For the first time last USO I was actually watching WTA matches. I throughly enjoyed watching Clijsters beat Serena. But what if she was facing a man instead of a Sheman? What ranking could she beat? I say it would be somewhere around 500.

A player ranked 500 in the ATP will slaughter any WTA player. I'd say #1 WTA Safina will have a 'chance' against someone ranked outside the top 1000.

Forget rankings, Safina is clearly not the best women player in the World. It wouldnt make much difference probably but you might as well use Serena in this case.

Well, let's see...

World #621, Dusan Vemic, recently beat Gasquet in Qualies in New Haven, and is a top 70 player in doubles, so that takes anything above 600 out of play...

World #708, Bohdan Ulihrach, was as high as #22 in his playing days, and beat Sampras twice, including once on HC. So that puts the 700s in tough range.

World #922 Ross Hutchins recently played in DC for GBR (albeit not well - but probably better than any WTA player would have done)

World #989 Nenad Zimonjic is a top doubles player, so obviously he has skills...

It depends on matchup, of course, but it's hard for me to see any WTA player beating a man in the top 1000, unless the guy has a really bad day serving and off the ground.

It depends if we're talking about a best of 3 set match or best of 5.

Stamina-wise, the WTA player may eventually get really tired.

Any highly ranked high school player or above can beat a top ranked women. When the women were in cincinnati Safina hit with my coach and he beat her easily in straights. Another kid at my club, a decently ranked sophomore in high school, lost to Wozniacki 3 and 3

Don't know this is even a thread. Physically there are many thousands of men who are stronger than the strongest woman. Strength alone will help beat a woman.

This is why wta and ATP are separate.

To be top woman in the world is to beat every ( or almost every) woman which is incredible.

Facing a mans serve ( and height and muscle gives men a huge advantage) doesn't really say much about tennis talent. Also height makes it harder to hit flat and hard and still be consistent over the net.

Why are Venus and serena at top at older age (it's muscle and height)

Nine-times tennis grand slam winner Serena Williams is still proud of defeating Andy Roddick in a one-set practice match when she was 11.

"My greatest match ... was when I was younger and I beat Andy Roddick. He'll hate me for saying that," Williams joked after beating Gisela Dulko 6-3 7-5 in the second round of the Australian Open.

The 27-year-old Williams said the age difference, she is 11 months older than the men's seventh seed, was not a factor in her victory and the score was still in dispute.

"It doesn't matter. Age doesn't matter," she said smiling.

"There's an argument about the score. I think I beat him like 6-1. He says it was 6-4.

"He always says he's ready for a rematch but there's no need for a rematch."

Roddick, when questioned about the loss after his straight sets win over Tommy Robredo yesterday, saw the humour of the comments.

"She forgets to mention that it was 1993 ... we were 10, and I had to literally run around in the shower to get wet,'' Roddick told the press conference.

"I was [as skinny as a finger] and she was bench pressing dump trucks already at that time. I told her that yesterday, and she got a good laugh."

There should be an option for: "None." I do not believe in a serious match that the best ever WTA player in her prime could ever beat the lowest ranked person on the circuit. Obviously, if the pro plays a young junior who goes on to become ranked in the ATP but isn't currently ranked, or a former pro who is no longer ranked, then it would probably be different

If you are right, then there is no getting away from the fact that womens tennis is at an all-time low. Thankfully, mens tennis is still going strong.

Well, what are the problems?
Tactically, I'd say the top women can compete with the rank 100+ men. That's a bit sexist though, because tactics are heavily dependent on intelligence and emotional control.
If we base everything on muscular strength, which plays a huge role in spin, pace and running speed, then the women will need half-men anomalies like Serena to compete with the most poorly ranked men.
So if we can find someone who has the same explosive muscle fibers, which generate pace, spin and running speed, in the women's draw and put her against a potentially weaker ATP pro, then I'd conclude that women are lacking in the mental department as well.
Not sure what my point is, but I'll post anyways

But muscle means nothing. Gulbis, blake, roddick (younger days) hit very hard but aren't as muscly as the likes of andreev or nadal.

Women just aren't as good as men at the moment. PERIOD

in a sport that's so heavily concentrated on power, most women just have no chance vs men.

I'm not sure though whether players like hingis, henin would get bagelled vs someone ~500 in the atp.
I was watching a couple of hopman cup-games through all the years and sometimes it was not clearly the women that has been targeted.

some players can manage the power shots of serena/venus nowadays, why shouldn't they be able to do so vs a mediocre atp player? the gap between 1 and 1000 is HUGE (and 1000 is still good, but you do not often see that except live on lower tournaments).

I would NOT choose serena or any hard hitter in the field to compete vs any men.

I'd enjoy seeing this match, your chances would be pretty good. When and where can I set this match-up ?

Serena Williams will either get bageled or breadsticked by ATP pros ranked in the 1000s.

She can probably lose to ATP players ranked below 1000.

It would be interesting to see Steffi Graf in her prime go up against the lowest ranked man on the circuit.

Maybe Serena could beat a journeyman doubles player who is unranked in singles... or a 17 year old player who has a single ATP point and spends most of their time trying to qualify. But I doubt she would beat any full time pro, including futures players ranked around 1000.

Well I'm losing more faith in TT members. Last time I checked 65% of TT members have a clue. Now its down to 58%.

There was a video of a D1 male college player being thoroughly manhandled by Jelena Jankovic.

I would say a top WTA player would beat any ATP player beyond the top 30. I would not be surprised if they even beat Federer once in a while because their backhands are much more consistent than his.

LOL "thoroughly manhandled". I seriously hope you don't rely on evidence that was obviously biasedly spun.

It's not about men being "better". It's just about physical ability and women cannot help that they are not as physically strong as men. Saying WTA women aren't "good" when they are better than all of the other women in the entire world is pretty stupid.

I sincerely hope your not serious. First off the video is a hitting session where the D1 player was asked to help Jankovic. If he played all out and hit huge lefty serves that were unreturnable it wouldn't have been an effective practice so he held back.

Federer losing to a WTA player? Nope. Not gonna happen. Not ever.

Has Federer ever beaten someone 6-0 6-0 6-0 in a tournament? That's who the top women should be looking for, because no-one who can take even a few games off Fed is going to be troubled by anyone on the WTA.

I'm not sure what rank we're talking but it's well in excess of 1000.

No way.
I remember Graf saying 10 or 15 years ago that she might have a chance against the # 3000 ATP player.
