennex at that time.

yes, that isometric headshape was amazing for hitting (and tourneys as yonex was sooo consistent specwise) but took abuse from strings and cracked a lot, when it came to the r 22 and r 23.

can't wait to try my Silver Ace out, recently got it strung....we all know plasma likes chunkers, but the anorexic supermodel stats and sleek sophisticated taiwanese curves caught my attention...

Today I was playing a match with my usual Volkl dnx 9. I had restrung it,and hated the new strings. I got into some weird head space about the strings and got very frustrated with the thing. So for the 3rd set, I reached into my bag to discover the r22 that i had recently purchased at a tag sale for $2 in excellent shape (even had a nice recent string job!). My level of play increased dramatically and I had an "r-22 moment". The thing was a thing of beauty, and despite not having ever used it, I was able to hit nearly every ball in and exactly where i wanted it! It was like a veil had been lifted and I could hit out. When I mishit, it was obvious what was my fault- there was no mystery about the racket, just pure tennis perfection. I may start a yonex demoing process- thinking that maybe the rdx 500 will have what I liked about the r-22 with a bit more flat serve ability and less of that weird upper hoop smashing feeling. I am now officially an r-22 lover and may stick with this one for a while.

Are you trying to say that you did not notice the condition of the racket at the tag sale? They must be desperate to get rid of it! That's a great bargain.

I "discovered" it because I had no idea I had put it in my bag. Just dumb luck ( the best kind). I guess the tag salers had no idea it was a great racquet, probably assumed it was just some old thing.

IME, 99.9% of the general population is clueless about tennis racquets.

Found an old RX22 in relatively good condition at a fleamart. Managed to get the seller to offload to me at SGD8.00 .... Glad to have found this post as it certainly shed more light on the background of this racket.

I'm starting a small collection of old graphite/wooden rackets and have about 6 now.

:)

Is it an R-22 or RX-22 (did they make one of these)?

I'm familiar with an RX-32 and RX-37...

I had one in HS. My 2nd racquet I think. I broked it by throwing it against the fence. Never threw a racquet again after that.

I don't remember how it plays though.

I always wished they made a slightly smaller r 22, the composition was perfect, different than the prostaff, but also perfect. Waay better than head. A kneissl type feel in a conventional frame. Maybe not that good. A donnay belgium feel in a true mid. Ok not that plush either, but it wasn't about feel. ALthough it felt slightly better than the ps 85, cleaner crisper, it wasn't about feel, r22 felt great but was about performance.
Like a girl who is career minded and good in the sack...the r22 had it all...truly dedicated

I used to play a Prince EXO3 RED 110, but I found a Yonex R22 in my step-mother's garage and I LOVE IT!! fortunatly she let me have it. I love it so much I just bought an other one online.

My question is that sooner or later I am going to have to get these restrung, and I have no Idea what tension I should get. I heard of one guy tensioning his at 50lbs. I like a little pop, but that sounds way too low.

I was hoping someone else from the R22 Appreciation Society would be able to advise me on this issue.

Thank you

Low tension may provide more power and gentleness to the arm.

Hey I started using the R22 recently and I absolutly love it. I found one in a garage and the other I bought used online. I have absolutly no complaints about this racquet except the fact that it is discontinued...

Today, while serving, the R22 that I bought online flew out of my hand and cracked. I can no longer use it.

R22s are becoming increasingly harder to find in good condition online, and in addition to that, I would appreciate having a racquet with no previous owners. I can't buy a new R22, so I was hoping everyone could recommend a few simularly awesome frames that are still in production that I could demo. I am mainly looking for the feel and playability.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate this.

Oh, and if it helps, I am a 4.0 Boys player who plays teams and high school tennis.

R22 really was a great racquet:)

It's interesting how many people that like it, but for different reasons!

Some think it's quite flexible, some quite stiff. The key thing though is that it was a really playable racquet, that was enjoyable to use. They really don't make them like this anymore!
