There's nothing else like the semi-western grip for me. Spin friendly and can be flattened for an easy putaway

Full western on my fh, love the control of the spin! Really allows me to safely get a ton of clearance so my shots can be struck very hard yet be very consistant and i can easily take the pace off and pull a nice little angle.

Tell me, how you hit with full western? very out in front? racket face almost perpendicular at contacting? Hit up using biceps as main driving muscles?

Loving the fact that the Federer grip is dominating the poll.

I used to use semi-western, and to this day I still believe it is the best grip to use overall. It's so unbelievably easy to generate massive amounts of pace, spin, and penetration. You can put insane amounts of spin on the ball, and still drive it very flat.

Though spin has never been my problem, hitting flat is. Granted I use a racket and string setup that allow very easy access to heavy spin, but I learned to play the game by constantly trying to generate heavier amounts of spin and employed plenty of "wrist action" in my forehands (which could be the culprit to why I have difficulties flattening the ball out). Because of that, I can employ an mild semi-western forehand (AKA the Federer eastern forehand) and still generate extremely heavy spin with relative ease but with the added ease of hitting flat shots, which have made me a far more dangerous player.

semi western. I wanna go back to eastern so badly... :(

Then go back!

Federer now uses eastern. Its on Tennisplayer.net with hundreds of slow motion shots to prove. I use eastern its easier to change to backhand and it always felt natural.

I never arm the ball unless im forced to. I always rotate basically uncoiling into my shots using my legs, hips, core, shoulder, and arm muscles in every single shot. As for my contact point, i like to keep it out in front.

That's all the general stuffs that every grip does. I was hoping if you could tell me anything one does differently with the western grip.

I just moved away from s-w or maybe eastern/s-w. My swing path + the way my arm & palm pronate into the shot is just too open with that grip and cause the shot to go long a lot. I believe I'm using Nadal version of s-w grip at this point. The strongest part of the palm is fully behind the 6th bevel now (lefty), and I swing up in the frishbee throwing motion.

I can hit a SW fh and a full western, my stroke is pretty much the same with both. The only real change is that my wrist is turned out just a little bit more with the western. Honestly its not that hard to figure out, hold ur arm out straight and hold a full western grip and imagine a ball coming at u, turn out ur wrist until the face is parallel to the ball and there u have it! Not hard and the overall stroke mechanics should not change, theres no secret to how to hit this fh or this fh.
