Rodge on Schedule for Regaining Number one Ranking

OddJack

Well, it was the best scenario possible. Nadal and Djoker not reaching the final so Rodge can enjoy a 1400 points (? more or less someone can do the calculations for a win).

If he wins this, which I think he does, then that's a huge step toward regaining top ranking.

He will also match Nadal's tally of Master 1000 titles won.

Things on top are getting more interesting after today. Both Rafa and Djoker show a decline and the old man is there to take advantage.

Can Rodge reach the top ranking and beat Sampras's record?

The odds are in his favor, I'd say.

He hasn't won it. Isner's beaten the best player AND beaten Roger in his backyard. Just saying...

if federer wins IW, then Nadal falls in the Miami semis and Federer makes the final, and then Djokovic beats nadal in MC, Federer will probabaly be number 2.... I think.

hehe.. now Mandy pulls one from Zagor's book, the reverse troll poster.

There is no reason to think Rodge gave his all in that match in his backyard. It was a Davis anyways.

I wonder how many points will Nadal be in front of Federer as well.

Don't count on the eggs before they're laid.

No he hasnt, but I say he will. Just a prediction.

And, what I was saying was even if he doesnt win the title, reaching the final over the other two is a big points swing, isnt it?

Isner has beaten Fed this year already, but on clay.

Isner played really well, He beat Djokovic, it wasn't that Djokovic played a bad match, Isner hit through Djokovic's amazing defense and return of serve.

Isner is a very dangerous guy when He is on, you can see He is stronger and moving better now, He trained very hard after last year's season.

Roddick already said it's on his racquet the result of their matches, against Fed will a bit different though.

I agree Isner is dangerous, but he is also the type Rodge can chew and spit out all day. Remember he just beat Raonic, who by the way is leading the tour with break points saved, all served out.

Note also that Djoker loss today was not because of Isner aces, Djoker was behind in mini breaks on both tie breaks after losing the points on rallies, not serves. It was Isnger who attacked Djoker's second serve as well.

I dont think it will be the same case with Rodge.

Current Rankings:
Nole: 12670
Rafa: 10175
Fed: 8950+400 if he wins tomorrow

To Defend:
Pre-french + French + Wimby + Pre USO + USO
Fed: 990 + 1200 + 360 + 270 + 720 = 3540
Rafa: 3300 + 2000 + 1200 + 190 + 1200 = 7890
Nole: 3250 + 720 + 2000 + 1600 + 2000 = 9570

If we remove points from here till FO:
Nole: 9420
Fed: 7960+400
Rafa: 6875

If we remove points from here till the end of USO:
Fed: 5410+400
Nole: 3100
Rafa: 2285

So if Fed wins tomorrow, he will have a 2710 point lead over Nole until the end of USO and a 3525 pt lead over Rafa. If he has a good result in Miami, they should really fear Fed taking over Number 1.

Fed has always handled big guys/servers well. Mixing it up, slice & dice, change speeds/direction, come to the net, etc... he does that better than anyone else. Djokovic just doesn't have that variety and shotmaking ability.

Good post!

I still don't believe Fed pulling it out in best of 5 yet against Nadal and Djokovic.

Now, Federer had the toughest draw of them all and came through. So this is encouraging.

Another point is: whenever these guys Del Potro, Raonic and some others start to fall in Nadal's side of the draw Nadal may be packing earlier.

If it wasn't for Nalbandian choking again against Nadal He would have lost even more points. It will be interesting to see Miami's draw.

realistically, Federer making number one without winning a slam would be stupid and pretty hollow. And even if he wins a slam but Djokovic has 3, that would still be stupid. So really the most important thing for me is can he win a slam? Cos if he can then maybe he will deserve a shot at the number 1 spot.

Isner is 3 inches taller than Delpo. Just spin that slice away to his backhand. He will not pick it up. Then Fed can start making off forehands highlight reels.

See, the important part is the number 2 ranking.

If Rodge gets to 2, it means Nadal can go out to Djoker in any of the future tournaments before the final. Just imagine Fed chances in a FO final facing Djoker, or in W or USO.

On the topic of Nole. His play today was so dull and boring. Every time he tried to pull the trigger something ugly happened, and generating even moderate power seemed like some incredible effort to him. He might be more aggressive then Nadal in general but his game is even more one paced and when he's in questionable form like today it really makes him look absolutely woefully uninteresting, to the extent that I'd rather watch Nadal (for realz).

