played a couple of holes... this is for dak95 and aimr75... I haven't seen dak's, but aimr75's swing is prettier than mine.

although I know the swing is basically sound, verified by the swing data, I got a bigger surprise (in a humbling way) looking at my golf swing than looking at my tennis :)

like they say - what it feels like is not what it looks like, and what it looks like is not what it feels like.

Hunter, here is why my FH is so screwed up... (make sure you watch the very last rally).

The game is too fast to change grips, so basically it's conti grip both sides and the forehands loops are hit to the side of the body... the swing paths can be categorized as wheelhouse 'outside in', instead of the 'inside out' that tennis are usually taught.

So after playing this for 30 years, especially thru childhood/adolescence, when the body was growing..... this is the only way I can swing.

I remember a few months ago, somebody who used to be a table tennis pro in China, posted a tennis video, and his tennis FH has a lot of common features to mine.

Also, the table is so short, the game is all about brushing up to make the ball dive down, that's why my FH swing path is so steep.

You need to be able to adjust betweens games. For me I started tennis and table tennis at early age and can adjust my forehand for each game.

It's easy to change grips between points...

even after a fast hard hit approach shot when i come into net it's pretty easy to switch to a quick conti. to put away a volley

Give me a little time..I am trying to get a space to set up a pong table and robot for my friends and I. I will then film myself in pure beast mode for your viewing pleasure.

I mean that in a G rated sense of course.

have to share a bit of misery of the past 2 days to some TTer's pleasure... yesterday, led by 2 strokes into the 17th hole, lost the lead, then lost in the first sudden death hole.... today, again led by 2 strokes into the 17th, missed the 18th green by inches, bogey'ed the sucker, he pitched to within inches from 24 yards.... tie ball game, then I lost in the 2nd sudden death hole....

Ahh you're a real player. I could never hit those shots (or with that grip for that matter). The only "weapon" I have his a backhand slice that I can get a bit of side spin on. Either way, it's a fun game. Kind of reminds me of playing tennis if everyone was really good and consistent.

So it appears with that penholder grip it's pretty much just a waiting game on the backhand until they give you a forehand.

penhold has generally 3 categories -

1) pushing/blocking BH + loop attack FH - a lot of pros actually play this way.... although in the video it looks like I am blocking on that BH side, I am actually chipping most of the time, which is different from block. there are a couple of shots I show what I do usually, but can't too much in the video because that rubber is crap.

2) loop/attack both BH and FH - this is my style... on balls that the 2nd bounce would be over the edge of the table, I usually loop and attack the BH

3) slicers - very rare with penhold... most slicers are handshake holds.

why?

the fact I can't hit a textbook FH doesn't mean I can't teach one.

the principles are the same - kinetic chain and hitting face control.

but making it so so easy to ur studentbody while u urself havent been able to learn it in 30 yrs, isnt that a bit funny? ohh i know, u havent had u as a teacher, they do, ohh wait, u have had u as a teacher, full time even, ohh im confused, pls enlighten me, oh u wise one.....

not to brag - it only took 9 indoor sessions, to make an inconsistent junior to totally change it's swing thoughts, and point construction mentality, to post a 6-1 set against a former D1 today... and you can see from the kid's face how he is a true believer of my stuff.... now granted that the D1 guy was just doing me a favor, but playing after a LONG lay off, and being totally rusty, and was basically playing at 40% of his prime level... but still, 2 months ago the kid would have no chance... he was basically playing like you my friend, by dumping every 3rd ball into the net.

is that the same former D1 guy that u have beaten 200 times in a row, he must be really tired of being out player and out smarted by mediocre (table) tennis players, would love to see a pic of his face next to the believer face of the kid, does that mean that will see hundreds or thousands of junior players with ur forehand in the near future, pls i cant bear the thought, groups of little believer kids with cheap wall mart t shirts with ur pic on penholding a tennis racket. By the way i play decent tt myself and could probably beat ur ass without breaking sweat.

what would Monday be without a video.... arche3 you can make another smart *** comment on what kungfu style it is.

not much new to look at, except the light is better from this side.

You don't really need to make excuses, your forehand is not totally orthodox but it fall within the scope of "normal" in my opinion. Your backhand looks pretty solid. I would imagine that you could beat me on consistency alone, particularly if you place your shots well.

thanks for the 'normal' comment... now I can sleep better :)

by the way.... after the camera fell down, I actually tried to hit a few fh in a more text book way, by move the weight around..... it still feels awkward, and there is no extra heaviness on the ball, because the text book action will not allow me to add forearm/wrist power...

plus bringing the right side forward at the finish just feels like extra work to recover to the squared position.

I am no Rafa, but I think Rafa prefers buggy whip in match play, partially due to the same reason... by finishing square to the net, he is ready for the next ball right away.

Dozu and I played competitively for a set and a tb over the weekend, and I can tell you his game is better than his strokes. He hits unorthodox, but he has great control and placement and moves the ball side to side and front to back and mixes spin and depth very well, all without missing very much. Anyone belittling Dozu's game based on the lack of prettiness of his swing doesn't really understand tennis very well, IMO.

I know a guy with a game almost exactly like that. He has awesome placement and consistency and he can handle a lot of pace. If you saw his strokes, though, you would think he wasn't a great player.

I think one of the biggest weapons these types of players have is what you described as "moving the ball front to back." Everyone knows about side to side movement, but many don't realize how difficult it is to go from a deep, high bouncing ball to a short, low bouncing slice.

You know, I'm really starting to believe you can only rate a players' game by PLAYING with them. There are a lot of great players whose strokes don't look great, but their game is actually good. Even a video of match play isn't sufficient. You really can't understand what it feels like to be playing in that match or returning the players' shots unless you're in the match.

When we get together you need to teach me the buggy whip. I can't seem to get it. Maybe its because I need to stand more open. ? not sure.

compare Rafa's WW fh, to his BW fh...

he'd finish the BW fh almost square to the net, while the standard WW finish would have his left shoulder pointing at the net.

in other words, the BW action is more CLOSED (from the start of the forward swing) than the WW action. (the amount of shoulder turn would be both about 180 degrees from the end of the backswing to the end of follow thru)

I was goofing around last night in a practice match... this guy I played 8 times already. beat him every time. I started buggy whipping after I won the first set 6-2. I lost the 2nd set 5-7... and lost the TB. Because I was trying to BW all my FH's. I forced myself to hit the BW even though it for some reason messed up my movement. probably because I am unsure how to setup my feet to hit the shot. after I lost the 2nd set i went back to regular FH's but couldn't get the groove back after all the flailing on the BW...

LOL.... i think i saw you have a true SW grip.. with contact point forward, maybe BW wouldn't be the optimal 'standard' FH ...(but who knows how Rafa did it.. he is not human).... but never the less, could be a great option while running full speed to the right, when the body is in a 'forced closed' stance.

I have an Eastern grip with slight SW flavor, so the contact is naturally delayed to my side, and it's natural to be a bit more closed.

I'm gonna lay off the BW. lol. I might be too old to try to learn something new. Probably better off just doing what I know and keeping errors to a minimum.
