Signum Pro Hyperion and Tornado

I've just about gone through a reel of Signum Pro Tornado and am ready to reorder. I was thinking about buying a reel of Hyperion too, but was hoping for some feedback from someone who has used both. I've strung Tornado/Spiral Flex for over a dozen people and have had 100% positive feedback. Is Hyperion the same string as Tornado, just not reheated and twisted, or is it a different string. Signum Pro lists Hyperion's gauge and color as diamond black and 1.24mm. Tornado is listed as anthracite and 1.23mm. The difference in gauge could be from the twisting process. Anyway, has anyone played with both and can give an opinion?

did you really like sp blackline tornado? I used the 1.23mm tornado in my KPS88 and I didn't like it for some reason. What did you like about it? I am used to using MSV Focus Hex 1.10mm that may have had something to do with my dissatisfaction of this string.

I'm not much of a poly user, but I found Tornado to be very spinney and powerful. Also it doesn't have the dead feeling that most polys do. The main feedback I'm getting from customers is about spin. The only other poly I've liked is Signum Pro Poly Plasma, especially when crossed with natural gut.

sounds like a good hybrid. Next time you are in the mood to experiment try MSV Hex it is a very soft poly. Use it on the mains or a full job, its great.

I have tried both in several hybrid setups (including natural gut as crosses) Following are few observations and comparisons:

1) Comfort Level: Hyperion (slight edge over Tornado)
2) Power: Hyperion
3) Bite: Hyperion
4) Tension maintenance: even (DT levels are overall the same)
5) String movement: even (practically none)
6) Durability: Tornado

If you feel the Tornado string, the twisted edges do stand out and provide a feeling that they are going to bite the ball well but I believe Hyperion bites the ball better.

Hyperion to me is the next generation SPPP (with all the improvements).

I have been wanting to try this as I'm a regular user of SPPP Pure 1.18. What improvement of this or the regular orange version would you say the Hyperion offers ? Power ? Spin ? Touch ? Tenison maintenance ? Thanks.

Power and spin is superior with Hyperion. Touch to me is more of a technique than the string :)

I played with this string in a 95" 18x20 Ignite few nights ago. Although the tension was really low, I really enjoyed the bite of the string. Easy topspin was quite noticeable on kick serves and on slices.

I had my local shop order me a reel of the Hyperion 1.24mm... can't wait to string up the Ignite with it.

Just got hyperion 1.18 and 1.24 and tornado 1.17 and 1.23. Will post a comparison when I get a crack.

I liked the 1.29 Tornado. Good pocketing, decent power and touch for the type of string. Has pretty good spin but came away wishing I'd not dropped it 10% from my normal syngut tension.

It's strange how some people say they are the same (but different shape) and others say they are totally different...

The twist and ridges make all the difference. Both are excellent strings; I've been using both Hyperion and Tornado in various frames in the 1.17/1.18 and 1.23/1.24 and find it hard to chose which I like more. fwiw, I'd been using SPPP Pure 1.18 as my go-to string, but these two play softer, with more bite, and the same or better pop and tension maintenance. The Tornado shears the felt off the ball (really), while Hyperion gives a more familiar copoly tight bite. I agree with Moz, I have strung up Tornado 3 times in 2 frames at my usual SPPPP tension and next time, I may string 1 kg higher. Tornado seems to have incredible dwell time, the "twists" elongating and really cupping the ball before shaving the felt off it; spin is literally built-in to the string, while Hyperion excels at targeting with better feel than SPPPP -

Is Hyperion less prone to breaking at the edges of the frame (on mishits) than SPPP?

YES indeed Sir, the Signum Pro Hyperion is less prone to break at the edges.

Talked to the Signum Pro guys and they have addressed the problems of the old Signum Pro Poly Plasma, which had an unfortunate tendency to break at the deges of the frame.

The Signum Pro Hyperion is my steady goto CoPoly from now on in my BABOLAT VS NAT GUT hybrid.

Luxilon is OUT - SIGNUM PRO HYPERION IS IN.

TW USA better get this string as it really is one of the best CoPolys ever made. Good tension stability, nice spin, pretty soft for at CoPoly, nice durability and an awesome looking black color.

What tension are you guys stringing at???
This is so annoying, all this talk about one string, but no mention of what tension you guys are using....
*annoyed*

How much was the total?I know which one you're talking about.
Were duty taxed, since it's imported?how long did it take to get here? What state do you live?
I'm gonna order the Tornado but i'm looking for info about the duty customs in US.

I paid no duty taxes. The sellers website can price the string and shipping in US dollars less VAT. The only difference would be in the slight differences in exchange rate used by your credit card company.

I buy from both TW USA AND TW EUROPE, and I'm frim Europe.

Why is it so difficult for Americans to do the same ?

Buy the Hyperion and Tornado from TW EUROPE - that's where I bought it from. If TW USA had it I would of bought some there too by now. It's my favorite two copolys.

i did a check on a few US-based online tennis shop...oh man! all in a single gauge, 17g...

getting it from europe cost a lot more.. sigh..

