Yogi Tennis ???

Ok we have a guy in our group that can hit with topspin , flat , He can serve with great form but he chooses to slice drop shot serve or under hand slice deep into the back court or on return of serve he underhand slices right by the pole cross court just over the net. He hits like that 80 percent of the time he is playing then 20 percent he hits with good form for a winner.. I put up a video of him hitting with a player who is only a 3.5 player but just watch how he hits .

It looks like he can't do anything but when he wants to he can hit hard from anywhere.. I think he does it on purpose to **** people off , he claims its his game and he wont change..

Do any of you have people in your group that hit like this ??

Would you find it annoying ? We have told him but he refuses to stop slicing like that every point... We even go so far as to jump to another court when he shows up. But he will just hit by himself until some jumps in and hits with him...

well its his choice how he wants to hit.. its not up to anyone to tell him how he should hit.. but i think playing someone like that would be useful since you dont usually get presented with so many slice shots, a good way to learn how to deal with those types of shots

funny name :)

verrry nice courts :)

run on sentences :(

just learn to accept him, and make it a goal for everybody to beat him... when people start beating him 1) they won't feel that annoyed anymore and/or 2) he will have to change his style in order to keep up....

I beat him all the the time but my group has difficulties. I guess thats why I made a video for him .. He was happy i had all his family watch it from india lol.. The only problem I have with him is when he plays our older female players he drop slices his serve barely over the net on purpose and those older ladies can'r get to it and they almost fall down and he is smiling when he turns around like he enjoys it a little to much..

Hahaha Iv met people who do that, they are real fun cause they never get mad, they really are there to have fun! Thats great imo. Its usually some of the older guys at the club (40+) that hit like that, I hit with one of em and its actually great for tuning your footwork! I can really crush the ball against them though, but if your lazy you will make mistakes cause of the not so traditional bounce. Very fun for me though cause I dont have to worry about making em feel bad cause they never do!

In warmup practice i wouldn't accept that inconsistent accuracy from my hitting partner.

In a proper match, he can choose to play any style.

Fairly certain that Yogi has retired from tennis.
He's currently engaged in a couple of other sports:

Drop serves against old ladies..thats harsh...

It looks to me like he goes for low percentage shots quite a bit..and gets 1 or 2 out of in out of 10. He hits slices because he feels safer with the consistency he has with it?

Not sure, just assuming because he missed a lot of regular shots he hit. I wouldn't really find it annoying unless he can hit real shots and doesn't because he thinks you aren't..good enough..but right now it just looks like he can hit the low percentage shots a couple times, but misses a lot.

Looks like "Yogi" the bear is fat and slow, and very lazy.
So he's maybe a good 3.0.
Just beat him all the time. Little old ladies are not 3.0 mens, and would be susceptible to drops and angles.
If he doesn't want to expend energy for tennis, he'll forever be fat and lazy.
Let him.
The shyster tricky dick shots work only up to 3.5's, and after that, it's lights out for him, as he'll lose almost every point he tries that flim flam stuff.

Not only would I not want to warm up with people who play like that (because they can't seem to sustain a rally of more than 3 strokes) but I would not want to play a competitive set with them either. Majority of the points would probably be 1-2 shots, and then end in some ******** slice shot that goes 4 feet wide.

I like a work out when I play, and for it to be very competitive.

hahaha thats exactly how you should feel against the yogi master :) . This guy is actually 24 years old lol.. The foot work is a good point , hell its also a great work out lol..

in the video it doesnt do him justice but he can hit faced past top spin shots from the baseline any time he wants thats what pisses my group off that he chooses to underhand slice high looping deep or shallow shots . But he is about 80 % accurate with those shots. I will make a video of him in match play to show you .. I laugh so hard when we play I can't even play sometimes but I have fun laughing that hard its good for your soul..

Sounds like he is smarter than the average bear, and trying to enjoy being able to get on the court even though he is so out of shape that this is the only style he can play.

Just one question (and I think I already know the answer): Can you trust him with a pic-in-ic basket?

I am curious is he masking his footwork too.

you know I think he knows the foot work and uses it well when he hits the faced pace top spin base liners. I think everyone is right that he is just not in shape enough to play like that all the time.

There's no reason for not being able to pummel anyone with a slice like that. Sure it's got decent side spin on it, but it's got no depth and a decent player should get used to the spin after 10 or 15 minutes of seeing it repeatedly.

By the way, I'm guessing the person in green, closest to the camera is playing "Yogi Tennis," but I really don't know since the other guy also hits some weird-looking slices.

i havent read the posts so my bad if im repeating whats been said. the guys a pusher and out of shape. drop shot him ,move him side to side. dont "lose to him" by making unforced errors a neutral xcourt ball when in trouble wont hurt you because hes not going for winners.

It's the east indian guy thats far side of the camera. But ,, lol ,,, The guy in the green only hits flat with a down wards swing like he is slapping at the ball. Believe it or not he has one 3.5 tourneys in los angeles county more than once. Without hitting a single top spin shot AND HE HASN'T STRUNG HIS RACQUET IN A YEAR AND A HALF !!!!! but only down fall for him is he has been playing 3.5 for 20 years never advanced... Man we have an interesting group. One cool thing is they all are good people and they love tennis as much as I do.

