Just was on a retreat...

...and it was the best three days of my life! Ok, maybe not, but it was definately something that I wouldn't pass up for almost anything.

Where to begin about my experience?

I felt extremely enlightened. I actually am self-confident, though I wasn't before. I have few doubts about myself. And I made some good, new friends!

I didn't think about tennis for all the days of the retreat. Literally, not one second. Yes, you might call me crazy, psychotic, mentally inane. But I'm not. I didn't feel ANY stress or pressure from the outside world. I was there, just there, no where else.

I really can't put anything else in words, but I would most highly recommend going on a retreat for a weekend; it is worth the price. And yes, it is almost as much as a racquet, but it is so much more valuable.

Anyone else been on a retreat? What are your experiences?

"modest doubt is called the beacon of the wise" wrote Shakespeare, and I agree. Intellectual power comes from doubting what you see and doubting, or at least challenging, your own beliefs. Overconfidence is not a blessing. I've been to several retreats (Omega Center, in Rhinebeck, NY) but don't feel overburdened with confidence.

I've got a friend who spent a long weekend at a Trappist monastery in Kentucky; the one famous for Thomas Merton's residency. Really benefited. But then, I think most people would benefit by just unplugging for a few days.

What exactly do you do on a retreat?

What don't you do?

I was on a high school youth group retreat, so just add capture the flag to the rest:

quiet prayer, no electronics, you and God, you and small groups

it depends on the retreat in all honesty...

didn't think about tennis on your retreat? huh. Tennis is my retreat.

:)

Exactly! All depends: retreating to what? Retreating from what? Retreat as in throw up the white flag?!

To each his own, but to me, tennis is one of the best retreats around.

Glad you had a good time in any event!

glad you had a good retreat!

it's really hard to disconnect for even a few days when so many people have instantaneous communication anywhere on the planet (almost) but it can be so rewarding!

i've lead retreats and the ones that go the best are the ones when you don't have to fight the "constant cell phone" habit.

Yes, Doubting Thomas, God was at my retreat. It was NOT a camping trip. There is a difference. God is omnipresent, you just have to find him. And if you are distracted, you can't. This takes away distractions so you CAN find him...

Ehh, it means "Hand of the Master".

But the reasons isn't that. It is because I was reading something about neo-Star Wars universe about "hands" being people that acted out the will of certain people. I also had to decline "dominus" as part of my hw. Well, I decided I wanted to be a person working in God's name anyway, so just put the two together and came up with the name.

Those are lovely photos. There is no live person depicted in any of them, so I am guessing you are presenting these as evidence of God’s work. Is “God” your explanation to the unexplained? When you saw an airplane for the first time in your life, did your parents tell you that the magical machine was God’s creation?

Sobad,

There are many reasons why posters are not willing to post personal pictures here though. I guess the author of this thread wants to protect his own privacy from those offensive/childish posters. I am very sure if you email the author and ask him about his photo. He would love to do that but it depends on an individual. I would not give out the photo if I believe the person isn't being sincere. I guess it's very easy to know if they are nice or not based on the way they present themselves.

I am a christian. I went to Catholic schools for many years. Yes, I do pray daily and go to a treat if I have time. I love peace and humble myself a lot. I grew up in a tradition of Buddhism. Yes, I have three all in me.

When I was a little, I asked the same question you had for the author. They told me it's Buddha's creation. There was time I wanted to be a pilot for a military school but I failed my eye exam (I am a nearsighted person). But, I am on plane often that smooths me down a bit:).

Blessings,

Nature is God's creation. I didn't put actual people to protect my own privacy and I didn't have a camera... I don't know why you are so judgmental, this thread was to discuss retreats, not to religiously troll...

There are many people out there who are, for varying reasons, are extremely uncomfortable with the topic and will often attempt to sabotage discussions of spirituality. The Velvet Troll is no exception. He will take a benign spiritual discussion and gradually stir it into a religious debate to the point where it will be banned by the Mods, then say, "Well, the thread was clearly in violation of forum policy...".

Another retreat I like is somewhere in a pacific ocean. We were in a camping trip. I remember we spent a lot of time to discuss the chapter of Genesis. That was the first retreat I went after I became a christian. Very memorable but photos were not available now:(

Sorry for being straightforward here. You are making joke about my post. I am not very happy with that. Do I know you by the way? The thread is about retreat (don't you get it). Three years old boy knows what the manner is about when they approach the strangers on the street.

The fact is I don't have time to play with you and reply your posts anymore. I don't interact with people who does not take things seriously. Sorry.

The reason I am replying this post because I want to make sure you understand what does "respectfulness" mean to me.

I am uncomfortable when you quoted my post first (the post was not for you obviously) which directly mentioned that you want to have a party with me? May I know why you say that? What's intention of saying that?

I am trying to be live spiritually. The fact is I don't party a lot like the most of Americans do and seek excitement to fulfill the emptiness of their life such as attacking strangers or attention-seeking on the internet. I do take things seriously whenever I go. I don't think you are and I might be wrong (based on several posts you wrote here).