I just hope he doesn't burn himself out for the Olympics. I can see him playing until he's 35 but I don't know how competitive he's going to be, so this year is likely his last chance.

yes exactly. Though before we get carried away, Federer at Number 2 could still draw Nadal in the semis. Imagine the collective groan if that happens

Isner is right-handed so the slice doesn't apply when you serve to the ad side.

Isner is playing great but Roger has been known to handle big players in the past. I think Nole's shot stay high which makes it easier for Isner at 6 9. However Roger keep the ball lower and it's going to be tougher for Isner since he has a hard time reaching for the low ball.

Rodge beat players with brains where spin and power does not apply.

Silly some people here thought Tomic had a cahnce against him with his cat and mouse game.

Fed's played Milos and Tomaz Belluci, who didn't seem to be a slouch in the serve department, this tournament, so hopefully that should have been good practice to play Isner. IIRC someone said before IW that there's about a 1700 diff between Nadal and Fed, so a title win should close the gap significantly.

Regarding the comment on burn out, as we have seen, Fed genuinely seems to enjoy the game and playing more doesn't burn him out, nor does he get "bored" winning the same tournaments. Noel's personality may be different in this regard, it certainly comes across that he has to be having fun outside the game, so we will have to see if he just targets the majors this year.

I see the trophy in his hands already.

Expect to see a nervous Isner in his first ever master 1000 final. If he serves as well as he did against Djoker, he will lose.

Isner hit more winners than Djoker today, what does that tell ya?

Just look at the second serve stats, what Djoker won against Isner and what Rodge won against Nadal.

Can anyone post the match stats? For both matches?

Fed's last 4 slams: F, Q, S, S
Rafa's last 4 slams: W, F, F, F

And Fed's about to become No. 2? Pathetic.

I understand your point but there ARE other important titles besides the majors that make up a season.

Since the 2011 US Open Feds won Basel, Paris Masters, World Champs, Rotterdam and Dubai and will likely win Indian Wells Masters as well. Nadal has wonn zero since last years French. That's 9 months ago.

For à Guy of Federers age and slam tally, being no 1 without à slam would be anything but hollow

Becoming number 2 for a short period of time doesn't mean squat. What are you afraid of?

I am pretty sure, that should the same results in the Majors repeat this year Nadal will be ahead of Federer at the end of 2012.

When did Nadal last win a tournament?

FO 2011 =)
Fed has been on the roll since USO winning 5 titles after that til now. In that stretch, a win over nadal in WTF and today in IW.

If Fed gets back to 2 then he earned it.

Too soon to tell. If he wins bothe IW and Miami, which I doubt very much, that's where it really gets interesting. He doesn't have a lot to defend on clay Masters as well.

Absolutely, he must have forgotten how Wozniacki was no. 1.

Btw, why is this thread here.. Such a spoiler.

Yes, the draw matters alot and Nadal has been very lucky. I was there in his match against Dolgo. He did absolutely NOTHING to win that match, or any other match before that. They just beat themselves, and I am not exaggerating.

He could but still a long way to go. Miami will be even tougher. Nadal and Jokovic will be really hungry after their semi losses so they will bring their best. Plus Murray will be back so a lot of challenge for Fed. Though, if he does win Miami then he has a good chance till Wimbledon to try and get the no 2 spot back. (Maybe even get close to the no1 spot depending upon how Jokovic, Nadal and Murray play)

Nadal and Djoker have been hungry for a long time.

Nadal was hungry in 2009 when he went to W but did not play. Djoker was hungry when he lost to Federer in 2011 FO playing for history.

Nadal and Djoker have worn each other out.

Right now nobody is more hungry than Fed, he has to feed two little kids as well, if you know what I mean.

ARE U KIDDING ME? Nadal and Jokovic are in their prime and they are the fittest on tour. This is their time. Fed has already accomplished a lot. Plus, this was a tournament with a slow surface so they have better chances of winning. Jokovic was very frustrated after his match with Isner becuz he cudnt handle Isner's serve. Nadal will be angry because he lost against a player he usually wins against, especially on slow surfaces...
I hope you were kidding about Fed having to feed his two girls. That dude is one of the richest sportsmen in the world. Rakes in bout 40m a year

Oh please. Federer gets to the final of a Masters and all the sudden he's the best player in the world. Only immature 20 something Fed fans would overreact so wildly. Remember his biggest problem is BEST OF FIVE set matches in Grand Slams. Until he proves himself in best of five this is just more of the same.

Masters don't matter so much when Nadal stops winning them.
