Hey, everyone!

I was bored so I made a little chart to see how the rankings are going to look for the ATP after the USO.

The result of the USO didn't affect the standings for the two finalists - Fed is #1 and Del Potro is #5.

Here's the rankings after the USO
__________________________________________________________________
  1. (-) Federer – points after USO = 11240 (1400 left to defend in 2009)
  2. (^) Nadal - points after USO = 8840 (700 left to defend in 2009)
  3. (v) Murray - points after USO = 8390 (2350 left to defend in 2009)
  4. (-) Djokovic - points after the USO = 7480 (1840 left to defend in 2009)
  5. (^) Del Potro - points after the USO = 6825 (1170 left to defend in 2009)
  6. (v) Roddick - points after the USO = 5310 (1080 left to defend in 2009)
  7. (-) Tsgona – points after the USO = 3950 (1900 left to defend in 2009)
  8. (-) Davydenko – points after the USO = 3535 (1380 left to defend in 2009)
  9. (^) Verdasco – points after the USO = 3430 (500 left to defend in 2009)
  10. (v) Simon – points after the USO = 3350 (1800 left to defend in 2009)
________________________________________________________________

Nadal's back to #2

Del Potro is back to #5

In the Top 10, the guys who have the most points to gain are Verdasco and Nadal

The guys with the most points to defend are Murray (by far), Davydenko, Tsonga and Simon

Scenarios & Possibility:
  • Federer ending 2009 as world #1 - Since Federer lost the US Open final then there is a possibility that Nadal could catch up to Federer. The #1 spot for the end of the year is not a guarantee but it is very Likely
  • Nadal ending 2009 as world #1 - Nadal would have to make a good run at the Master's Cup and make atleast the semi's at the next 2 Master's tournaments (and maybe win or make the final of Bangkok/Beijing) - a tall order, considering he is not in top form, but it is Possible
  • Murray ending 2009 as world #2 - Murray needs to win 1 Master's tournament, win a 500 tournament, make the semi's at the Master's cup, and the quarterfinals of the other Master's tournament JUST to defend his points. So it depends on Nadal tanking the rest of the season or Murray having a miracle season. Not likely
  • Djokovic ending 2009 as world #3 - This really depends on Murray. If Murray really is injured and that causes a drop in his level or withdrawl in tournaments, then Djokovic can make it to #3. Otherwise, it doesn't seem likely that Djokovic will defend his Master's Cup title. Not likely
  • Del Potro ending 2009 as world #3 or 4 - Del Potro has many points to defend, but if he can do well at the Masters and make it past the Round Robin at the Master's Cup, it is possible that Del Potro reaches #4 or #3. Winning the USO makes it Very Possible that we will see Delpo in the Top 4 at year's end.
  • Verdasco ending 2009 in the top 8 - Verdasco has almost no points to defend for the rest of 2009, if Verdasco can knock Davydenko out of the Top 8 and take his spot at the Master's Cup, he will almost gaurantee a Top 8 spot. Very Likely

One of the announcers stated today that Delpo would be the new no. 2 if he beat Federer, tomorrow.

That would mean he gains more than 3000 points by winning the US Open

According to my numbers, Del Potro is #5 no matter what happens tommorow.

Simon is going to be out of the Top 10 in a hurry.

Del Potro is likely to overtake Djokovic (who I don't think will defend TMC). Heck, he could finish the year as #3.

Simon is going to be out of the Top 10 in a hurry.

And then, most likely, he won't defend his points from the Aussie Open and he'll be out of the Top 25!!!

Poor Gilles :(

Del Potro is likely to overtake Djokovic (who I don't think will defend TMC). Heck, he could finish the year as #3.

I think so, also - especially if he wins the US Open tommorow. Del Potro is knocking on the door. Now the question seems to be; who's going to give up their spot in the Top 4? Murray or Djokovic?

Logic dictates that it will be Djokovic, but who knows?

The good news is that the rest of 2009 will still be interesting because of the dynamics in the Top 10 - so little space for error from the top guns in the ATP!

