Who are you rooting for and who do you think is going to win? I like BJ, but Sanchez is a monster in the first round.

I'm picking BJ, he's just good at everything. But I'm interested in seeing what Diego brings cause he's never fought anybody like BJ before.

I'm choosing BJ.

MMA is a sport where anything can happen. Things happen so quickly. In tennis, you hit 4 aces in a row against Fed at Wimbledon in the first round, you can still get tripled bageled. So much time to come back. In MMA, one intentional or lucky strike, and you're history. So the inclination is to always say "you never know... I pick the underdog..."

But with that said, Penn is way better than Stevenson and Guida, two guys Sanchez beat by decision. Penn is a more technical and powerful striker, and way more dangerous on the ground. I'm still looking forward to it, though. Diego is a legitimate number 1 challenger.

I would fear BJ more than Diego in the first round. BJ finishes better if Diego is taking this fight hes wearing him down and getting to later rounds.

I voted Diego as i like him alot more but its a stretch to think hes gonna win.

Good, accurate post. I'm also going with Penn. Too many weapons. If it somehow goes into the 4th or 5th Sanchez's cardio may give him a slight advantage.
Also looking forward to Mir/Kongo.

^ Diego is game. He's going to make it interesting. And if it's not a competitive fight, it will mean BJ put on a stellar performance, so seems like win win. I don't expect anything like the Houston Kimbo debacle.

Lots of fights I wouldn't mind seeing in the lightweight division if only because there are a lot of really active, ambitious fighters there. Nate Diaz, Frank Edgar, and Guida... wouldn't mind seeing any of them fight Penn because it would entertaining.

Benn is just so good at that weight. And I think his cardio is better than it has been. If Penn can go that long with GSP I dont diego will will gas him out more than that. But Penn does seem to tire later in fights and Diegos best chance is to grind out the early rounds and really try to pressure in 4th and 5th. But if he tries to pressure too much he may get careless and get caught. Its a wonderful fight on so many levels.

35 if you ace somebody 4 times in a row right out of the gate dont you win the game? thus eliminating the bagel? I understand what you meant just busting chops :)

I don't like both of them, but I know for sure Diego will be in great shape for the fight. BJ shows up every other fight out of shape. That's why I pick Diego based of his fitness to push the pace of the fight.

Florian predicted the Kongo upset stating how Kongo looked decent stuffing takedown againt Cain and expects Kongo to catch mir.

The he said

"BJ is better at everything Diego does" So I guess he likes Penn. KenFlo has also fought both of those guys so I guess Ill take his word.

He fought Diego in 05 so you can throw that out. The Diego of 05 and Diego now is 2 different people. He has improved everything by a big gap. Im not saying he is better than BJ but the guy that knocked out Florian in 2:49 is much better now.

Thats what I love about the guy. He is not all there. That preview show where he was doing cartweels and screaming yes I couldnt stop laughing. Who the hell does that. I just think hes mind is good for what he does. You have to be a little screwed in the head to want to go in there and fight in a cage.

here is the cartwheels. so strange.

Plus its not like BJ is perfectly normal either. I can remember him licking the blood off his gloves when he beat Sherk. Not what I would call normal behavior.

In the press conference, Penn looked fired up and annoyed at Diego. Diego was being very deferential to Penn, then BJ came to the mic and said that Diego was talking s$%t in the countdown to UFC show about how Penn would run away and wouldn't dare face him in the center of the ring. I think he said "ring."

Oh Just watch it yourself.

Penn looks like he's ready to kill somebody. You know, this fight not be close at all. Diego was taking some shots from Guida. Being that aggressive against Penn could be suicidal. If he takes a third of those kinds of shots in the first round against Penn he's going to get knocked out.

That was just complete domination. That fight really could have ended in the first minute. Props to Diego for having the heart of a lion. That dude probably looks like he got into a head on collision today. That cut was nasty.

Penn state of mind, baby!

Although I did not vote on this poll, I was pulling for Penn seeing as how he's from Hawai'i and all. Gotta support the homeboy.

Diego looked butt-ugly after the fight, it was like a dirty, bloody Sanchez. However, had to give him props for staying in that long and try to keep fighting although he was completely outclassed and anything he tried wasn't working out the way it was supposed to.

And that headkick from BJ was absolutely unexpected, yet it was the catalyst to stopping that fight in the fifth. The only time I've ever seen his leg that high was somebody attempting a single on him, so he must've been really looking to finish the fight in a big way.

Big risk, big reward.

Yup, I was right. I saw no possible way Diego could get to BJ.

Penn has the advantage anywhere the fight could've gone. Better stand-up, the best takedown defense, granite chin, great jits, sick flexibility. Won 40 bucks with some of my buddies, it was like taking candy from a baby.

Yeah, gotta give props to Sanchez for making it interesting. Most guys after a few rounds of being dominated like that would have played it safe, back pedaled, clinched, etc, anything to stop the punishment. Sanchez just kept coming more or less, from what I remember, like a crazed dog and his face suffered for it. He lost to a true all time great of martial arts in BJ Penn. No shame in that. Diego has the heart of a dragon. I like him more after this loss than I did after any of his wins. I hope BJ stops clowning him in interviews. Dude deserves some respect now.

I think gave him Diego his props. He seemed very cirdial after the fight when he went to shake Diego's hand. Sounds like he gave him some words of encouragement.

I think we can stop questioning BJs cardio after that fight. He was fresh, although it wasnt exactly fought at a frantic pace.

Dana after the fight said BJs probably 1 fight away fromclearing the division.

I know Florian wants another shot, talking about his new striking system, but Guida isn't exactly known for his head movement and elusiveness. Florian got dominated by Penn and don't see any reason to think he's improved THAT much in a few months.

Frank Edgar? Who's left? And I almost don't want to see him move up welterweight again unless he gets to fight GSP right off the bat. Dana said he would make him fight some of the other top contenders first, and would hate to see him losing to Fitch, Koscheck, or Alves.

Florian should probably not think about fighting Penn it aint gonna happen. BJ needs some competition and it looks like there is non to be had at 155. Hes really gonna have no choice from a big money fight standpoint but to move up and fight at 170. But the way BJ vs GSP 2 went he has to fight another guy.

GSP also needs some competition and it looks like there is none for him at 170 :) so BJ only probably has to beat a Kos type to get shot

Thats the problem with the UFC right now. Outside of 205 I dont see the champs losing to the rest of the field. BJ, GSP, Silva, and Lesnar are just so much better than the rest of the field. You are forced to bump them up to get competitive fights.

Lesnar? Can't agree with that.. I think Nog would take him, along with Carwin and the new Mir to also have a chance.

Nog in the past yes now I dont think so. I love the guy but I dont see him taking abuse like he used to in pride. Carwin is a maybe. I dont see him over powering Brock at all. And the new Mir is gonna be the same as the old Mir. Looks great against lesser opponents and gets smashed by Brock.

Mir can gain as much muscle as he wants but if Brock is the same after this illness Mir will never have to explosiveness to equal. Theres more to being strong. Brock throws the switch and is instantly at 100% power. Mir doesnt have those genes. Remeber him kicking soccer balls in TUF he lookedway too awkward doing that :)

Fight metric of Penn vs Sanchez not sure if thats accurate or not.

FightMetric believes Penn landed 150 strikes to Sanchez's eight, and stuffed all 27 of his takedown attempts. This is the kind of record that's talked about long after the hype of a fight weekend has died down.
