OK guys seriously, excuse? The guy just lost his grandfather can we talk like human beings with a modicum of respect for a sportsman who has to grieve while in the public eye?

I honestly think with what has happened Novak will be more focused on a gold medal than the french.

He probably has regrets about not pulling out and going home for the funeral now. (I still don't know why he didin't) I mean the regular person takes off work for a death in the family and everyone understands.

Had he pulled out Rafa was going to get 8 MC wins anyway and people would have called it a hollow victory instead of a confidence boost over Nole.

Olympics is far enough away for Nole to get his head back on...The French might be too soon not to mention the pressure to win....He's not the player he was last year and I really think that was his best shot at the FO...but Fed always seems to have a little magic left when you least expect it.

LOL.....again I'm wondering if Djokovic will ever lose 'legitimately' in 2012. Historically, it won't matter anyway I guess. The record books will only show W and L.

For there to be a 'next time' there had to be a first time. I don't even count tendintis as an injury by the way. It's a condition that Nadal constantly has. You won't ever find me using that as an 'excuse'. Tendinitis is part of who Nadal is. It is a constant.

I hope he fully recovers in time for the FO. A win there after all this would be an emotional epic conclusion what he has done over the past season.

oh.. it only took you one post do return with the excuse machine in full force!

so apart from being a disgrace of a tennis fan and a shame to all the good Nadal fans you also contradict yourself in less than two posts!!!

Grief can last anywhere from one day to a decade. Tends to be shorter when it is an older loved one whose death comes not as a great surprise, and after some kind of ongoing deteriorating illness, as much of the "grief work" psychologically is then done actually before the death. Djokovic didn't get to the finals by being inconsolable.

OP has a tendency to start these brilliant threads. Will need time off to grieve when his thread is deleted.

I think its basically sometimes people get too focused on a sports or public figure as a source of entertainment, or alternatively as a "thing" to vilify, scorn or mock. The OP's mocking post is really in very poor taste.

It's like they have no respect or comprehension these are actually real people with real lives, events and emotions they have to deal with besides being in the public ultra-critical eye.

I was surprised by the score on one hand, but on the other not. Yet I knew, on tennis forums or comment-allowed sites you'd have threads like this: either trying to make excuses or dismiss the reality of losing an important figure in one's life and how it can affect how you perform in your profession.

Alternatively, you always have the troupe of Nadal fans doing making excuses for him when he loses. I miss the old days where the battles were on-court or between the players and not the self-identified "supporters" who really make it into a farce.

Reality is that everyone has some kind of injury during the year, it is part of being a top player. A lot of the ****s try to ignore all of Federer's excuses but he is rather consistent with them, or he just takes his frustrations out on that player with a verbal attack.

LOL you sound like a Federer fan hyping up a fantasy of Federer winning Wimbledon last year or the Australian Open this year. Djokovic had his year, but he is not on Nadal's level in the grand scheme of things. Nadal has a career of greatness. Djokovic only has a year of greatness.

I'm just curious, I have a question for you. Until you brought it up, this thread had nothing to do with Federer. Why do you bring him up in literally every post of yours? Is he your favorite player? It sure seems like it.

On topic, how a person deals with grief varies. Ultimately Djoker will come to terms with it, and I think he'll be a stronger player as a result.

"Tendinitis is part of who Nadal is."

Quoted for truth.

Actually, I could add one or two other things but I hope Rommil will do the honours.

Hey DOG, I'm not pointing out anything new. Tendinitis is a constant, and has been with Nadal from the start. Tendinitis has also been with Roddick from the start. And Venus, and Serena. Constant. Part of who they are.

Totally agree. What also should be remembered is how close he was to his grandfather.
Some people are just the pits.

In a family like Nadal's, parents splitting is a bigger issue than death of a grandparent. Worse yet is it's an on going issue.

Things i Learned with the Nadal Fans :

  • Divorce is Worse than death

LOL nobody is criticizing Djokovic for grieving, rather the way he is speaking as if the final was all about his grandfather.

"I definitely don't want to take anything away from Rafa's win. He was a better player," Djokovic said. "But it's a fact that I just didn't have any emotional energy left in me."

"I've never been caught up in this kind of emotional situation before," Djokovic admitted. "I'm just happy to reach the finals really under these circumstances. It's been a very difficult week for me to go through mentally."

Calling Djokovic a douc*e-bucket has nothing to do with his grieving. Compare that to Nadal's parents divorcing, Nadal didn't even mention it to the media until months later. Not saying Djokovic shouldn't mention the funeral etc., but why go on about it? It's personal. Why not stick to talking about tennis the way Nadal always has? Especially after a defeat. Bringing the side-issues into it is rather lame.

For me that's the biggest compliments. (Sends a huge hug to NSK)

Gorecki/FlamEnemy, we are comparing death of a grandparent to parent's divorce.

Usually a parent's divorce is preceded with a lot of fighting and tension, and this itself is known to affect children adversely. There are enough cases of divorce and parental conflict for us to know the impact.

otoh, we don't know how close Joker was to this grandpa. I've been asking my family here if they know anyone close to their grandparents and how they were affected by the loss. I've not really come up with any examples of being affected for more than a couple of days. Certainly not the kind of damage that divorce can do.

my dear NSK, a divorce in the family is not something you want to publicize, so don't expect Nadal to immediately declare it. Whereas news of Nole's GP's demise came to him on-court (IIRC). It was already known before he talked of it in the presser, so people would ask him how he was affected.

