Would Roddick have won Wimbledon if he won the second set?

I mean, he would of hat a 2 sets to love lead and Federer would of had to win at least 3 sets on the trot. Roddick's awful backhand overhead miss in the tie break was the turning point in the match. In my eyes, Federer would of had to climb the highest of mountains to have won it had that situation occured. To high a mountain IMO.

My question to you is, would he have beaten Federer had he been 2 sets to love up?

Here's the textbook backhand overhead of Roddick,

Hard to say.

Federer nearly won against Nadal after he was 2 sets down last year, so I don't see why he couldn't have gone a step further against Roddick.

But Roddick would've definately been in a very solid winning position, OTOH that alone doesn't garantue a win (just look at his QF loss against Gasquet in 2007).

Federer has climbed steeper mountains in the past. The entire tennis world had practically written him off in 2008 and look what he did in 2009 -- simply amazing.

Roddick had a great tournament and kudos to him for making the commitment to fitness, hard work, etc... I just don't see him getting to another Slam final.

I would have liked to have seen Roddick and Blake with different coaches earlier in their careers.

I don't see Roddick making another final either. This was his last opportunity and he blew it. And to the poster above, i think there was a strong possibility of Roddick choking.

Well, seeing as Roddick nearly won at 2-1 sets down, i'm pretty sure he would have won in 4 if he took those set points. Remember Federer only broke roddick's serve once in the whole match, and that was right at the end.

Just have to wait and see if he gets to another slam final. He might be #2 seed at wimbledon so there is a chance, but obviously Federer and Nadal are favourite.

And someone mentioned the Roddick v Gasquet match.........Yep, can you honestly say that roddick played better tennis in 2007 than 2009 at wimbledon?

You don't need to break serve to get into a 5. set from 2 sets to 0 down ( see Wimbledon 08 ).

Roddick did play much better in 2009 but can you honestly say that Gasquet is anywhere near the tennis player that Federer is?

Roddick doesn't return well enough for these kind of scorelines.

But it doesn't matter anway, Roddick can lose against Federer in every match as long as he has not converted a matchpoint.

He returned well enough to break Federer (who some people say serves better than everyone) twice. Yeah yeah i know the H2H between the two players. And yes, roddick has converted 2 match points against Federer so you are wrong again.

How am I wrong?
I said that Roddick CAN lose every match, not that he's unable to beat Federer.

Oh i don't really care, Federer was the better man on the day and that's it. I was just pensive on this matter that's all.

What makes you think he could be second seed at Wimby? That's virtually impossible. He'd have to win the Aussi, Paris and tour finals to have a chance of that.

Last time i checked they did the organisers made the wimbledon seedings based on grass court results. That was why Roddick was 2nd seed at wimbledon 2005. Only 2 guys in the last 5 years (fed&rafa) have better grass court remues than Roddick. Nadal didn't play in this wimbledon, so he may be 3rd.

Well Roddick would have been in a good winning position but for a guy that has a rep for being mentally weak(atleast in this forum)Fed has quite a knack for coming back in matches these days so who knows.

TBH, the same can be said regarding Federer. Look at him vs Tsonga in Cincy, and Del Potro at the USO. Federer chokes more often than people presume. Federer isn't that mentally sound.

Anyone who says Federer is mentally weak is crazy. I would concede Nadal is tougher mentally, and of recent players Sampras, Muster, Chang, and maybe Becker possibly but that is pretty much it. I dont even consider even Hewitt, Agassi, or Courier mentally tougher, yet those players were all very tough mentally in their primes in their own right, yet still not more than Federer.

Federer did not choke vs Del Potro at the U.S Open. He was outplayed in the last 3 and a half sets and thus lost. He served poorly the whole match, his forehand wasnt on fire that day, so when Del Potro found his A+ game which he was playing the last 70% of the match it was little wonder he came back.

Tsonga vs Federer in Canada was a fluke.

Like I said if Federer isnt tough mentally than nobody in the last 20 years is other than possibly Nadal, Sampras, Muster, Chang, and Becker.

I concede that the USO final wasn't really a choke. Although when that issue with DP's Challenge arrose it did disturb him. With the Tsonga match, you claim it was a fluke yet there have been other matches where he was unable to close them out. Not as drastic as the Cincy match of course.

I agree,I consider Fed to be mentally pretty tough. There are guys that are tougher(like the players you mentioned-Sampras,Nadal,Muster,Chang,prime Courier,I'm not sure about Becker)but he's no slouch in that department either IMO,nobody can win so much and for so long on talent alone,it's just that because he's so dominant his every loss is put under microscope and overanalyzed.

The OP forgot to mention Roger was unabled to convert the set point in the 1st with a forehand error down the line. If Roger hit with a lesser pace, the ball would of stayed in and he would of won the set. It wasn't just Roddick alone that failed to capitalize throughout the match.

I don't know if Roddick is over. Mac still isn't over the loss to Lendl in 1984, that's 25 yrs ago.

Name these other matches. I gaurantee you I could name more for virtually every other player.

Knowing Roddick and how he has been against Fed and all the chokejobs hes pulled over the years. A few at wimbeldon.. Its definitely not certain that he could have managed to win the match over Fed with a 2 sets to love lead.

No.

He would have found some other way to lose the match.

Thats probably true, it seems every time Federer plays Roddick, Roddick finds a way to lose. What comes to mind is the 2006 Shanghai match where Roddick blew a few match points against Fed and ended up losing the match. Roddick did end up winning the 4th set so if he went up 2 sets to none, I think he had a good chance of winning the match.

He probably would have won. I still haven't gotten over the loss, and I may never will, so this has just brought it back into my mind.