Oh, regarding Federer. With his finals result looks like he'll end the year No 1 no doubt. Especially true if he wins tomorrow. He's got so many points to gain, it's not even funny.

Nadal is not going to outplay Federer in this part of the year enough to wrestle the #1 rank from him even if Federer loses tommorow. Federer will end the year #1 gauranteed as much as I am not excited about it. I doubt Nadal considering the surface and current form would even collect enough points to catch Federer even if Federer didnt play another match the rest of the year in fact, which of course isnt going to happen anyway.

Murray catching Nadal for #2 is not likely at all, which I am more happy about. I do think more possible than Nadal catching Federer though since lets face it Federer and Murray you expect to do better than Nadal on indoor type surfaces anyway, and clearly Rafa isnt even back at his best yet also. Still I think Nadal will hang on for #2 unless Murray has a killer fall and Nadal does pretty much nothing.

I dont see Djokovic catching Murray most likely but surprisingly it isnt impossible. He would have to outperform Murray by less than 500 points the rest of the way which isnt completely unrealistic. However Murray overall is probably more confident now, despite yet another slam flameout, and while Djokovic can be good on these indoor courts Murray really has shown well on them since he came into his own. Still Djokovic could definitely chase Murray for #3.

Del Potro can potentially chase Djokovic or maybe even Murray for the #4 or #3 but more likely Djokovic. Winning the final would help him a great deal in his pursuit.

Roddick could make a move back on Del Potro but I dont really see it. He wasnt really any better a player indoors than Del Potro even last year, so less likely so this year.

Verdasco is an embarassing headcase who his hard to root for but he will most likely pass Davydenko and/or Tsonga easily this fall. Davydenko is past his prime now and his results are likely to only be on par with headcase Verdasco this fall at best. Then again in the past Davydenko has been very tough indoors so who knows. Tsonga could do well this fall but he is so inconsistent he wouldnt be favored to defend a Masters title. Even if he does better than Verdasco not sure if it will be by 1000 points or so like he needs to stay ahead. Simon wont make the top 8, no way, probably wont even stay in the top 10. Not sure if there is anyone below that with a shot.

Soderling to make the WTF!!!(I like the new name for the tour finals...)

By the way thanks for posting, Blinkism....

Nadal is not going to ............................ below that with a shot.

Thanks for your opinion and input grafselesfan.

It really does seem there is space to move around in the Top 10, so that's going to keep the rest of the season interesting.

I agree with most of your points, especially about Verdasco.

How can Rafa's no. of points be correct? He was on 9.025 before the US open, and did the same as last year.

Point values for a slam semi decreased this year from the last. I know, weird.

Soderling to make the WTF!!!(I like the new name for the tour finals...)

By the way thanks for posting, Blinkism....

Soderling has his chances, but he has to keep up his level - picking up a 500 title in the fall would be helpful.

And no problem, norbac. I thought it would be interesting.

Good job thanx!!Too bad there's almost no chance DelPony will be no.2..this year at least.

IMO,before the WTF the topwill be like this:

Federer
Nadal
Murray
Djoker
DelPotro
Roddick
Verdasco
Davydenko
Tsonga
Soderling
Simon
Gonzalez.

bellow no.10 Simon there are after the USO :
11Soderling 3015
12 Gonzalez 2885
13 Monfils 2355
14 Nalbandian 2225
15Cilic 2195

so a lot of players with only few points difference.Of course Nalby is meant to go down like a rock.Hopefully Simon will regain some form.:/

lol more than half of Simon's post come from the rest of the year. Unless he has an amazing run like last year he is going to fall right off the charts.

he's in a terrible form,he has problems with his knees and always some kind of injury.:( :( :( so bad news.He may even fall from the top20.

Thanks for the breakdown. I see Federer staying #1 easily. Nadal staying #2 easily. Del Potro passing Djokovic and possibly Murray by years end. Roddick staying at #6. Verdasco making the Masters Cup. Not sure who will be the other guy in the Masters Cup.
