Sick point from rally for relief

A pretty embarrassing day for women's tennis. Finally, it is revealed just how inferior the WTA tour is to the ATP tour.

I expected the point where Fed when around the net post and Courier was joking about being able to smell his cologne from the umpire's chair...

Seriously, what did you watch? It really wasn't that bad for women's tennis. Stosur hit a clean swinging forehand volley winner from half court on Fedal. Clijsters also hit two clean forehand winners on Federer and Nadal. Everyone was impressed with how well Stosur and Clijsters did against Federer and Nadal.

It's not so much that they made loads of egregious errors (although they made a few). It's more the fact that Roger and Rafa were just messing around with trick shots etc. in the spirit of the occasion, while Kim and Sam were giving it their best and still not making much of an impact. In other words they were taking it too seriously. It seemed as if they wanted to take this opportunity to show everyone that they can mix it with the men, when the occasion was all about light-hearted entertainment for a good cause.

The women KNOW that there is a lot of sh*t talked about how inferior they are, they need to go out there and hit well and look the business, it's good for them and their sport. They have a lot more pressure on them than Roger and Rafa in this exhibition. And wouldn't you want to test yourself out against the very best? How often do you think they get to hit with these guys? Never!

That's exactly what they shouldn't do. It looks so pathetic. This wasn't meant to be a competitive match. It was meant to be a bit of fun. If the girls had messed around like the guys then the subject of inferiority wouldn't have been raised. But because they made such a blatant effort to play competitively and then couldn't handle Rafa and Roger's joke shots, they made it impossible for onlookers not to start weighing up in their minds how much better the men are. It's a shame, because the occasion should have been light-hearted entertainment rather than a match for gender superiority in tennis.

Don't be stupid. It's just a bit of fun.

Dude, would you expect them to play like men? I think they played really well. How can you expect them to generate the kind of power Nadal or Fed would when they play seriously?

I DON"T! I just think they shouldn't have tried to compete with Fedal in what's meant to be an uncompetitive match. They should have just taken it easy, had a good time and entertained the crowd.

We wouldn't have had a fun point like the one in the OP if they didn't. There were also some other nice points. It also seemed that the crowd was having a really fun time. I mean they came there to watch some tennis, not just to watch players chit chat. Even then, where does the inferiority of the WTA come in to the equation?? Plus they made the guys move around quite a bit!

I agree with you totally. It was to be a day to entertain, make jokes, laugh but only A-Rod and Novak can do that. So the women tried to make it competitive. Big mistake, they had no chance vs Fed & Nadal. And the crowd was there to have fun, not to see a serious tennis match. Once A-Rod and Novak left, the fun was over. Everybody thought so in the chat room, they said, bring back the funny guys....lol

Having Rafa and Rog, trying to be funny would have sucked. LOL. Nadal's English is extra sucky in these kind of situations. Fed, needs support to be funny. Unlike Novak and especially Roddick, they are mo entertaining playing tennis.

indeed. seemed to me that roger & rafa are in fact even superior in "joke/fun mode".

not that it would be new to me or most others but it wasn't necessary to show everybody else. they could've just played along.

such an event needs the mixture of fun playing (roger, rafa) and genuinely fun players (andy, novak) to be successful. well, most of the women were neither.

edit: if any, clijsters was the only competitive wta-player. should arouse some criticism (or admiration) how a tennis-mom in her late days can easily outplay the rest.

The men weren't moving their feet or hitting nearly as hard as they can and the women were trying and they still could hardly keep up.

Rafa and especially Roger can be funny when the occasion is right- their exhibition with Sampras and Agassi comes to mind. It didn't even seem like they had mic's to talk

They should've kept the original cast out there and just added Rafa and Roger in. I would've probably dropped Justine and one other girl to make room for Clijsters and Stosur. Justine didn't entertain much at all. Probably Zvonareva, Ivanovic and Azarenka had their moments.

Are you kidding dude? In the next few points you can see Fed and Rafa joking around with chip lops, slices, and still controlling the rally.

Wow, way to take things out of proportions. Maybe if the women are so inferior, it should just be ATP?

And speaking of such, are the men so inferior that Novak could get a winner while sitting down drinking water?

Seriously, I don't care what you lot say, it was great. I wasn't watching it for the tennis but the fun they were having. It was great from that aspect, look at it from that position.

btw, the women weren't trying either...

Why does this have to turn into another WTA vs. ATP contest?

This whole discussion is completely blown out of proportion.

A charity event......

I thought both Clijsters and Stosur were generating almost as much power on their forehands as Federer and Nadal were. I was actually quite surprised and impressed.

Same here. Obviously they'd lose if it was REAL doubles... but it's not as lopsided as some people on here are making it out to be. They can rally with the guys all day long, not way behind on power.

This is the point. Stosur and Clijsters would never have been able provide amusement and humour. They just don't have the skill. So instead they played a if it was the final of a slam while Rafa and Rog played like it was a trick shot show and were still making fools of them. If Kim and Sam weren't trying so hard and played some trick shots, messed around, made a few jokes etc. then it wouldn't have been so awkward and pathetic.

That was the best point.

I agree they should have kept the format from the first round — definitely more fun. Next time they should have Rod captain one team and Novak on the other, so they have someone to keep it light.

I'm not sure why this became a thread to bash on Kim and Sam; of course, the women aren't going to possess as powerful shots as the men. But there's more to tennis than that. If you don't agree, just replay shots of Rafa slamming forehands with a beastly grunt and ignore the rest.

In comparison, I thought both women did well. And they did better in the ping-pong tennis round. Rafa and Rog didn't seem to get the hang of sharing shots equally; perhaps that's where Sam and Kim had an edge being female.

Yes, because tennis is all about generating power on the forehand
Yes, at least that's what Federer, Nadal, Cljsters, and Stosur believe or else they'd be pushing cream puff forehands in every match they play instead of hitting their forehands as hard as they do.
