I'm so effing tired of partners that NEVERbring balls.

I'm the only one amongst all my partners that ever brings NEW balls.

I'M SICK OF IT!

Balls cost $2.19 a can you jerk!

Whats next, going to the court with no strings, or shoes?

You are a tennis player, BRING A DAMN CAN OF BALLS WHEN YOU PLAY!

My friend the other day was like, I have 2 used balls we can use.

GET A CLUE MORON!

Rant over.

God, I'm so sick of these idiots.

No money, mo problems. :)

Hey, does anyone remember the poster who said he simply could not bring himself to open a new can of balls? It was a pretty funny thread. Is that guy still around? Has he worked through his problem?

I thought you were talking about me playing yesterday, not that I didn't have a new can in my bag because I did, but because I wouldn't hit out on shots I would normally punish. That's a whole different thread playing without balls...

I notice there is a tolerance out there by many players that playing with balls that have been used for 2 hours are fine to play with in a new match. I don't agree.

Argh.

I just don't even get why its so difficult.

I'd also add some are playing gamesmanship. I played a Flex League match - rules clearly stated 'home' player brings a new can. Sure enough my opponent doesn't - used the 'these are pretty new' line. And lo and behold, he's a pusher - so he wanted to 'slow' down the game with the balls. Sad.

I hear you! I play with some people who never bring balls. They always "forget". The worst offender in my tennis group makes the most money, of course.

People who never bring balls are usually the same people who never call for court reservations, never set up practice matches, etc. They are very frustrating to deal with. I often wonder how they can come to the courts time after time without balls, and knowing someone else did all the legwork to set up the match. Doesn't it bother them?

I used to play some older guys in the park that did this (but they brought out ancient balls). They would whisper and laugh amongst themselves about how they were pulling one over on me. I never said a word....

As far as the OP's topic goes, there are always those people that never bring a new can of balls. They usually have a bag full of used ones. If you ask them if they have any balls, they are more than happy to pull out a dozen or so.

all of the above. some people just don't like going out to spend money on this stuff and have others do it for them.

I guess I feel a little different than everyone here - maybe I've just been lucky but:

1. I always bring new balls and offer to open my can - granted, I'm usually playing against people better than me (I'm a 3.5 - 4.0 and ask 4.0 - 4.5 players to hit as often as possible) so I feel like it's a $3 lesson - and then if I end up beating the other player they have always insisted on using their can the next time we play.

2. I also play golf. $3 for 3 new balls would be a dream come true. Try $3/ball. Not to mention $25 - $100 for the round, more expensive equipment, etc. Tennis - even at $3 per match - has to be one of the cheapest sports you can play - at least during the Summer. Sure, you can make it very expensive, but no need.

Maybe it's also that I play so many different players that I never hit with anyone enough times in a row to notice who is opening the can.

Anyhow - just thought I'd put my thoughts out here.

Cheers.

i play mainly socially, singles, and most always someone opens a new can or two straight off. One friend opened 4 cans there and then for a hit.
For social i like to have 2 cans, saves picking balls up every 5 seconds. They are either one session old or brand new. And if i am slow opening mine or if i turn up couple mins late i find 2 new cans already just opened.
I bought two boxes couple months back, 24 cans of 3 balls in each box. I have used about 8 cans so far.

The 4 matches I won in my league, the people don't give me new balls. The 3 matches I lose, I nicely give the winner a new can while I take the just used balls since I lost. (This is the rules of the league). It tics me off, I should have 4 new cans in my possesion but I dont. I guess I am going to have to speak up because I am very annoyed.

If you are playing with the same group of people in doubles, you should start assigning ball duties and have a reliable person keep track of it. We have one guy that plays every week and he keeps a running total for the year for each person. He announces who is going to show up that week and who has to bring balls in an email sent ahead of time. We never had any complaints after we started this system.

If I bring a hopper of 70 balls for our hitting session - I don't want to hear any complaints about not bringing a new can ;)

Just wondering, what level are these guys? I can't think of anyone I know at 3.5 and above that doesn't at least have 1 or 2 cans in their bag.

I usually have about 6 new cans in the car, but there have been times I ran out and forgot to replenish.

Most of the time, me and my hitting partners open up two new cans to hit around with.

I just follow these guys who usually play weekly who open a can and play for one match and leave them behind. Haven't bought balls in a long time

I gotta say I am not over reacting. I play with guys that never bring balls. One guy lives an hour away form me and we play in an area that has NO balls.

How can you show up with no balls?

Do you just assume that EVERY time I will supply?

Hey, lets have a BBQ and not show up with any food!

Hey, lets play softball, but don't bring any mits!

Hey, meet me for a game of basket ball with no ball!

Seriously, how do you effing tell these people to bring a god damn can of friggen balls?

I just don't get it man.

Today just threw me over the edge with this guy.

For those of you who don't want to drop a lot on balls, go to costco. I got a case of Penn Championship balls, 16 cans, for $26 there.

Yeah, I have to agree that tennis balls are dirt cheap. What, 75 cents each?

In comparison, golf balls are a sick amount of money. Worst of all is that the more pathetic you are at golf, the more balls you must buy.

Lazarus, quit playing with these cheapskates. Next time don't bring any yourself or leave 'em in you car and twiddle your thumbs and say, "I guess we're not playing today." I betya' they got balls but are just stalling 'til someone else opens their's first. The guy who drove an hour will be the big loser if no one opens any.

Most excellent rant.

Seriously, excellent.

Almost as bad are the pushers who offer up a can of Penn Tributes or some other junk ball that is hard as a rock and difficult to spin.

