my strokes (5.5) if interested

Haha thanks alot! I really would like to see you again sometime soon, youve been really supportive of my playing and a friend. If youre ever in Minneapolis we can put you up here too.

And congratulations to you! Tell me more about your boys sometime!

You are welcome! I knew the first time we hit you had the goods to go far! :)

As for the boys, G. is 16 months and L. 6 weeks. G. appears to be a lefty. Geoff and I plan on developing them into a killer doubles team. ;)

If you do stop here on the way to Hotlanta I will of course be happy to give you a good hit, but can also arrange the 'Real Deal' w/ Brian B via my pal who coaches the local DI team. :)

Best,

BHBH

Tony, you must have played great this weekend. Congratulations! On paper, it seemed like the competition was much higher this year compared to last year. Best of luck to you! You should be proud of yourself no matter what.

Great work Tony! I was going to try and make it up for the match yesterday, but the girlfriend just bought a house and we were painting ceilings while we had sunlight.

Once you're back from nats, let's get out and hit a bit - I start grad school this fall, so I want to get some hitting in before September 1. :)

Thanks for the support everyone! The semi-final match didnt turn out the best on film being wobbly on an indoor curtain, and at times you couldnt see much. My battery also died in both the semis and finals, with the semis shutting off after just the first set, but the finals got all of it except for a couple points and the very last game. The footage of the final turned out great, and the match had better rallies too. Im not quite finished yet but here is the link:

Played some of my best tennis ever first set today and won 6-2 6-4. Cant believe I won the tournament, had been in a slump this spring, switching racquets, hurt shoulder, trying things on serve, etc, but put it together for my best tournament win ever. Definitely going to the national playoff this year, will be a very fun experience! I filmed the final and will post the 2 matches up sometime in the next few days.

Congrats man. Thats gotta feel good.

Tony, what camera you use and where do you mount it?
I was so much into the match that I did not see any camera around. The recordings are really nice.

I have a monopod that attaches to the top of a fence so it has been nice to have for these. Camera is an HD Sony Handycam that I got last year as well. It turned out pretty well so hopefully its good to watch.

Maybe I could find a 10 minute segment where its not too bad and post it for ya, ill see what I can do!

You're awesome Tony. I'm gonna be up in Duluth from July 30th to August 5th or 6th. Might have to try and swing something if it works with your schedule (and if you're interested in hitting). :)

Tony - I can definitely vouch for JSV's play - he's a SOLID player. He would be a good sparring partner for you if you can find time.

Yeah maybe, would be fun! Heres two clips of the match with Tyler, just for you. Again not the best quality or very long points like the final

Yeah, looks like you were doing the right thing, get the return back and making him hit that extra ball, not to mention exposing his movement. What happened in the second set?

Haha, why thank you for the positive reference. We need to play again tho, I need some work against big servers, and neither of us played particularly well that day...

What did you do to take Vick so far out of his comfort zone? I do not see guys of his ability get worked so much very often.

It looks like he played aggressively on his forehand and Nelson couldn't get a ball past him off the ground. It also looked like Tony was stronger in the forehand pattern so Nelson attempted to play a little more backhand to backhand cross by changing the direction of his forehand with occasional DTL looping shots. I also think Tony's relatively flatter forehand was skipping through and presenting some problems for Nelson as well. Nelson made things tighter in the second when he started to be more offensive, but Tony didn't give him free points off the serve and played more steady off the ground. Good work.

Nice stuff. I like it that your have an aggressive play style and go for the shots. Half the guys I see online are pushers who just waste energy running down balls waiting and praying for an UFE.

I am not very good but I go for the shots. If you are going to push, then go play with beginner girls. 8P

Great stuff TonLars

Hey Tony, are you coming to play the Futures tourney in Saskatchewan (right next to Manitoba) in a couple of weeks? That'd be awesome!

