Vortex Extreme Spin Rackets

Yes, I did enjoy it. A racquet that I had ordered, but had been back-ordered came in. I have had some TE problems, and had ordered the new PK xi 5x. I really am not sure which I like best, but the PK is supposed to be easier on my elbow. I also needed less power, as I hit too many out. I do think they are great rackets and Tom is a great guy to deal with. So I haven't given up on Vortex just probably will have to get rid of the PK or the Vortex one. The vortex is about as easy on the arm, but I get more control from the PK.

I am about ready to get my second 116. I am playing better now than I ever have. It is scary! I am currently in second place in my Tuesday night mixed doubles round robin. The best I ever did in the past is 7th place. The Vortex has really help me lift my game. One interesting thing is that if I switch back to my Ki15 PSE, I play horrible with it. I guess that there is no turning back now.

I will probably drive down to pick up the new racket and hang out with Tom again. He is a great guy to talk to. He has given me some information on the racket design and other stuff that I will share when I have some time to post it.

I already knew he acquired wonder wand . I looked on the net for it pretty hard and I could not find a pic.

I always suspected that the vortex was the wonder wand.

Tom probably used the wonderwand mold and drilled a
different string pattern in it?

Anyway I would love to know more about this wonder wand . Of you find a pic or a
description please share.

Tom and I spoke about this recently. The Vortex rackets were developed from the ground up. Tom had numerous prototypes made and tried all sorts of variations until he found a design that plays like the Vortex that we know today. He stuck with the wide beam because it gave the racket the stability necessary to play well with such a wide string pattern. He was willing to do whatever he needed to do to get the design that he wanted.

I really belive the reason they do not have thinner beams is they are using WONDER WAND molds. The WONDER WAND CO. starded around 1995 and was effectively out of business by 2006.

Tom says that this is not the case. The molds were created for Vortex once the testing was completed.

I had the Wonderwand Intruder in my hand. I hit with it for about 10 mins. My ES 100 is the exact same head and throat shape the Intruder is IMO the ES 108.
Thats when i looked up the history of WONDERWAND and found that Tom had bought the company.
Now its not important how Vortex came about but the connection between Vortex -Wonderwand could be summed up as (IF IT WALKS LIKE A DUCK AND QUAKS LIKE A DUCK IT, IS A DUCK IMO)

A couple of things.

First I am part of this Wilson string test. The send me a multi and I am suppose to use it right away until it breaks. I spoke to Tom and he said that it has been done. I just need to up the tension. It should prove interesting.

Second I have the second and strung it up with Spiky Shark in the mains and Forten Sweet in the crosses at 58/60 like the Vortex 15g stuff. I like it a lot so far.

i ordered a 116 but returned it after trying it out . i kept thinking i should have kept it-it is a beautiful looking frame and had potential but preferred my wilson n3-anyway saw one on the bay so i went for it...another 116 which i had strung at 38/32...spiky shark main/prince syn gut duraflex crosses
have played with it a few times ...my comparison to my n3

serve...equal ,possibly better than n3
return...n3 slightly better
slice...even
groundstrokes...this is the one area i need to improve with the 116...overhit at times with it and surprisingly get better topspin with the n3
lobs/touch shots...about even
volleys...about even...maybe slight edge to 116

hoefully with more play i will be able to improve with it and have more confidence in groundstrokes

Took me awhile to get my ES 100 right. Not to review my trial and errors but, i now have it perfect for me. 11.8 oz at 7 pt HL. I now have it strung at 35lb with soft multi.
I now am a happy man!!

From the looks of the offset string on some of these, it looks like the patent rights that applied to the Mizuno Reactor series (and also string patterns from other manufacturers of the period) may have expired. The rest are reminiscent of the Snauwaert Hi-10's. What is old, becomes new again. But Vortex's claims in their press releases that they are the first company to specialize in ultra-wide patterns is disingenuous, at best.

I agree but, no more than any other company. It took me awhile to get the racquet right. Now that i do the string pattern makes a big difference.

so i was looking through this whole thread and found its better to use a windsheild form on your fh? can u hit flat with the 100? i might be interested but dont know... also did you guys add lead to 12 or where do u add lead and which frame? one more thing.. if u string at 70 how much more control would that give than 65?
thanks for help

I think you have to play as you are comfortable. I hit a pretty flat ball. The backhand slice is great and you can play around with the weight to suite you.
At the end of the day i, let it go. I really need a low powered players frame with weight. It allows me to swing away and bring the ball in.
With the VORTEX i was always trying different things to tame the power and stiffness.
I sold it to a racquet collector who is in love with it and want's another. There is magic in the string pattern so, give it a thought.

how did u try to tame the power? where did you add weight and what model did you have? i read on here someone said the stock played better then weight added? also i was wondering what tension u guys string at with the vortex?

also i would want this racket 4 pts headlight how do i get that and im basically confused on head light... sorry if its really noobish but i am a newb...

