well i think its common knowledge nowadays that nadal usually runs out of gas during the fall season after working so hard during the clay & grass seasons. and he wasn't always the best hardcourt player out there, either.

Indoor HC is probably Nadal's worst surface(probably worse would be carpet but we don't have that anymore)plus factor in mental and physical burnout and there you go.

Wait, he's won Madrid before and a tournament in Beijing in the fall.

It's not much, I know... but, he's not a complete no-show.

Its hardcourts, and Nadal is nothing great on hardcourts.. Average at best on faster hardcourts.. It wreaks havoc on his knees, and neutralizes his game much more

And yet.. People around here are voting for Fed's HC competiton as tougher.. Laughable isnt it?

Laughable that you have no idea what average means.

The field is so strong that even someone who will probably go down as an all-time great struggles with the field.

Laughable? Hardly!

I agree. The hard court competition nowadays is so good that it even makes Nadal look average. :p

Hmm...Let me see,Nadal has made finals/has won at Indian Wells,Miami,Montreal/Toronto,Beijing,Madrid(when it was HC),Dubai,Paris Masters,Chennai,Rotterdam. Those are pretty important tournaments. Not to mention the fact that he has a Olympic medal on fast HC and was won his first HC slam,AO 09'.He has also progressed in his worst Slam, making his first semifinal in USOpen last year.

Those my friends are great HC results no matter how you spin it.And to think that they were realised by a guy who is a natural claycourter, not HC player, who doesn't really have any HC weapons(no big serve,no flat hitting game).
I think people are confusing having a HC game to having good HC results.
Nadal has just as good or better results than Djokovic/Murray/Del Potro and those guys have a better HC game than Rafa.Nadal is way above average on HC.He is way more vulnerable there but results-wise he is the first 5 at least,if not the top 3,if we count HC masters and Slams.

But to answer the OP's question,Rafa burns out in that period of year because in these past year he has focused on starting strong and peaking in the spring and beggining of summer,at RG and WB.With this all or nothing play style he can't pace himself enough to reach the last part of the year in good shape. And the fact that most of the tournaments he plays are HC doesn't help either.

1. Stupid scheduling.

2. Low bouncing and very fast hard courts are his worst surface.

3. His playing style tends to wear him down by that point in the year.

With 0 USO finals and only 1 Australian to show for himself. Yes Nadal can manage 3 set hardcourt matches.. 5 sets have proven to be a different story for Nadal.. Especially come USO time when he is all washed up by the end of the season and can barely walk