Your right , most of the group that hates playing with him are just not consistent enough to do that. But we have a coach that my captain of our league team brought and now he is working with all of them and he is very good.

Does that mean he is super fast like James Blake when he feels like actually running too?
I am guessing he can probly hold that speed for one set at Rafael Nadal or James Blake's retreiving speed correct? Another way to phrase it would be does he suddenly become a speed demon with excellent footwork where no matter how hard you hit and well placed the shot is he manages to track his opponents shot down with excellent anticpation. In other words god mode. This would be very interesting to watch given his body type.

That Yogi will be tough to beat if he has that hidden speed. Smart stamina managment will maximize the use of that at crutial points similar to Sampras's blood issue.

I haven't seen Yogi Bear run in a while. Yogi Bear might have been a fast runner when it steals picnic baskets. I'll need to watch the cartoon again to see how that male bear runs again.

OK, YOGI in purple has no confidence in his regular strokes, so chooses sidespin slice to control depth. He doesn't prep at all, and looks afraid to actually rally with fat guy in green. Some fat guys hit really good if they don't have to run, so maybe that's the strategy.
Yogi can hit normal shots, of course, but old man's slice is easier for him than actually trying to play good tennis.
Both guys prolly 3.5's.

It's not that he is physically fast its that he knows where the shots are gonna go. (anticipating the shot) and combination of the fact that most of his opponents are 3.5 players that are in their 30s 40s and even 50s 60s..

Easy to beat if you're 4.0 or better, of course.
Most slicer/dicers have great lobs, always with slice and deep near your baseline. You cannot put away overheads from the baseline consistently, so playing net doesn't always work.
And when you run all the way back to hit your overhead, unless it's really forcing, they can hit short angle sliced dropshots, over and over again, until you drop from exhaustion.
That's the slicer/dicer game! You approach, they lob deep. You overhead, they slice angle short. You approach, they lob deep. You overhead, ......

Does he go far into the tournament at the 4 and 4.5 level he enters playing that style?

Approximatly how deep?

lol the far guy is yogi (he is east indian and he loves to be called that) The guy in green has been a 3,5 player for 20 years . he never hits top spin allways s;laps down on the ball and he has won several 3.5 usta tourneys. and he hasn't changed his strins in 2 years of play
!!!!!!!!!!!! I play with some drastically different kinda players on tuesday and thursdays lol...

Kinda like "slap" tennis - crank up the speed a spec and the shots fall apart quickly as the injuries start to pile up.

You nailed it. I play a slicer/dicer who is a great player. He also hits with topspin and basically has about every stroke in the arsenal down. He likes to get you in these lob/dop shot combos that he can end at will because his net game is excellent.

It is really not easy to win points on this guy. My best bet is side to side groundstrokes that I follow to the net to finish off. I'm not sure what works for others.

yeah side to side works for me to . or I try and get aggressive on his first and second serve , Meaning I go for the corners so that right away he is moving.

And what both of you said about how they hit deep from their volley when he stands at the servise line or at the baseline . crazy stuff

I'm not complaining lol.. I am sharing with everyone the different styles of play . So please don't be to confused. :)

WELL who's who? the fat green guy is not yogi, the guy on the far side is?
but the guy in green is the one slicing and dicing... i'm confused still.

yep slap tennis lol... but he never gets injured and he has been playing like that for 20 years

OK. Nothing wrong with that approach to the game especially if he has played that way for so long. However, its a "glass ceiling" mentality because its hard to improve beyond a certain point. I have no interest whatsoever in putting that style down and feel one of the beautiful things about this game is that it can be played and enjoyed by all ages at all sorts of levels.

no i was just confused that you talk about the guy slicing and dicing but the guy in front of you isn the slicer and dicer and you do not notice he's the real yogi.

hahaha.. Their is only one yogi master. And thats the guy in the back lol.. He does under hand slices from the baseline to the opponents baseline or to the right or left pole just on the other side of the net . he can hit volleys while running forward that loop to the back of the baseline or just over the net he can hit all those shots off of service returns bye 4.5 players .. And he does this consistently even though he can rip a topspin shot down the line at will.. lol

Their can be only one yogi lol ... your funny ...lol

yeah. sometimes I will play yogi tennis to practice my pusher game. I have a wicked forehand slice/ drop shot now. They expect me to crush the ball and instead I am playing with a "slap chop"

Hey I think you need to put a little (tm) next to the "slap chop" word when you post it. :)

I believe according to TT rules it is now my intellectual property on these boards. right?

Yeah and I should clarify that the guy I play with crushes people all the time. I mean ex college players..etc. He is very fast, an incredible volleyer, and you have to hit perfect drop shots or he will not only get to them, but finish the point if you dont run up to him and try to counter.

I side to side him then finish at the net. It's great practice.
