The 2009 season is almost over, so it's time to look back.

What was the biggest choke of 2009? I'd like to get some ideas from you first, I'll make a poll later on.

Roddick in Wimby 2nd set tiebreak
Federer 5-1 up 3rd set Montreal vs Tsonga
Almagro and Chokebredo Paris Bercy vs Nadal

Roddick can be let off. Consider what wimbledon meant for Roddick and who he was up against. It would have been a horrible choke if he lost sets 3&4 6-1 6-1 but he didn't.

Roddick in the second set TB in the Wimbledon final. It was too sad.

It would be true if he had MPs but he didn't,players against Nadal had up to 5 MPs but still couldn't win.Bigger choke if you have MPs than SPs,no?

It was definately awful to watch, the volley at 6-5. Roddick must have been heartbroken, he might not get another chance at wimbledon again.

You cant compare choking at tuneups... to choking at the final of the most important slam. No way.. Roddick is still mentally destroyed from that. Bet he withdraws from WTF...

roddick in wimby, definitely
his hands were shaky, he droped the ball before one serve
i remember becker was commenting on the final and when he saw him he said oh my god
that has to be the biggest choke of the year

Federer serving for the second set (and a 2-0 set lead) at 5-4 30-0 against DelPo in the US Open final.

To have that lead, in that match against a guy that had never been to a slam final, that was the biggest choke of the year to me.

4-4 0-40 Nadal serving in the 3rd set AO final is a close second to me, and it was really what made the difference between prime Federer and this new, mentally fragile, proceed with caution Federer.

True, but it was a decisive moment IMO. Had Roddick won that second set, he would have been more likely to win the match considering the way he was playing and the psychological advantage he would have taken from a 2 set lead.

I don't know, Almagro up 40-0 serving for the match and finding some way to screw it up, that was pretty bad.

Still, it's just a MS.. and one of the least prestigious to boot.. It's not like it was at Rome or Miami... Wimbledon, that's every players dream to win....

Maybe but Fed recently came back from 0-2 down 2-3 times recently so it wouldn't have been a done deal(heck he almost came back from 0-2 against Nadal at Wimbledon last year) while with MPs if you convert-the match is simply over,no ifs an buts.

Seeing as Roddick won the 4th i would say that Roddick would win. But then again it's a completely different scenario so you could be right.

A choke is a choke,Roddick never had MPs,Almagro and Nalbandian had 10 amongst them.Heck Roddick never even served for the match.

How can the answer not be Fed in Canada. He sqandered 2 chances to serve for a match, 4 games in total where he could clinch the match.

With Roddick, Federer hit 1 great shot, 2 good serves and Roddick had 1 point choke, on a tough volley

Roddick's choke cost him a 2 set lead and a real chance to win Wimbledon and be immortalized as a Wimbledon champion

Almagro lost the chance to go to the 3rd round of Paris and Nalbandian lost a chance to go to the Quarterfinals of Indian Wells

Roddick wins based on importance of choke.

1 point is a choke? Espesially when 90 % of the tour would have screwed up that volley as well.

The only other choke was the slice when Roddick was serving at 6-2. He hit an agressive FH, Fed got it back softly, and Roddick sliced it right back to Fed. But even that could have just been misexecuted strategy

Almagro based purely on the quality and artistry of the choke, and not the importance of the choke. It was some of the finest choking I had ever seen.

Yeah that was a rather nasty loss. He could've just tried 6 times in a row to get a service winner/ace, and snag the win, but he couldn't (obviously getting the service winner against Nadal is easier said than done, but still.. I think he could have managed it).

that high back hand volley into the open court will haunt Roddick to the grave.

Roddick without a doubt.

Gonzo just choked 7 (was it more) matchpoints against Del Potro and then retired after losing a second set tiebreaker.

What about Fed against Nadal Aussie Open?

Did you forget about this one?Fed was playing better than anybody else, smoking everybody, and then?Comes Nadal and there goes another Slam away.

I still say Nalbandian. It was a mega choke.

Nalbandian always chokes. Even when he wins he always gets broken serving out for matches. Maybe he plays his worst tennis at the worst possible times - instead of glitching upstairs.

Nalbandian didn't choke. He didn't make any UEs. Nadal saved all 5 MPs fair and square.

How about Federer vs Berdych at the AO? The bird man was 2 sets up but then he suddenly went into high school mode. Let's not talk about how many set points, break points he didnt convert. It's the kind of sitters that he was missing that makes me cringe. Go youtube it or something and you'll know what i mean.

Once he missed that high backhand volley (awkward volley) I knew he was in trouble. He rides so high on his emotions and confidence, too big of a disappointment for Rod to handle!

Did anyone mention Berdych at the Australian Open against Federer? Up by 2 sets and then....massively choked.

ETA: Messarger mentioned it

I gotta go with Nalbandian. Watching that match... I mean, Nalbandian was destroying Nadal from every part of the court. He was completely bullying him and smacking him around the court. He had multiple match points on Nadal's serve at 5-3 in the second set, but Nadal played well and saved them all and held serve. I knew right then that Nalbandian wouldn't be able to serve it out, and sure enough, he packed it in. While serving for the match. How much bigger a choke can you get? He won one game after missing all those match points. Completely packed it in. Terrible effort from Nalbandian.

This was indeed an epic choke, he couldn't even put away 2.0 volleys at the end.

Easily Nalbandian vs. Nadal, IW. Having watched all the matches I can say that none of the 'chokers' were dominating their opponents as much as Nalbandian was dominating Nadal before his mental breakdown.
