2012 Pure Drive 1st impression

Well, I've had mine for about 5 days now, and have played twice (double and singles).

Me = average club player (3.5 in US rating terms IMHO). My only real weapon is a half decent first flat serve, and kicker 2nd serve, and single hand backhand.

Have been an ardent PD fan and user of Pure Drives since buying the PD Team many years ago. The PD team is the only one through the generations since, that I have not sold, when upgrading to a new generation PD. I would never part with the Team version.

Racquet is strung with VS Touch at 57 lbs. Tourna Tac over grip

My thoughts (bear in mind this is very early days), and overall I do love it!

- Feel = much more solid on ground strokes back hand and forehand - inspires confidence to "go for wiinners"
*It does feel lighter than previous versions, may be due to different weight balance/swing weight, as it feels more head light to me
- Volleys = much much more manouverable (for me) at the net to previous models.
- Power wise - I see/feel it on the groundies, not yet sure (yet) I feel it anymore/as much on serves. It may be that it's there, but perhaps the new cortex system shields the arm from the "oomph". Time will tell by way of number of ACE's I can muster up. But 2nd serve kickers seem somewhat easier (again may be due to headlight-ness feeling)

I do find it overall a real improvement in terms of solidness, and I plan to perhaps demo a Roddick (which I always previously stayed away from due to it's even stiffer characteristcs)

All in All - I'm 100% staisfied, and looking forward to playing again. An iconic Stick-no doubt. The legend continues.

Proud to be a PD user! (trust me I've been in the depths of demo nightmare's and even bought other sticks in the past, only to always sell those and return to the Pure Drive)

I'm using the previous Roddick version -blue and white.

Love the power, especially on serves. Groundstrokes more powerful too. I have an all poly setup strung at 58.

How do you think the new one compares?

Well bear in mind that I've been a regular PD user.

i'd say the 2012 definitely feels more "solid" than the previous PDGT, which does seem to stem from the throat part of the racket. Again may be down to the new cortex, but it seems mopre solid in the throat now

I will add though that mis-hits inn upper hoop - above swetspot - did not yeild same feeling of solidness though

I'm still loving my blue and white pdgt, but your review makes me wanna run out and get a 2012 version. Too bad it's so freaking expensive for me to just spend like this. :(

Hey do you do (customize) anything to your pd? I think I need to put lead strips at 10, 2 spots on mine to make it around 330grs. It's too light at 320grams!

Does the new PD suffer from the same dead feeling that most tweeners have? I love my game with tweeners, but hate that every ball feels like I'm hitting it with a frying pan.

I do get what you mean. I having used Pure Storms as well before, do feel that the box frame type racket does provide that connected feel better than a tweener, but this is an improvement in 2012 for the PD

Does it still feel hollow?

No not at all, except upperhoop mis hits felt a little tinny

How's the comfort level?

This is noticeably a great improvement thus far IMO. Bear in mind though I only played 1 set of singles and 1 set of doubles on different days

How is stability? My concern with ye new pd is with a lower swing weight, it maybe less stable returning heavy ground strokes.

Stability is quite impressive for such a low sw - really is.

I will let you know though as I face some heavy hitters this weekend (weather permitting here in the UK!!).

I am going to get a PDR to demo as well, to compare the 2.

Hi, just out of curiosity, have you had the same string set up in previous Pure Drive versions or have you changed anything. From your initial testing is there a need for a change...for example due to lower SW?

nah, I've always used VS Touch as a preferred string for me at 57lbs is what i settled on, after trialling 54 through 58lbs. Also tried Big Banger, and Excel before, but prefer VS Touch nat Gut.

This is a good question and one which I am pondering, but I've come to a point where I've tried this and that with strings grips, lead tape, and I've found what I like and try and stick to it. My game is mucked up enough as it is, without me making it more of a muddle ;-)

Thanx for the reply,

I am still in denial....a little hope left that a new stick might just do the thing :)