Thanks

Its at the same time as the Manitoba open, which gives $1500 to the winner. Id like to play a futures someday, but ill never do one over a money tournament thats nearby

Going to have some tough competition this year at the Rochester tourney this year Tony!

You were right, but overall I played well and was able to win. The guy in the semis looked really tough and I thought I was going to have a really tough test, so I came out really ready and played well. I won 6-1 6-2 and was very surprised, expected much different. He is currently ranked 749 for singles and has recently made the semis and finals of some futures tournaments:

Got a few money tournaments the rest of the summer and hopefully will be playing well and ready for the us open national playoffs mid-august.

That's a really good win. You should seriously consider entering some futures
tournaments. Your opponent's ITF results are almost exclusively on clay, so
your aggressive game on a hardcourt was probably a good matchup in your
favor.

Got the Aquatennial tournament again during the weekdays. Rochester draw still not up from last weekend, ill post it when it is. Aquatennial draw has some good players this year, playing singles and doubles this time:

And there is live streaming again with 3 different angles to choose from, and some interviews:

Pretty fun tournament, hoping for a finals rematch from a few years ago with Andres, he is very good.

Holy Schnike!!!

What is the prize money breakdown? How well do you have to do to break even (or get anything)?

Entry Fee:* $108 per player for singles, $54.25 per player per doubles event.

Over $4000 of prize money awarded.

Dayamm Forget Tonylars vs Gage Brymer you would probably beat him since you play for prize money.

Would be a nice match though...ever decide to contact him?

Its not as big compared to some of the tournaments I play, but its local so theres little expense to make up for that, and its fun. I think singles winner is about 700, finalist 350. Doubles winners are probably 200-300 each. Next weekend Im going to Thunder Bay and thats 2500 for the singles winner.

Based on what I can tell with video of him playing and his results, I would have a good chance to win that, but no he isnt playing the tournaments I am as he is a junior still.

That makes sense. I was just surprised that entry fees are $108, but that probably isn't much for open tournaments that offer prize money. And if you are used to traveling for tournaments, then it's basically free for you.

We have one local open tournament that offers prize money each year. I think it used to cost about $100 to enter and offered about the same prize money. The head coach at BYU used to win it every year, just thrashing everyone (he actually played Lendl in the quarters of Wimbledon in the early 90's). These days I see it costs $50 for the entry and only offers $200 to the winner IF they get a draw of 16 or more, which they never do anymore (so the BYU coach never plays now).

It is pretty steep actually for this one. Typical tournaments I play cost $40 for singles and pay $1000 to the singles winner

The other thing to note is that this tournament is played in downtown Minneapolis. They lay sport court in the middle of the city surrounded by tall skyscrapers with spectator stands and high netting to prevent balls from going into the adjacent streets. It is pretty unique and probably costs more to run than many other tourneys.

Sweet. Our tourney has a $15,000 purse, but I have no idea how much the winner gets. Eric (the guy you won doubles with last year @ the Manitoba Open) will be playing in the qualifiers. I hit with him a couple of weeks ago and he said he didn't think you were coming. If this becomes an annual thing here, hopefully you'll come someday.

I'm curious as well. Either he's doing some serious track workouts or he was just born with a bunch of fast twitch muscle fibers in his legs. Or both.

Ditto, this is the lone exception where someone has actually UNDERRATED himself. Tony competes at pro level therefore he is 6.5+

backhand is good. your forehand seems like you are restricting the amount of power you could generate. it seems to me your wrist stays back to much through the stroke. but that could be the way you like it i dont know. also i notice you stand tall when hitting the forehand where if you were to bend you knees more and jump into the shot with your weight youd get much more power.... pretty decent player though, forehand could be more powerful is all id suggest

Just watching the match v Sicora at http://usta.qwikcast.tv/

Have to leave before it actually starts but what did the umpire/announcer mean when she said Tony was 1 tournament win away from qualifying for the US Open? Did she mean any tournament eg this one? And, did she mean qualifying for the US Open qualies?

Best of luck Tony. Your opponent looks good.
