So pissed at old FART!

i regret not beating up this old fart at my area's courts today. i'm so pissed that i just had to come here to vent :). this old fart (looks like frankenstien monster but a lot UGLIER!). he was practicing his serves on his court. he had previously hit with his buddies and they've all just left. i noticed after he had practiced several rounds and that he had packed up all his balls, he went to where his stuff was, and looking like he was about to leave. i waited several minutes and he was still packing. then i came up to him and ask nicely, "excuse me, are you done with the court?". he turned around and angrily said "NO". as if i was intruding or something. another 5 minutes later (still packing or scratching his butt, i don't know.. just standing there). he finally got on his bike to leave and as he was passing me by i said to him "excuse me, you told me you weren't done". to that he responded "oh yeah, i'm done"

WHAT A JACKASS!!!!
ok, i feel better now.. kinda

He's probably going to die soon, so have some compassion. It's all part of the public courts scene anyway.

He is a pathetic loser. I'm surprised he has friends to play with. We're supposed to respect the elders - sometimes they make it real difficult.

There's an older gentleman where I play (4 courts away) who hits the ball about 10mph - but he grunts loudly like the pros on TV - guess he thinks it's going to help his sad game - asked him once nicely to try to keep it down - he didn't even respond, just kept it up; very annoying at 7AM - you get up early and just want to get some sets/practice in in peace...

I rallied with some old guy awhile ago. He hit super flat and I think he was trying to break my ankles making me run or something.

Then he tries to get personal with me and tells me this random story about people getting their name changed in America.

i don't mind rallying with old guys who goes for corners right off the bat. i actually try to make it look like i'm breathing heavy and i often praise them with their accuracy. but no more. i'm going for the throat now. :) it's on!

Creeper!

Reminds me of rallying with an overweight oldster in Hong Kong. He treated it like a battle royale - he couldn't hit hard but started hitting for the corners. I wanted some exercise so for a while I chased everything down and hit right back up the middle to him. After a while I just let them go. When we were done he was bragging to his buddies about kicking the young rich American guy's *ss - too funny!

he is one of those "regulars" i see playing with the other regulars. they all seem really nice and chatty with each other.

that pisses me off that he didn't respond. people are just so rude. just like when i open the doors for people they just pass by and not even say 'thanks' or even a simple nod. if they didn't appreciate it why do they always rush to the door when they see me opening it?

That does sounds pretty rude of him. He could have been at least polite about letting you know that it would take him a few more minutes. He probably got annoyed by the comment you made as he was leaving. He didn't respond well though. Yet, overall, "young people" can be just as rude as "older players" out on the Courts, present company excluded. Rudeness cuts across all ages.

Old ppl who managed to do something with their lives don’t rely on strangers to hold doors for them. The ones you speak of are LC (low class) and deserve nothing but compassion. Please don’t be mad at them so much.

i apologized if i came across sounding like i'm pissed at ALL old people. i meant just THIS old fart. and maybe a few others that i personally encountered who were rude.

yea. i agree i played next to a couple of young guys who were taking their game TOO seriously. they kept arguing with each other. one of the guy threw his racket three times. my partner apologized when our ball rolled over to their court (sloped courts), they would look all pissed. made my partner scared of serving to the corner. so he kept serving down the middle and end up losing to me :)

*smile* ... what courts do you normally play on ... I think I ran into that SOB the other day ... he nearly ran me over with his bike when I asked how his work-out went ... just look at it this way, things could be worse ... imagine how his wife feels waking up every a.m. and seeing his wart covered face (with an excess of druel running down the corner of his mouth) on the pillow next to her's ... and ... he sneeringly asks her if she's in the mood to "play" ... now isn't that a sight to beholden ... my apologizes for any nightmares you may have tonight!

lol. if i can sleep i will have nightmares. things like this really gets under my skin because i wish i had confronted him better. different scenarios keep entering my head causing me to toss and turn. like what would happen if i chased him down on his bike to try to get him to apologize or just some kind of explanation. i don't want to fight but what if he starts going crazy and swing a racket at me? i would never punch an old guy so i probably end up running away. that's no good. or if i did a roundhouse sweep before he can swing the racket at my face. he might fall on his head and die.. that's definitely not good. what if i tried to act tough and imagine im Dirty Hairy and try to say, "hey, get off your bike punk!". bah. whatever

im in the bay area but that's all im going to disclose. no need to zero in on this guy ;) looks like you have your own problems too with your guy. good luck with that. hope you teach him a good lesson! as for my guy, i think im going to try and handle this "appropriately". like challenge him to a match, get him to approach the net, then aim for his adam's apple.

Hey au ... I have a better suggestion ... why don't the two of us just let it go ... we both had an opportunity to vent ... worrying about people like that (... granted there are many of them) is just not worth our time or energy ... just go out and have fun on the court ... good hitting to you!

au

yeah, you are right. i let it get to me. now that i think about it even more. maybe he was just pissed if he had lost to his buddies earlier and then took it out on random ppl. so it's not personal

Oh boo hoo. That's life! Learning to walk is frustrating. Growing up is hard. So is leaving home for the first time. You should get wiser as you get older. Many older people are gracious and polite, the fact that this guy wasn't reflects on him, and I wouldn't make excuses for him. He owns his rude behavior, IMO.