I don't think we should be comparing the two cases and the reactions, etc.

French Open starts in 5 weeks

"What are the stages of grief?
When people talk about the stages of grief, they most often are talking about the 5 stages of grief identified by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross...
...How long does grief last?
You'll probably start to feel better in 6 to 8 weeks.
"

One of the best ways of coping with grief is distraction.
He might throiw himself all the more into tennis and become better than he already is.
He did manage to get to the final beating Dolgo, Haase and Berdych!
Distraction seems to be helping.

I've experienced both divorce and death of close family member, and I can tell you, from personal experience, that divorce was right up there.
In a way it was even more traumatic and destructive.
When someone close is dying it brings the whole family and all your friends together.
Divorce can split all that assunder.
Divorce with kids involved is horrendous.
If the 'kids' aren't kids though but adults, I believe the pain is not as bad.

You *********s are simply amazing (especially you). The silliest **** base in the world. How can you compare stupid divorce with death? Are you really that stupid? Nadal is a grown up man, so his parents decided to divorce. big deal. they are still well and alive.

Mr. Vladimir Djokovic literally raised a little Novak taking him to tennis courts every day as his parents were busy running their family restaurant. Yes, they were extremely close.

Some of you blind Nadal worshiper think that Rafa's **** smells like roses. Honest to God, I dislike Rafa because of his ******** fan/**** base. Thank God for Djokovic being #1 and Fed still hanging around.

Nadal is in the same house as his parents. Can't any more closer than that. And you are deluded if you think I am comparing one event to the other. You can't put a figure on which event matters more, as it is completely personal and dependent on a number of factors. The point is not to compare, but rather to note that Djokovic spoke about how distracted he was during the final by his grandfather, while Nadal did not even mention his parents divorce. Get it yet? It's not about the event, it's about what was said in the interviews after defeat.

well, of course he was talking about his grandpa, he was asked questions ... duh... Djokovic congratulated to Nadal and didn't offer any excuses.

and to be honest with you, a top tennis player who is a millionaire living with his parents is just sick IMHO. Nadal, who is 25 yo, behaves like he is 15 yo. He can't function without his uncle, without his mom, dad... whatever...I mean which grown up man who has a job, lives with his parents... you tell me?

It's awfully easy to be diplomatic about a personal issue. Surely he isn't that stupid, to feel like he owes something to reporters. He literally focused on it, and rarely spoke about anything tactical or performance-based.

Most people in Asia and Europe do this. 2 forms of it. One, the grandparents live with the grandchildren and parents, so the parents can work, while the grandparents look after the children. And the other form, the Nadals, whereby the only point of moving out is to get married, so if there is no marriage then everybody stays. America tends not to do either of these, and that is probably why America has very poor morals, as young adults are left to their own devices and screw-up.

I know. My problem is not with the idea of experiencing them differently, it's about stating that one is worse than the other as a fact, like you are part of the affected (Nadal's / Djokovic's) family.

listen man. I live in Canada. My parents made me find a job when I was 16yo. by 18, I lived with 4 roommates, working and going to school at the same time. My parents, although pretty wealthy, never game me any money, I had to earn it, and I'm very grateful to them ... for not being raised as a spoiled brat.

There is nothing wrong with granddkids looking after their parents or grandparents. I have many Asian friends here and I do understand that.

But please, but don't tell me that 'America has very poor morals', that's just an utter BS.

Most of North Americans (both Canadians and Americans) are simply raised to be independent. We are raised not to lean on anybody.... we are thought to make our own decisions (good or bad) ... we all have our choices in life ... and I like it that way.

I'm not gonna judge Nadal, he can live with whoever and do whatever he wants to, but I simply believe that is not healthy to live with your parents when you are 25 yo. I would understand if Nadal was poor or handicapped, but he is not. One thing that really annoys me is that Nadal is not using his own brain. It's like everyone else is making decisions for him. It simply goes against all of my believes. And, gosh, if that silly uncle of his would disappear somehow I would become Rafa's fan, lol. Tony is so freaking annoying...

So, my point is that I would like to see Rafa being an independent young man and to start thinking with his own head.

You got to be kidding me. America is the biggest dump on earth, as far as the morals of young adults go. Never seen a more trash-infested place.
you don't get my point. I assume you live in either India or China, not sure. Please define 'moral'. What we have is freedom to do whatever we want to with our lives. Yes, some young or old people make stupid choices, but it's the same everywhere in the world... you guys simply live in repressed societies ... I believe that America is involved in too much **** around the world. As a Canadian am against all wars, Afganistan, Iraq ... whatever. I hate their politics and their desire to sell some democracy to everyone... it's all about their own interest ... however, an average American citizen has freedom to do whatever the hell they want to with their lives ...

again what is moral to you? e.i. are you against gay people? are you against prostitution? you may not like it but Europe and North America are still the most civilized places in the world.

Have you ever been in America? Well, I have and I have met many wonderful people. How dare you to call it a dump. I think you watch too much TV.
