Oracene Price, mother of Venus and Serena Williams, is rooting for Li Na in Saturday's Australian Open final, both because she likes the idea of someone new winning a Slam and because she doesn't like the idea of Kim Clijsters winning one. During a succession of tweets on Thursday night, Oracene bashed Clijsters, calling her dubious and comparing her to the mythological beast, Medusa.

Wouldn't it have been easier to go the Australian Open website or Yahoo!'s tennis page (plug!) rather than tweeting the question to her followers? Of course it would have. But then Oracene wouldn't have been able to show how little she cares about tennis when her daughters aren't involved.

Somebody evidently tweeted her the answer and Oracene reveals she's pulling for Li Na. That works. I think I am too, if we're being honest. She then explains why:

The first two sentences make sense. It would be cool for a Chinese player to win a Slam and it is nice to see first-timers winning. That's why I expect to be rooting for Li Na when she takes the court against Clijsters at 3:30 a.m. ET on Saturday. But what's with the "I don't want my vision blurred" statement, you ask? We'll get to that in a bit.
In response to the above tweet, a follower of Oracene asked whether she was pulling for Li Na (in case it wasn't obvious). The response:

She thinks Clijsters is dubious? Does she mean morally suspect or not to be relied upon or doubting? Was there a previous run-in with either Venus or Serena that we don't know about? Is she still mad about Serena's infamous foot fault against Clijsters in the 2009 U.S. Open? Oracene doesn't make it clear. It's a strange insult regardless of the reason.

"The Madusah scare" sounds like a band playing the tent at Coachella, so I'm guessing Oracene means the Medusa stare, a reference to the mythological maiden who was robbed of her beauty by Athena and made so hideous that you turned to stone simply by looking at her face. That must mean Oracene either thinks Clijsters is ugly, has snakes for hair or will be beheaded by Perseus in an attempt to rescue his mother from the evil grips of King Polydectes. I'm guessing it's the third one.

On one level, I appreciate Oracene's straightfoward style. She thinks what she thinks and doesn't care what anyone says about it. It can be refreshing. On the other hand, taking shots at Clijsters for no apparent reason is the definition of classless. Oracene says she doesn't like dubious people, but is fine with her own insolence?

Bashing somebody as genuinely nice as Kim doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Disregard it is better.

Really quite hard to figure out where that one came from since neither Venus nor Serena ever seemed to have any problem with Kim and are on good terms.

Just because her daughters aren't in the finals and Clijsters beat Serena at USO 2009 doesn't mean she needs to take shots...

Funny since Kim mentions Serena as one of the nicer girls on tour, and the two usually seem to be friendly even after the 09 USO incident.

Williams family keeping it classy. Her daughters are not even close to being the most gorgeous women in the world. She should learn to keep her mouth in check a bit more.

If it's true that Oracine wrote that, it's weird. She of all people wants someone new to win a major? Did she ever feel that way when her daughters were in finals?
I hope she's not holding the Indian Wells incident against Kim. No matter who's side you're on about IW, you know it's not Kim's fault.
I wouldn't hold it against the players if their parents are weird. That would make Jelena Dokic, Mary Pierce, Andrea Jaeger, Alexander Stevenson, Alla Kournikova,Andre Agassi, etc., etc., all bad people

This surprises me. Oracene has usually been incredibly level-headed, friendly, and diplomatic. I can't imagine how Clijsters is "dubious". Did something happen between any of the Williams and Clijsters?

We don't really know how "genuinely nice" Kim is as none of us have a personal relationship with her.

However, if that was really Oracene tweeting that stuff...what a bad idea to publicly bash someone.

She might make these in jokes for her friends, but they shouldn't be for public consumption.

That said...I too am rooting for Na Li and for history to be made.

Damn, that is just brutal. Clijsters is the most influential player since she return. Not only she a great champion, she played exos to help raise relief fund. An ideal roll model. Oracene is bitter b/c her daughters cannot even compare to Clijster's pinky. Such an idiot!

How can anyone root for her daughters anymore, or even being a fan of them.

I will never watch the two sisters in action if they ever play each other !!!!!!!!

I'm not talking about achievements, but pure class and the better person to look up to. Especially with Serena, she is an embarrassment when you compare to Kim.

I agree what she said about kim was not nessasary. but dont lump all the williams together because of the mothers action venus is one of the most dedicated nicest women on tour. And serena is just intense thats who she is but never disrespectful and all the comments about there looks is also ridiculous shows how stupid and shallow some of you are. grow up and realize its Oracine who feels that way not the williams sisters if this is even true.

This is true, but there seems to be a few people who take any opportunity to bash Serena and Venus... so they certainly would let this opportunity pass them by.

If their mother did indeed write these things, it is very unfortunate and I am sure they are very disappointed in their mom.

she seems good with serena but i notice that after venus lost to her in 09 and 10 uso their handshakes went that good. venus was smiling but kim was tryign not to look at her.

It's not an opinion...I've have watched so many of their matches, and witnessed Serena's outbursts on court, gave no respect/credit to players that beat her, and even trash Jankovic/Safina for being ranked #1. You call that nice? Think again.

The WS and their family are rooting for Na Li not b/c they are her fan, but simply don't want Kim to gain anymore glory.

How do you know who the Williams Sisters are rooting for?

It is obvious that you don't like the Williams Sisters. I am sure you have lots of "reasons"/justifications for that dislike without regard to the validity or invalidity of those "reasons" ...but honestly, who cares?

You dislike 2 tennis players that you do not know and will use anything and everything to justify that feeling. Take a number, get in line.

You can't logically blame the sisters for something their mother may or may not have said, but I'm sure you still will. So who cares.
