What happened to the ATP Masters Series Shields?

Guys used to hold up the ATP Masters Shield whenever they won a MS title.

However lately guys have been just holding up regular trophies.

Has the ATP gotten rid of the shield since the changeover last year? Sorry if this is an obvious question, I liked the shield and thought it was a nice touch, some of the trophies are just so plain; at least the shield signified something.

they removed madrid harcourts right, well i didnt like that,

The Madrid indoor masters event was removed in favour of Shanghai in order to move a clay-court Madrid tournament into Hamburg's old slot. One thing I did like about the 2009 changes was the YEC at the O2 Arena in London.

Getting rid of the Masters Series shields was a very dumb move. Downgrading Hamburg in favour of Madrid was even worse. And don't even get me started on the "ATP TOUR" plastered across the nets.

I agree, they could have changed to "Masters 1000" but still kept the shield. It really did add significance to a MS victory when you see a guy like Nalbandian who'd done so much and yet to win a MS before Madrid 07. Really was a special moment. Now it's just a regular old trophy, takes some of the significance away in my eyes at least.

Masters Series tournaments used to be so hard to win in the old days. You had to play 6 matches (no byes in the first round for the top seeds) in one week (not like now) and the final was played to the best of five sets.

I really wish the old idea of the Masters Series was brought back. De Villiers ruined the ATP.

JamesBlakeFan#1: Indian Wells and Nasdaq 100 open (at that time) never handed out the water-crystal shields to the champions. Indian Wells always handed out a 'dolphin' like ornimant and Miami always handed out a glass cup.

In the past I think that:
- Indian Wells and Miami had regular trophies and no shields as Anaconda said, as well as Canada and Paris
- Monte-Carlo and Rome had both regular trophies and shields which was pretty cool
- Hamburg, Cincinnati and Madrid when it was indoors had shields but no regular trophies

I miss the shields, plus the dolphin at Indian Wells and the tree at Paris (both those tournament have ugly trophies now).
All the masters events should have best of 5 set finals apart from Canada and Cincy.

Terrible idea.

I'm glad masters tournaments give out their own trophies now. Imagine if the slams all had one generic cheap trophy they gave out to the winner. Even Big 3 would be like it's not worth the blood, sweat and tears to hold up a antique shop item :-D

I'm presuming they stopped issuing the shields when the name changed from 'ATP Masters Series' to 'ATP Tour Masters 1000' in 2009.