I string my Tornado at 56/53

I'm curious about this. I know a lot of people will do a full bed of one kind of string but do different tensions for mains/crosses. Can you help me understand the reason behind that? Also what specifically do you feel is different stringing this way vs the whole bed even at say 54? TIA

This is like starting a religous discussion and ask why you believe in Allah, God etc.

Some believe that you should string the mains at higher tension because you get a larger sweetspot from this.

Others believe that you should string the crosses at a higher tension because it helps to avoid string movement.

And I haven't even started the discussions about REAL string tension and what's shown on the stringing machine and what tension you in reality get out of it.....sighhhhh

Some say the mains should be strung at higher tension because the main strings are longer and therefore will loose more tension over time, than the shorter cross strings will.

Other state that because you pull the cross strings down, over and through the main strings, the actual tension you get is quite a bit lower, than what the machine says it's using, so you should string the crosses at higher tension than the mains, and the mains will still in reality have a higher tension.

You see, now you got me started, and I could continue for a long time :D

Would you guys consider putting VS gut mains and either one of these in the crosses and if so, what tension would you consider to start off with? I have a Wilson KPS 88.

first impression after one doubles match and one singles match is I definately can feel that it is a softer string than lux, and I beleive there is a little more power. I haven't had the "wow, the ball is going exactly where I want it to" feeling I did the first couple of outings with the 18g Lux BB Ace, but that could be due to just regular variables in my game from day to day. Overall control still feels pretty good. I impressed myself with some inside out forehands today that easily dipped in. I think spin is on par with the BB Ace. Serving seemed to have a little more pop and great control (could also just be due to being dialed in the last couple of days)

So... so far, so good. Anyone play with the 18g Tornado?

Is this Tornado string worth the price? TW is selling it at $176/reel.

I hope this isn't violating TW policies on talking about competitors, but I believe I've seen reels available for under $100. For some reason this string is very expensive at all US distributors.

Yeahhhh - I do....almost.
I play with Tormado 1.17 gauge, and I love this string.
Much better in hybrids than the Luxilon for my game.
I love luxilon for the first 2-3 hours, then it just plays like a stiff old poly :-?

How do you find durability with the 1.17 vs the 1.23? What tension do you have it at? I had been using 18g BB Ace in my 18 x 20 frame and found it gave better bite then larger gauges, and after 2 or 3 weeks of heavy play was showing no signs of imminent breakage. But I wasn't sure if the Tornado would hold up as well in the thin gauge. What do you think? Do you notice much of a difference between the two gauges of Tornado?

Does anyone can compare to me PS Tornado and Genesis Spin-X. Its looks like very similar strings, except color and price. Within same gauge of course.

Yes. Tornado has sharper, more defined edges and better spin. Tornado also is more elastic and holds tension better. Genesis probably compares to Signum Twist, I think it's called.

After a couple of weeks of heavy hitting with the Tornado at 52# it got to a point of no control for me. Worse than when I've had Luxililon lose tension. But I definately liked the softer feel of the Tornado more while it was behaving. I still have a package of Tornado 1.23 and Luxilon BB Ace 18g so I'm going to try a hybid of the two. BB Ace in the mains at 52 and Tornado crosses @ 55. Maybe I'll find the magic.

Well, so far so good. This hybrid set up felt good, softer and more power than Lux BB Ace by itself, but more control than the Tornado by itself. The real question and test for me is how does it feel after a week or of playing. Previously, the Ace by itself still played well after a couple of weeks but felt boardy, the Tornado felt soft and comfy but didn't play with any control after a couple of weeks. Here's hoping that combined in hybrid they hold up nicely!

I knew I'd find you here! I bought a set of the Hyperion, which I'm planning to hybrid with VS. What tension do you suggest? With full gut I have been playing around 55, but with full Luxilon, when I used to use that, I would go as low as high 40s. Also - if I string and it sits for a week or so, is that okay or should I string a couple of days before I use it? Thx in advance.

Hey,

Normal best advice on a Natty Gut-Mono CoPoly hybrid setup is to always string the Nat gut @ 60 lbs and Mono @ 55-56 lbs, no matter if you place the Natty Gut in the mains or crosses in order to get the same constant SBS (StringBed Stiffness),

IN your case if you're used to string full nat gut @ 55 lbs and full Luxilon @ 48-49 lbs, I'm not so sure.....hmmm.....

The Hyperion to me feels softer than the Luxilon Alu BB Power, so you can easyli string that 2-3 lbs higher than Lux Alu BB POWER.....but if you used Luxilon Alu FLUORO, then maybe string the Hyperion 1-2 lbs higher.

If you liked the nat gut @ 55-56 lbs, then keep this tension level in your hybrid and do it like this:

NATTY GUT @ 55-56 lbs
Hyperion @ 52-53 lbs

But I personally prefer the setup like this:

NATTY GUT @ 62 lbs
Hyperion @ 58 lbs

This gives me a nice constant SBS, and nice control and still good power.

Forgot which racquet you're using - was it the PS GT ?

I always try NOT to use the racquet the same day I got it strung, but make sure to let it 'rest' for at least 24 hours, so the strings have had the initial tension loss before I play with them.