Buy a balance board from TW it, allows you to play with the lead a lot easier. Dont't get hung up on 4pt hl as i play with 6pt hl but had the VORTEX at 11pt hl. This gave me the best feel.

The vortex tour 95 tour is here and it is the holy Grail !!

Why on earth didn't this company come out with a players frame like this to begin with Ill never know.

It is absolutely incredible:

Specs :

Length: 27 inches

Weight 11 oz unstrung

Flex 70

Balance 6 pts hl

Beam: 21.6

Review? I just put my Vortex ES108 up in for sale section and I want to demo Vortex Tour 95

General:

I also bought the tour 100 and I'll let you know what I think of that racquet as well. The tour 95 is a players stick that packs a real punch and some serious spin. Many agree that racquet head speed is big factor in creating spin. The 95 with it's thin beam and standard length creates far more spin in the right hands than the previous models. I'm a 35 year old 4.5 player with a true all court game....with an accent on serve and volley. I used pro supex blue gear platinum white edition 18 guage.

Serves : 9/ 10

Holy crap! this stick can hit some monster serves. It can hit the flat bbomb but kickers and slices were unreal. The racquet is very maneuverable so
accuracy is dead on as well. The 108 is a bit to powerful and clunky on serve.
The ES 100 is a very good serving racquet as well but it just doesn't cut through the air as fast as the thinner tour 95.

Ground strokes : 9/10

Just perfect. Slice, top, flat, drops all awesome. It blows the 108 out of the freaking water . I found with the 108 you could basically only chip and charge or hit slice. It was way to thick and clunky to het good topspin with. The es 100 was a good ground stroke stick but the 95 just does everything better....with more penetration and more bounce. I did however miss the added length of the es 100. It is the one criticism I have about the 95. I wish they added that half inch or better yet the crazy 28 inches of the yellow stick.

Return of serves : 7/10

Here is one area that I actually think the es 108 and 100 are better. Return of serves are very good with the 95 but it doesn't come close to it's larger cousins. In fact the larger you go with this line the better the returns. The yellow stick has the most insane return of serves I have ever seen in my life. Nothing gets by you!!

Volleys : 10/10

It just doesn't get better. Absolutely the greates volleys I have ever hit in my life. There are two types of volleys....first is the type where you are already at the net as in doubles......the 95 slightly out did all the others in the line. But where it blew it away was in serve and volley tactics as you are approaching the net......return at your feet or in no mans land were just incredible, again blows everything out of the water

Conclusion:

The tour 95 is a real players stick and basically does everything well. Yet it's not like a 90 blx where you have to do all the work. This stick still makes the game easy but you can really swing at the ball and have incredible feel and spin. I have the tour 100 as well and I will try it but honestly I see no reason to as this is just perfection. I suspect the tour 100 plays similar just more powerful....the 95 has plenty of power an no more is needed.

I also would highly recommend using blue gear with this already spin friendly stick.

I have tried every racquet in the line except for the tour 100. Here is my short assessment of each stick and the type of player it is suited for:

Tour 95... 4.0 and up. Meant for an all court player or serve and volleyer or doubles player.

Es 100....3.5- 4.0 Meant for a all court a serve and volleyer or doubles player.
Basically it's just more forgiving than the tour 95

Es 108 .....3.5-4.0 Runner/ retriever. Serve and volleyer or doubles player. If your a singles player with an aggressive baseline game just throw this stick in the garbage.

Es 116...... 3.0- 4.0 .....retriever , serve and volleyer or doubles player. Basically the same as the 108 just a tad more forgiving.

133 ...... 2.0- 3.5..... Retrievers and doubles players....This stick is just incredible for volleys . In fact it's probably the best in the line for volleys and return of serves. The problem is that if you can generate your own power on the serve then this cannon is just way to powerful. It would be a great serve and volley stick if you could serve with it!! If on the other hand you don't have a lot of power then this stick will certain,y provide all the power you could possibly need. This stick is also probably the greatest of all time for retrievers, it's like 28 inches or even more.....you get to EVERYTHINg. It's incredibly light but is a whopping 133 inches. Everything comes back!! Nothing will ever get by you,,,,,,,,,for a fast retriever this is possibly the greatest stick ever made.

I had a USTA match today and used the es 100 as I still don't have enough playing time with the 95 to risk it in a real match plus I don't have my trusty blue gear in the 95 .....just the stock vortex strings.

Anyway the es is very one dimensional and basically I served and volleyed every point and chipped and charged all my returns.

This stick is just so sweet as a serve am volley stick. I won the match and made some incredible volleys. Smash are a breeze as well.

