Safina loses to Qualifier!?

can it get any worse? ousted in a 3rd set tiebreak to no.70 Kvitova? Is she still worthy of being no.1???!

It was sort of expected since she did soo poorly in the first and second round.

Better to lose vs a nobody than getting humiliated by a seeded player.

The loss was bad and Safina is not ready to be #1

BUT, she didn't lose to a qualifier. Kvitova was a direct entry into the main draw.

Now you really have to wonder who in the hell will be the finalist? Kuznetsova is the most possible candidate.
Oudin? She will probably panic and be nervous in the later stages.
Petrova? I highly doubt it since she's a huge head case.

My oh my, the upper draw is such a mess right now.

Like I said Serena is laughing her ass off if she doesn't face Clijsters. Easiest GS she'll ever earn.

I feel you bloodshed, its hard to see who will come out of that side of the draw....hell, why not Oudin? everyone else is such a headcase, why not her?

Maybe Oudin might make it since she's a fighter and that's missing badly in the WTA ( I think the only fighters right now are the Williams sisters and Sharapova). But I don't know, she had trouble closing her match with Sharapova that something tells me her nerves will be even worse when she faces Petrova. And if she wins that match (which she should) it will be even worse vs Kuznetsova and etc...

I don't know who will take it but if it's not Oudin or Kuznetsova as a finalist, that would be highly disappointing.

Why would her nerves be worse facing Petrova? Sharapova is a much more difficult opponent to play and beat.

She had it coming. I think she failed miserably on and off the court in this tournament. I just hope that she's not content with this lost just because the rankings says she's still No. 1; that was the impression she gave with her "people will remember the number ones, not the GS winners" comment. She may go on to not win a major in her career, but let's hope that at least her tennis and attitude will get better in the future.

I'm sad she lost. Oh well. She had been pretty unspectacular since ... in a while. Maybe this will help her finally get better.

At last the road is open for a new face to win the US Open...I wish that the Williams sisters will stumble also...Tennis needs somebody fresh in the podium of the tournament (Oudin,Schvedova as some examples)...
Even it would be interesting to see Kim Clijsters in the final match in her comeback...

safina's problem is she got to where she is by playing a mixture of pushing and power tennis but her coach would get very upset when he she her pushing, therefore, she would go for the power shots which often result in unforced errors. imo, you cannot push all the time and you cannot play powershots all the time, you have to combine them but safina doesn't do that anymore.
