Good tennis shop in the San Francisco area?

Hello,

I live in Spain and just about everything here is expensive (tennis equipment) and quite limited in selection.

I will be traveling to San Francisco in august and wondered if there's a good tennis shop that has good variety and prices in that area? San Jose would be good as well.

Any recommendation?

When i visited the US the last couple of times, I got TW to send stuff to where is was staying, ordered online and it was there a couple of days later free shipping too!

Hi Dez,

The best option is to order on line, if not there is a shop in "Mountain View" near San Jose, I believe on "El Monte Avenue". Good Luck

If you have a car, I recommend driving to SLO and shop in person at TW. Sure, you could arrange to have TW ship to you, but you would miss seeing Santa Cruz, Monterey and the SLO area. Make sure to time your visit so you can catch the Thursday night Farmers Market -- the best (only?) meat-centric farmers market around.

P.S. I do not know if this will help, but bring your passport and airline itinerary. You may be able to avoid paying CA sales taxes since you are an overseas visitor. This often works when I purchase goods in other countries. Hopefully, it works here as well.

Keep in mind the scenic route will take him/her 5-6 hours from the bay area via the Pacific Coast Highway. Even the quicker interstate route will take almost 3 hours.

The Thursday farmer's market in SLO is fun. It might be the best smelling farmer's market around too. They do love their tri-tip in that area.

I didn't understand that whole tri-tip fascination last year when I was in the SLO-Santa Maria area. You char the thing until it looks like a coal deposit and then peel away the crust. Texturally challenged as cuts of beef go.

Hi All

Thanks for the inputs. I work for a company that's based in the California, I'll be spending a couple days at the Head Quarters and will have a day or two for touring and shopping. I will probably order a few things online but still like to visit some shops, I don't like to order stuff like shoes and clothing online since different manufacturers have different fits....also some rackets that are not available in my area, so I may be able to get a quick demo etc....
I'll be based near Santa Clara so anything in that area will be easy to visit.

Between SF and SJ, there are at least 50 good tennis shops, if not DOUBLE that number.
And there's 37 miles also.
Cheapest is the big discount chains. Little advice and time for you.
Retail is the smallest Mom&Pops, but maybe the best advice and time.
Since you're already on here, I'd suggest buying from here.

See if google and yelp can lead to a few good ones.

I'm conflicted about online vs. brick and mortar. Online places have superior selection and prices, but brick and mortar places have their advantages too.

Not to avert the direction of this thread too much - but what is the TW shop like in SLO? Do you go through a warehouse or something? I just picture a million racquets/strings/etc.!! I used to travel to Cali a lot, love SLO but for some reason have never gone to TW - wasn't playing much tennis back then. Just curious - I was thinking a trip down there again would be fun anyhow, might need to include a stop to TW.

I like to shop at Brad Gilbert Tennis shop in San Rafael (10min north of SF). They carry most brands, and during slam week they have discounts.

There are really only 3 tennis shops in San Francisco, Lombardi Sports, , San Francisco Tennis Club, www.sftennis.com, and *********, www.lombardisports.com. If you have an auto rental there are 2 in the peninsula, Tennis Station, www.tennisstation.biz, and Zalles,www.zallesracquetsports.com/

First off, I hope TW doesn't delete this thread, but they have done so with previous similar threads.

The shop mentioned in Mountain View on El Monte is IMO the best shop in the Bay Area. They have just about every brand, and extensive demos, and they stock pallets and grommets for almost every frame out there.

I find the options in SF to be much more limited.

I work in Mountain View so if you need a ride from Santa Clara to the aforementioned shop, my email is in my profile.

Another good option, if you know what you want, is to see if TW will let you order in advance and have the gear sent to your work address. With a foreign credit card that might be an issue, but if you can provide proof of employment, they might let you do it.

The place on El Monte and El Camino is called Swetka's (small shopping center in the back near El Monte). They carry all the racquet brands, clothes and shoes. They also have a great demo program and a very large used racquet section. Lombardi's in San Francisoc is good and also carries a lot of stuff. They are bigger space-wise than Swetka's, but this is because the also have other sporting equipment for sale there.

i am from europe and will do a tour from san francisco to los angeles, las vegas and back to sfo... i am also looking for good tennis shops in these areas. maybe you have some more ideas for me?!

i plan to visit tenniswarehouse, but i am looking for other good shops, too and in addition some which sell the wilson hope / penn holidays tennisballs. any ideas?

But then again Id be there everyday and that might get annoying :)

Anyone around the Marin area looking for a hit? I have a terrible lack of tennis friends who come ne where close to matching my enthusiasm. I know it's not the right place for this, but as we all know suggesting other tennis retailers isnt really appropriate here either :)