Just like you own yours. That is a pretty funny response on your part, talking about people being gracious after leading with the boo hoo comment. I was simply trying to offer a different perspective on the situation, not making excuses for anyone. How do you justify your own rudeness?

On the other hand, what if he's single, got big house, ferrari in his garage, and a hot girlfriend? :)

Sometimes older guys have physical issues - they might not have heard you clearly or might not saw you clearly as you were waiting.

When in doubt, smile first. Friendly little chat with your question inserted right after will probably have different results.

Maybe your "old fart" was in fact working up to a significant passage of gas, possibly an important and anticipated part of his daily routine, and you interrupted his concentration.

^^^^^^^^
OP, jswinf's nailed it imho. This old fart was trying to unload some "new fart" gaseous ballast and you interrupted him.....'twas probably feeling as frustrated as if he were interrupted while he was about to sneeze.

On the other hand, since the cranky old sap was looking to rent the air with noxious nitrogenous emmissions---this while passing it through a pair of tone-less flabby old glutes that would have obnoxiously flapped and bellowed like a worn out douchebag heralding the "new fart's" presumably wet escape into the atmosphere---you actually did yourself and those in the immediate vacinity a favor. From here on however, the rules have changed. Yes, a dog is entitled to "one bite" per se, but from this point forward should that old coot act up again at YOUR expense, don't even bother to call him on it..........."BOOM!" ...... knock his ass out cold.

as for "getting older can be frustrating". i'm sure anyone can relate to that. "time waits for no one". even at a young age, some may wish they were even younger.

I re-read the posts in case it came across as being aggressive in some way I didn't intend. Not that I'm trying to insist that I don't make mistakes, but I don't see that I was being personal. I commented on the post, but not against you.

One point-of-view seems to be that we'll all get older so be sympathetic to transgressions by the elderly. Another viewpoint is that as we get older we still shouldn't get sloppy in how we deal with other people.

Excellent statement which gets right to the crux. I used to get pissed off at old folks' behavior, and now all of a sudden I find myself at a few years past 50, and now I'm acquainted with senior citizens who act eccentrically, and my parents are exhibiting signs of dementia and irrational behavior. It really is a ***** to grow old, and the scary thing is I'm not that far from it.

I like your advocacy of compassion. Some of the posters here would just want to beat the senior citizen's ass, which would be the easy thing to do.

My father has that going on. I would always be understanding with a person with dementia. But what about the lady at the supermarket who arrived at the checkout simultaneously with me? She had a full cart, I had only one item. I stood still to give her the chance to let me go ahead, but she charged ahead of me instead. She wasn't confused. This guy at the tennis courts doesn't sound confused either. Some old people are mean, and it's not ok, just because they're old.

I respect you, au, for trying to work out this issue of the "old fart's" rudeness. But there is a substantial difference between someone in his 30s who wishes he could move like he was in his 20s again versus a senior citizen who experiences incontinence and memory loss. It really is tough to be truly old. As for myself, I just hope that when I'm truly old, I'll be in a place where I won't be an embarrassment to my children.

All I can say in response is that there are obvious, external signs of dementia, such as confusion, and other symptoms where the person doesn't appear confused which can be interpreted as plain meanness or rudeness. It's still dementia though. My mother was the sweetest person up until the last few years when she started exhibiting a real meanness toward everyone. If you look at the literature on dementia and Alzheimers, you'll see that this is not unusual. So are we to conclude that all these people are just plain mean and evil? Yeah, it certainly isn't pleasant being around these folks, but then at that point it's time to walk away, and refer myself to your signature, Steady Eddy.

ok. are folks considered truly old if they are around 55years old? because this guy looks 55years old, had good movements, and hits with good pace. that's why i had thoughts about telling him to get off his bike, otherwise i would not even bothered to post this here. if he was truly old, it would had been easier to brush it off. but this guy is a total punk. i'm sure i will run into him again, but if he pulls anymore of this premeditated crap, i will take it very personal (and possibly feel discriminated against). if so, he will get it from me before he reach 60.

In my experience maturity is not an upward sloping graph but more of a mellow bell curve. Past a certain point you start seeing weird quirks and ticks pop up that are confusing to the outside observer.... and that is assuming that the person in question ever showed signs of maturity at all in the first place.

Old people suck, eventually we all become old, therefor we all suck.

I think 55 might be old... because I'm 46, and I already feel positively ancient most days.

My impression was that the OP was calling the guy an "old fart" as an expression of anger at the guy's rudeness, not as an opinion that his age had anything to do with whether his behavior was acceptable. OP, sorry you had to have that experience. At least it was a brief one for you; RudeDude has to live with himself, and with whatever experiences made him that way, 24/7/365, and has had to live with it for many years. It's probably a tough gig for him, though he may not even be conscious of how tough it is.

The elderly get a free pass for eccentricity and for a little gregariousness, I reckon. (Court coverage, too.) Rudeness, no... If anything, we older folk have an advantage in courtesy, and therefore less excuse for not exhibiting it. Wey've had more time to learn of its value, and we probably grew up in a time and place where it mattered more than it seems to these days. While violence or counter-rudeness just makes the tennis court a less pleasant place for everyone, it's appropriate to avoid the company of or call attention to the behavior of rude people of any age.
