Is Del Potro best hard court player of year if he wins the Tennis Masters Cup

Since flying stated a thread regarding Federer I think this one would be appropriate as well as I think it has more merits than one for the 0 hard court slams in 2009 Federer. Even though Nadal is my favorite player and I am not even really a Del Potro fan I do think if Del Potro win the Masters Cup he would have to go down as the best hard court player of 2009. The U.S Open and Masters Cup would together trump Nadals Australian Open and Indian Wells titles, plus he has had the head to head edge vs Nadal on hard courts. Federer wouldnt have won anything bigger than Cincinnati on hard courts this year if he doesnt win here. Murray has owned Del Potro on hard courts head to head, but that doesnt matter with no title bigger than a Masters, and pathetic slam showings on the surface for 2009. Djokovic looks like he will probably be a close of so close but not quiet for most of the year on hard courts. I am very happy he atleast got a Masters in Paris though.

Yea, if he wins the TMC he is. I think it's a tie between him and Nadal though if he doesn't because both have one slam, but Rafa has the nod due to Indian Wells.

Federer I think was best overall, just no on hardcourt.

You can't argue with results.

Nadal is #1 on HCs for the year now because he has that Indian Wells title and Shanghai final to break the tie between him and Delpo, in terms of the 2 HC slams.

a WTF title is much superior to those results.

Del Potro would easily be #1 on HCs this year

And, incidentally, he'd be ranked #4, I believe, should he win

:)

Of course. That is a no brainer. I think he probably will win it too. I would like to see Federer win but his game has been off the entire week here. It is a miracle he withstood 2 and a half great matches vs 3 great opponents to even make the semis in the kind of mediocre form he has been in for his standards this week. I dont see a tired Djokovic, Davydenko, or Soderling stopping Del Potro either. I would be surprised if he doesnt end up the Champion here and cement himself King of Hard courts for 2009.

Potro isn't even gonna win the title, or I hope to God he isn't. I don't want tennis to die. Him winning another big title would be pathetic and really bad for tennis.

Nope, Nadal has actually done better in the slams (Win + SF) JMDP did a QTF and a win. Nadal owns masters series and dominated the opening hardcourt series.

Yes. In fact I think he can claim #1 now, since he won a slam as well and so far has outperformed Nadal at the 3rd biggest HC event of the year. Not to mention the h2h edge he has over Nadal this year. I'd say he's already #1.

No, Del Potro is #5, i'm sure. Guys like Djokovic and Nadal still have a better resume on hardcourt than JMDP. As of form right now JMDP is the best, but you have to be consistently good, and JMDP woke up just after wimbledon unfortunately.

I meant for this year on HC, not overall on HC, BTW.

This year I'd say JMDP is #1, Nadal is #2, Fed is #3, Murray is #4, and Djok is #5 on HC.

To me the YEC is a bigger event than the MS, and JMDP has outperformed Nadal here. That's my rationale for putting him above Rafa, though it could go either way.

Del Potro is probably going to end up winning the event anyway. Federer has been sluggish from the get go here, and I am almost amazed he is even in the semis with how well his opponents played and how not well he has played. I would favor Del Potro over anyone from the other group right now too.

If Del Potro wins the entire tournament that would indeed put him above Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray as best hard court player of 2009.

I wonder how many people predicted this at the beginning of the year?

I would have predicted before the year the best hard court player would have been Federer, Djokovic, or Murray. Not one of Nadal or Del Potro. Then imagine predicting before Madrid that Federer would end 2009 as the best clay court player of the year. Or Haas in the twilight of his career end the year as the 3rd best grass court player of the year, not even close to his best surface in the past. Crazy stuff sometimes.

Oh ok, my mistake, sorry.

I agree with your list except switch JMDP with Nadal. Nadal dominated everyones @ss on hard at the start of the season and actually made a good run at the USopen.

YEC is bigger than the 1000 series, but djokovic outperformed Nadal, and Murray did too. I think it would be even.

Nadal has done nothing really since the French. His run at the U.S Open was no different than Del Potro in Australia. Both were destroyed by the first top notch opponent they played, Nadal just happened to be a round later and Del Potro himself.

Aus Open : Nadal
FO : Federer
Wimbledon : Federer
USO : Del Potro

Everything else is a points gathering exercise towards a higher ranking.

Nadal won an extra game and didn't get bageled twice :)

And yes, Nadal won an extra match too, so it is different.

This is incorrect. He must win his next 2 matches. Even then the gap will be such it could change between Murray and DP before Australian depending on warm up events.

The gap now is : 645 points.
A semi win = 400 points.
Murray has 250 fall off from Doha and he plays Hopman cup.
DP's Auckland Points will fall of the day the seeds are made,so they will still count. So by 5 points DP will be no.4.

^^ not to mention the fact that Delpo is playing Doha, most likely, so he'll pick up even more points. Murray has no more points to pick up from now until the Australian Open (that would be included in the seeding tally, that is).

Delpo, with the WTF included, has 900 (wtf) + 250 (doha) = 1150 points to pick up and the gap is 645 points.

Murray won Doha - he beat Roddick 6-4 6-2. So he has 250 points to defend. Maybe Murray can actually win a slam next year.