I think I'll use the es 100 for dubs and the 95 for singles . I'll keep you guys abreast as I use these sticks more amd more.

Latest update.......day #2 with the tour 95

The ES 100 vs the tour 95

I cannot believe I'm saying this but I actually like the es 100 better.....but that's only because it suits my style of play.

I'm over 40 and a bit slower now. I find myself serving amd volleying to end the points quickly.

The es 100 is hands down the greates serve and volley racquet that I have ever played with .

The tour 95 is better in every other department. The es 100 is absolutely terrible for serious ground strokes....

If you have a modern game you will love the 95. But for a bit....ahem older players who serve and volley & chip & charge I would go with the es 100.

My final test will be the tour 100. Coming soon to a they're near you!

Just noticed tennis warehouse australia has the 1.38 big banger original reels. Mark Woodfordes string in his open pattern wilson and hi-ten.

Sounds cool . I have to try it.

But didn't woodforde use something else? I think it was green?

Anyway I use the 16 gauge blue gear . I absolutely love it on this stick.

I think vortex made a huge mistake not coming out with the tour player sticks to begin with.

Most people didn't like the other versions as they were not player sticks and are done.

But I swear these tour sticks are the real deal. They are very thin. I flirted with the Donnays but these are better in my opinion .

That's right it was a custom Luxilon 1.55/1.6 !!

Are you going to sell the 95 or was it a demo ?

No because it's within the 30 day limit so I'm returning with a full refund.

The stick was amazing the problem is that I am not.

It's to demanding for me. I'm a serve amd volleyer am the es 100 is perfect for that.

But for today's game with hitting winners from 6 feet behind the baseline the tour 95 is incredible .

I have Horrible groundstrokes but I was hitting decent with it. The fact that I could even attempt to play with it proves how great a stick it truly is.

I recently purchased the new Pro 116 from Vortex. I have been using the ES-116 for the last year and a half. The Vortex has really boosted my ability to compete with younger players. I have moved from a 3.0 to somewhere between a 3.5 and 4.0. I am sure the racket is not the only factor, but it has helped a lot.
Comparing the 2 rackets I find I like the feel of the Pro version better than the ES. It is just a bit more solid feeling. They play close enough so I can switch back and forth though. I just find myself spending more play time with the Pro.
I have been experimenting with strings too. I have really taken to BHBR. I tried the silver version in the Pro because it looks better in a racket that is black, silver, and green. I like the feel of the blue better though.

So there's not much difference between the two? Does it pay to get the new 116?

Dark Knight, sounds like you're happy w/ the Tour 100? I think you tried out the 95 and es100? Do you have any idea what the swingweights are for these frames? They look really stiff but it seems like people in this thread rave about the comfort?

How does the frame compare to Yonex as far as spin?

I don't know how to measure the stiffness but the site says they are 70.

I guess they are pretty stiff but it doesn't feel that way at all. I find the sticks to be very comfortable.

I have not played with the Yonex but I can tell you that this super wide string pattern is amazing for spin. It really helps your game out quite a bit in my opinion .

i have the Tour 95 and have used the Yonex RDX500 Mid and RDS001 Mid. spin is just as easy with the Vortex as with the Yonex frames, but with more put away power and actually hits the flat ball just as easily as spin, so it's very versatile. as far as comparing the Tour 95 with the tweenerish Yonex frames, however, i don't have experience with them.

Wonder who they work for?

Who really cares. You've got those guys from Vantage (or whatever its called now) all over the message board (and remember how ugly that turned a while back), you've had guys obviously pushing Volkl and you've always had reps from Wilson, Head and Prince who pump up their products. Geez, TW themselves are really biased when they review any of the racquets they've had made specially for them (Donnay Pro One, Slazenger Pro Braided or PS 6.0 85). Just have to use some common sense and separate the real information from the hype.

I just wish the guys from these companies would drop the pretense and give us the simple facts about their products. Although I'd be happier if they left us all alone until they've fully worked out their customer service. I've tried to make contact with Vortex in the past; couldn't be done. Had the same issues with Vantage (I know I'm not the only one whose had that problem). Seriously, why bother putting out a product and then making it almost impossible for people to buy it.

Nice catch, man. I thought the ongoing Vortexfest between those two pixies was a little strange, even for TT. One good thing came from this read -- I decided to pull the Big Bubba 28 out of my collection and string it up for some crazy fun and goofing around.

Guys,

You can hate vortex or whatever other company . But what you are doing is actually promoting Vortex more .

No one really is paying attention to this string ; however by constantly posting you are bumping the thread up more and more and thus giving more attention to it .

Now again my stringer tells me that Wilson apparently is coming out with a sinilar string pattern to vortex . Has anyone heard about this Wilson ?
