Tennis characters - got any stories?

I read an article about "tennis characters" which was quite enjoyable. Tennis is a sport that attracts a wide range of personalities and ethnicities which contribute to making the sport so much fun to play, you get to meet and play so many different people with different games. I've played a guy with 30 tattoos, one who said golley gee willickers repeatedly after missing a shot, one was nicknamed "Peter The Cheater" for his atrocious line calling. I saw a guy in his mid 40s wearing the red shirt and black capri pirate outfit of Nadal. so many nutters.

Check out this article, maybe it will help you recall some of the tennis characters you came across...

Haha! I had a friend in high school that used the "out by a pubic hair" - been awhile since I heard that one!

I played a guy I called, "Turrets boy" because he would cuss his head off - DURING the rally. If he hit a stroke and it wasn't as good as he wanted it to be even though it went in, he'd cuss (rather loudly) immediately after. Annoying yet oddly entertaining during longer rallies....and that was when he was winning  Even if you weren't playing him, you always knew when Turrets boy was around!

I played against Capt. Lou Albano a couple weeks ago. His name really was Lou...

Man, I had forgotten this one:

So there was a guy who played/plays league here in Mpls, who had a successful 3.5 team, and most of the team was bumped to 4.0. He wasn't happy, because his team was comprised of older guys who weren't really competitive at 4.0.

So my dubs partner and I show up to play our match against his team, and it's the week before Christmas. He shows up, and warns us that he was at a company Christmas party earlier, and had had a few. He then proceeds to pull out a warped Donnay Borg Pro, and starts warming up with it. Plays the entire first set with it, and then pulls out his normal frame for the second set, and not much changed. My partner and I won 6-0, 6-1. We still talk about that match to this day and have a laugh about it.

He was so frustrated with being bumped that he had decided he was going to essentially "throw" every match to get bumped back down.

I occaisionally play against a guy who screams like Sharapova, but hits the ball like 20mph. He'll grunt like he just bench-pressed 300lbs, & next thing you know your charging toward the net to return this soft, short, & floating duck:)

There are certain tennis situations that, I am very ashamed to say, bring out my inner batchit-crazy arsewipe.

Maybe he's in pain.

A real character ..not in any positive sense of the word mind you :) .. that I've to mention is this guy who happens to play in the same center.. and he gets so loud screaming at himself.. possibly in some European (sounds like Russian) language.. so much so.. that people at the far end of the tennis center.. say 4-5 courts away.. would stop and laugh it out.. now I can only wonder what he is cussing ;)

Just to add on... everyone is so grossed out by his antics.. this one day he went full speed to retrieve a shot and fell real bad.. this is probably the first time ever I saw this happen.. "no one" asked if he is okay!! ..

While I've not played with her or against her, I've been on the court next door. And she smoked. Between points. Kept the lit cigarette in the fence behind the baseline. How she's still kickin', much less playing some decent tennis...is beyond me.

Sadly, most of my tennis mates are like me, fairly boring. :p

During my earlier playing days I played a tournament against someone who every time I win a point will say out loud "good shot boyeeeeeeeee". I must admit his antics got to my skin enough for me to be bothered by it and eventually lose the match.

Another is this guy who was playing a tournament in his jacket and sweat pants in the middle of summer! That's not what made him a character though. He was playing against a guy who just loves to hit very high lobs. What this guy did a few times while waiting for the ball to bounce and hit was just hilarious. One time while he was around the baseline he set his racket down and pretended to tie his shoes. On another he stuck his racket between his legs pretended to comb his hair. Yet another is while he was about halfway inside the service box he literally took some violent wind ups before hitting a drop shot. I guess he was doing this in spite of his opponent. Nevertheless, it looked quite funny.

what is the correct pronunciation of Boyeee ? is it like "Boy - yeeee " too bad it unsettled you. too bad you didn't have a good retaliation to it.

The tying shoes and combing hair is great. I hope to have a chance to try it one of these days.

My high school tennis coach, sadly tries to be like a Federer mixed with Roddick and Nadal :p embarrassing when he gets beat by a "pusher" as he called me.

Played a mixed league match once against a married couple. The husband was wearing a set of radio headphones and listening to an NFL game. It really pissed me off and he was real cocky. It was a close match, but his wearing the radio gave me the extra motivation I needed to win.

Towards the end, when they were losing, he took them off and started arguing with his wife. Maybe that's one reason he wore the headphones, this couple was noted for brawling.