Yep, pushers all of em. They love it when my screaming forehands sail 2 inches long all night.

I spent two years rehabbing my wrist following surgery so there is no way I'm playing with old tennis balls. I always have new balls on hand and will politely remind hitting partners of my "bum wrist" as I open a new can. Sometimes I'll show them the scar for good measure.

Many of the women I play with show up with their 3 carat diamond studs and ginormous wedding and anniversary rings, so it cracks me up when they want to reuse balls from a previous match. Are you kidding me?

A schedule is helpful, as someone previously suggested. But I'm always ready and willing to supply new balls - it's in my best interest.

Can't say that I get as fired up as the OP...:)

Balls in Australia cost 3-4 times as much than balls in the US. In fact, in many places this is the case - certainly I remember the UK being similar.

Whenever I see a thread on tennis balls on here, I'm simply envious of the prices you pay.

Hell yeah!

Ill join this club, i always bring 2 cans per practice and per match because i hate chasing just 3 balls the whole time. so no matter what i bring new balls and i dont mind opening them either because chances are the guy im hitting with didint bring any anyway.

I can see why you are so pissed, im poor so if i can come with new strings and new balls whats the other guys excuse?.

I'm a bit guilty of this, but only because most times I go to the park with my old practice balls to hit against the wall or practice serving and someone will usually ask me if I wanna hit with them so I guess I should always keep a few cans in my bag lol.

One guy I have played with prob over 50+ times has brought balls once...ONCE. It used to bother me but now I don't even care. I just pop the can. I like playing with the guy so I just let it go. Maybe he just likes playing with me b/c I bring the balls?

Whenever I hit with my friend who is a ex college player, I will ALWAYS pop the can sometimes two. I refuse to let him open the can since it is a privilege for me to hit with someone at this level.

A pusher who I used to play with regularly is one of those who has a dozen ball in his bag which he swears are good. I have never popped a can with him. I will give him his advantage and beat him at his own game.

Good points.

When I'm playing 5.0+ players its a privilege.

I love the game so much and I'm so excited to play that I love the sound og a can of balls being opened.

Its just...........for the love of God, why show up EVERY time without balls?

I know a lot of guys I hit with KNOW that I have new balls all the time. I think they definitely take advantage.

Its such a small cost. And its not the $.

Its the idiocy!

Argh.

Tired of it all!

I usually stock up when I come across a sale. This spring, Target had all of their 3-ball cans on sale for $1.89. I had an additional 10% off coupon bringing the total down to $1.70 a can! I filled my hopper and still have 15 cans left. I always have a can or two in my bag.

This may be a stupid question, but have you actually talked to these guys about it? If you did what was their response? If you just sit quietly and have anger inside each time you play- you have nobody to blame but yourself. A lot of cheapskates get away with things because nobody calls them out on it. If you call them out on it and they still refuse- just find another group to play with if it bothers you that much.

I rarely pop a new can for rallying, but every time we play "real points," be it flex league play or practice sets, new balls get popped.

But I am so anal about the quality of my balls that they don't get used much before being relegated to hopper status. Then hopper balls get relegated to "oops I hit that one over the fence... no, just leave it" status.

I think some of you guys are overthinking the whole "pushers and their plot to destroy you with slow balls" thing.
I never used to bring new balls until I got a job, and many other kids I played with didn't either. It had nothing to do with their playing style.

A friend of mine and I have an arrangement. He opens balls every time we play. I bring a six pack of my favorite beverage and we are good.

He gets to pick the balls he wants and I get the more important decision.

You need to get friendly with some of the Qantas FA's on the SYD or MEL to LAX run. They could buy some while they're here. Think how many cans a A380 could hold! :)

..kids I played with didn't either...
That's fine. I know I was talking about adults - and presume most of the others were too.

The pushers I play are adults, with jobs- often good paying jobs. It's not a money thing most of the time.

I understand kids or the unemployed not opening new cans everytime. I am lucky to be ok financially and whenever I hit with someone still in school (college, grad schl) or just out, I always open the can- I think it's appreciated.

I usually only open a new can of balls if I'm playing a match. More often though, I'm just practicing/hitting and for that I typically reuse 6-10 recently opened balls. I don't need brand spanking new balls to drill crosscourt rallies or whatever it is I'm working on, and it's a lot more efficient to simply pull another ball out of my pocket to start a new rally than having to pick up all the time, which is what you get with only 3 balls in the mix...

In general I think I'm probably on the cheap end of things with how infrequently I offer to bust out the new balls -- I just don't see the need when plenty of "almost new" balls are readily available. However, I do know someone who not only never brings a new can of balls, but he never has ANY balls in his bag. None. Not even practice balls. To me it's more amusing than anything. How a tennis player can manage to not have a single tennis ball with him is beyond me. That being said, he's a pretty decent hit (ie. he's better than me *cough*) so I usually let it slide :)

We have a regular who plays doubles with our group who purposely shows up 90-120 minutes later than everyone else just so he doesn't have to bring balls, & so that we're all tired & he can try & take advantage of 'tired' opponents. Only problem is, we refuse to open up another can of new balls, & he rarely if ever wins a lone set out of the 2 or 3 he only gets to play. No matter how many sets of singles/doubles we play in 1 session, we only open up 1 can per court as a result.

Oh, that makes more sense. Thanks for explaining it.
And yeah, it is appreciated.
I have a source of income, but even so it's barely enough to have a car a bit after I drive, especially after what this forum's done to me. So I'm sure the balls are appreciated. I know I'd love it.