By the way, thanks for the explanation. However, I do want to point one thing out clearly. I speak several languages and I do speak English without accent. It's normal to have some typing errors when communicating with posters via internet. Sorry, I still have problem understanding a word of SABOTAGE in your context? Maybe, I am not as educated as you are in term of English synthesis. It would be appreciate if you are able to explain it to me in a simple English (it's easy for you to write it up too since English is not also your mother tone language).

You are reaching out to far at first place especially under a condition of harassment. I forgive you.

A} If you can read/write fluent English, you sure don't show it.

B} At least most Americans know that Catholics are Christians. Frankly, your posts advocating that they are not Christians should be taken as jokes.

That being said, this is about a retreat, so please don't turn this into something it isn't.

So anyone who isn't gonna flame/argue random stuff, criticize/mischaracterize a religion or spiritual preference, what is your experience?

Hello author, sorry to bump into your thread. I know you are trying to help this poster out. But the fact is that poster was making a joke of my post to have a party with me, where I found it ignoring. The poster even made a series of comments for what I wrote. It is obviously testing me to see whether I am fit into the profile of what he is looking for and then attacking for unknown reasons-abnormal behaviors. I would not have responded the poster if the person do know what he or she was talking about.

To answer two questions here,

1) I do speak English without accent as I mentioned in one of your posts. BUT, I do not say I can read or write English well:)

2) I have no comments about your statement TWO. Like I said ( before the lent thread was killed), I am not interested in any topics related to religion. I am entering your thread because I love to share with my experience of retreats with you all. Let's all. Since you are a bit unhappy about that, I would have to walk away without participating in this thread.

In my opinion, Catholics are one variety of Christians. However, I was told in no uncertain terms by Kaptain Karl (erstwhile moderator of these forums) that Catholics Christians. He is Christian, and most certainly American.

I went on a retreat once, a long time ago when I was a teenager. I liked everything there .... except the religious part of it. Ever since, I have gone on several hikes, camping trips, and general retreats from the daily grind. None of these trips had any religious component; all of them were wonderfully invigorating.

Manus,

The seeds of this thread's undoing were planted long before I showed up (which is not to say that I condone such actions).

That said, I think it's sad that people feel the need to attack other's beliefs when these beliefs are doing no harm. If you want to go on a retreat and believe that it was a good, healthy experience, you should be able to post about it without this becoming a fight about religion. Sadly, that's what's happening/going to happen here. I'll gladly stop posting to Tina and will say that although I am not Christian and don't believe in the Judeo-Christian God and don't universally subscribe to the beliefs espoused in any religious text, I do think the idea of going on a retreat and getting in touch with a deeper, spiritual side is a wonderful thing.

Best,

as you may know, just because someone (for example Kaptain Karl in this particular case) writes something on an internet message board doesnt mean there is any truth in what was written. or perhaps you just misunderstood him.

Catholics are the original Christians. Martin Luther's Protestant Reformation was initiated somewhere in the middle of the 16th century.

youre not alone in disliking religion. atheists and humanists usually don't like it. you mentioned that your nature walks were invigorating, but you didn't say they were spiritually enlightening.

I believe that spiritual enlightenment as it relates to Retreats is the topic of this thread. The OP can correct me if my belief is mistaken.

Catholics are Christian. There is a grouping of non-Catholic churches that have some way of reading Catholics out of Christianity, but it's not an understanding or interpretation shared by mainline Protestants.

There are many "urban legends" about the Catholic Church (with over a billion members), but many of these are built around the Protestant breakaway and are not historically credible.

Retreats are good, but I think you have to almost do a "pre-retreat" before you go, so you're ready to make one productive. I'm the kind of guy that generally LIKES the idea of stepping off the rat racing and reflecting, but can't get around to actually doing it.

No, I did not misunderstand him, because I asked for a clarification. And, what he says is up to him. I am merely reporting what I have heard from a practicing Christian. I have no preference, one way or the other, because for me, Catholics and Christians are identical for all practical purposes.

youre not alone in disliking religion.
You misunderstood, and this threatens to make the thread go sour. I meant that I didn't like the "religious component" of the retreat. I didn't mention that I disliked religion. I like some aspects of it, and dislike others.

you mentioned that your nature walks were invigorating, but you didn't say they were spiritually enlightening.
I don't use "spiritually enlightening" lightly because I am uncomfortable about the meaning and usage of the word "spiritual". In particular, I disagree with the way the word has been co-opted by many people to refer only to religious experiences.

I believe that spiritual enlightenment as it relates to Retreats is the topic of this thread. The OP can correct me if my belief is mistaken.

See above. Often, the feeling of spiritual enlightenment could be traced back to stimuli which result in increased levels of dopamine in the brain :) .

Yes, that is a very likely scientific explanation for intense religious experiences. A Canadian scientist is doing research on stimulating parts of the brain to produce religious ecstasy.
