Does Nadal have the most unique strokes ever seen?

How bout those guys with two hands on both sides who use the same side of the racquet for both strokes?

That's why you call them "those guys". It's one thing to have unique strokes it's another thing to have unique strokes that actually work,.

Nadal looks like he hits a trick shot on every stroke. It's insane.....no one can even attempt to teach those strokes.

You've got a point. I've thought the same thing. Who else hits a forehand quite like that? Then, there's the backhand. Yes, I agree he's very unique, but so was Borg...wait a minute, I think Borg=Nadal (jk..), seriously I agree. His strokes are unique.

I think so. There's no one I've ever seen to compare him to. Everything about his game is unique, which is what makes it so exciting to watch. I can't think of one player that I would say, ""_____'s is just like Nadal's.

That's why I'm hooked. He is so original. It's hard to pick a favorite thing (he does so many), but one of the things that blows me away is the way the ball undulates as it's going across the net. It's spinning, revolving, changing direction, looking like it's going out... It is so awesome to see.

I think Nadal is more interested in what happens to the tennis ball off of his racquet, no?

As we know what happens is usually rather impressive...

nadal is definitely up there in "uniqueness" but there are a few others who come to mind, namely:

1. jim courier - baseball backhand and western or semiwestern but flattish, kinda slapshot-like forehand
2. stefan edberg - funky shovel-like forehand, exaggerated back bend on serve; backhand and volleys were classic though
3. monica seles - most unique among the women because of her two handed forehand with non-dominant hand on top of the dominant hand (very awkward and limited reach)

Alberto Berasategui's strokes were a lot more unique than Nadal's. He had an extreme western grip and hit both forehand and backhand with the same side of the racquet.

He reached the FO final and beat Agassi at the Australian Open, so he wasn't a total journeyman.

Yes....The man is a Saint.

He should have a river named after him.

Everything is pretty standard but the forehand. No one hits the forehand so late and so vertically.

McEnroe had the most unusual strokes I have seen.

Berasategui is one of the first names that come to mind when you think of unusual ball striking.

But this isn't the real question, is it? Yes, yes, we agree, Nadal is God's gift to tennis, which didn't even exist until his appearance.

Suspect Nadal's strokes won't be unique for long. Then, again, who emulates Seles?

For the young ones, here is Berasategui wiping the court with Goran at FO'94. About 3 min into the video clip there are a few slo-mo takes of his forehand:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbV6Ye6LIwE

Don't try this at home without the supervision of an adult.

why would you say wiping the court with Goran.
Berasategui never reached a final on any other surface but clay where he reached tons of finals.
Clay was obviously Gorans worst surface, he never won anything special on the surface.

Anyway Alberto´s forehand is the most weird looking i have ever seen.
I don´t remember anyone who had a more western grip than him, but i always loved to watch him play :))

I don't think you CAN go any western than that.

I think if You tried a little bit harder you might actually be able to turn into nadal. Your luv festival hasn't quite reached the necessary level for transformation yet.

I do that too! I use an extreme western, and hit my 1hbh on the same side of the racquet. Admittedly, it is weird.

the most unique strokes ever - probably not

the most unique strokes that allow you to be one of the greatest players ever - I'd say yes

Yes, great post GPT. We've seen so many great unique players and those are excellent examples. Has there been another Jimmy Connors or John McEnroe or Borg, or Vilas, Laver, ...we could all probably add dozens and dozens of unique players. Of course, I do think Nadal is quite a unique player and he's doing it as the the top player in the world. I would say even a guy like Raonic is unique. When I saw that guy play Ferrer at the '11 AO, I was very impressed and he was just different.
