Hge!

Found a HGE at the local Goodwill today, $4! I'm stoked!

Well done! Looks very nice. Check the individual grommets carefully if you decide to restring.

I just cut the old strings out. The grommets look pretty good for how old this is - I'd say it hasn't been restrung too many times. Tube where necessary, but I won't ever try to re-grommet one of these. I did a "frankengrommet" job on a HGE last year and it didn't go so well.

HGE Restrung!

I just couldn't wait. New strings (Gamma TNT2 16 strung @60lbs). New overgrip (Yonex SuperGrap).

The buttcap was falling off, so I unwrapped the leather grip and popped a bunch of staples in it. Hopefully that holds up. I rewrapped the leather and overgripped it, like usual. I used tube in 1 spot, which unfortunately was a shared grommet (10). It was a tight fit, but it worked fine with some loosening from my awl.

One question: the stringing guide I got for the HGE says to start the top at 9 cross (which is a main skip), tie off at 7. This is my 4th HGE, and every time they come strung differently. There are always more crosses at the top and bottom (usually 2 extra at the top, 1 extra bottom - check the before and after pics). Are stringers just doing whatever they please? Did I get a bad guide? Is there going to be much appreciable difference either way?

I'm stoked about my new stick! Playing with it tonight.

At this late hour, the original pic appears to have the correct pattern. I believe you are short the two top crosses and the bottom cross(although one could argue that the bottom cross at #7 really is too low and #8 would be too high). There will be additional stress on the impacted strings at the top of the hoop on any shot hit high or in the 'corners'. Simply, there are fewer strings to absorb the impact in that area, thus increasing the stress on the ones that DO take the hit.

odd...

Very odd. I got the pattern for the strings at http://www.sptennis.com/patterns/FramesHead.html, from a thread here on TT. The pattern is listed as an 18x19 on that site. You guys are right, I am missing 3 crosses (2 at the top, 1 bottom). However, the directions DO state that the start and end crosses are at 9. Verdict - bad instructions.

Lame. Oh well, I'll play with it this way until I break strings.

Great stick, by the way! I got nearly 4 sets in tonight, and it played very well. A bit higher-pitched 'thwack' than other versions, but it got better as the strings broke in.

Okay, I had a dry spell at one place for about 6 months until today. Prince Advance Response with case. I don't think it has ever hit a ball. Bancroft Borg Personal, really nice condition. $4 apiece.

Great condition PK Graphite Ace 110 with case for 5$ and a Black Ace 98 in playable condition for 6$ but with a 1.20$ taken off (woohoo). Also a '04 Head Duffle bag for 13$. Found other great finds but this thread is for stuff I actually brought home I presume? I have a strict limit set upon me by my mother. Lol.

It was so magical finding those PK's. Especially the Black Ace. Hopefully I can find me a PS too...

Those are great finds.

I want to start a collection. It's probably gonna consist of racquets that I can see my self playing with or ones that just look cool or in great condition. And the ones I hear a lot about. Not gonna get woodies or ones that look too oldschool for me.
But I'm perfectly content with these two. Maybe I'm just going through a stage where I just want to buy buy buy! Will it go away????

Probably not. It started for me in spring of last year. I found a T3000 and a T5000 in immaculate condition in a local Goodwill. I started finding them and putting them up on the wall in our game room. A year later, I have about 75, including a number of woodies, a few metals, and a bunch of old-school graphite. I have some great old bags and cases also. I might have $500 into it total.

If you really like tennis and the history, it's a great hobby. Compared to many other sports, old tennis equipment is a bit undervalued.

Sorry, but you're hooked for life!!
Once you have discovered the adrenalin rush that you get just before entering a thrift store, you are a goner.....!
Enjoy the rush..:)

Just a few years ago I puchased on original Wilson Sting 110 racquet that had been hardly used at all. It still had the original leather grip and original factory strings with the Wilson stencil. Purchase price was $1.50, but then tucked inside the cover in the zipper compartment was a $1 bill, so ultimately I paid 50 cents for it. I put a new grip on it and had it restrung (strings were probably 20+ years old), and it plays great. It is amazing how much control this classic racquet has, without the almost impossible small sweet spot of the 85 SQ inch version.

My friend started bashing me for trying to use my old school racket...
But w/e. I'm gonna try not going too overboard. Just gonna get them old original graphite rackets. But who knows. ahahaha.

Tried my friends Sting 2 again today. Liked it better than last time. But he declined my offer. -cries-

I found a Donnay Borg Pro (4-3/8) in great condition with head cover and strung with "Donnay" labeled synthetic gut for $2.99 yesterday.

Damn that handle is long. Weight marked as "Light/Med." I measured it at 13.3oz.

Lucky! I just bought one on the online auction site and the darn thing has an unmentioned, yet quite severe warp to the head. Really angry about it, as I really wanted to hit with a good one (this one hits like crap because of the warp). If you'd like to sell...

Just picked up two pretty pristine pt280s for 50! Can't wait to restring them and have a hit.

Well done, neighbor! That was my stick for a couple of years in the '90s. Very predictable racket...nothing flashy...played great with skinny kevlar @ 45# for mains and something skinny and fun ~58# for crosses. If I wanted it to 'feel' the best, I'd likely go with a full 17ga multi or nat gut @ 58 or so.

I still haven't hit since the ortho-doc said 'knee replacement' late last year. Something like the PT might be enough to get me out there! ;) Of course, they're now saying it will rain for the next three days! :(

Fancy, that's a similar set up to my own in my modern rackets. Ever since I started hitting kevlar, haven't been able to look back. Albeit I string mine much higher than 45 :p

Of course, so did I back when all we had was Pro Blend! The reason for the low tension is my style of play. I used to hit first serves dead flat for max speed and try to bounce the kick second serves over my opponent. ;) The low tension allowed me to hit with touch but the kevlar/peek would 'bottom out' when I hit hard. I never had a kevlar/peek customer go back to higher tensions after I had them try the lower(Of course, not EVERYbody got in on the 'secret'). Try a hybrid of 18/19ga aramid 'something' mains @ 45 and TNT Pro Plus 17(remember the '90s :) ) @ 60 to see what I mean. It would be 'soft' enough to feed with all day but would stand up to some pretty big hittin' !

These are two of the more interesting racquets I picked up this past year while trawling through my neighborhood GW, in addition to that "Kennex Black Ace II" mentioned elsewhere:

I know the "string lock" feature is supposed to allow you to replace just one string at a time, thus making the job nominally easier and more economical, but was there some kind of special tool that one would use to install those string-holding nipples?

Racquets at this location used to be $3.59 a pop, but they seem to have caught on to the fact that there are weirdos like me out there who are addicted to this stuff, as everything is now $5.49 each, including all the empty covers that so often cause bursts of excitement to be followed by giant let-downs. Incidentally, why are there so many empty covers at venues like this??!!! Do people give away their covers but keep the racquets? Or do these covers and their contents have a tendency to part ways during the sorting process?

I go "thrifting" once a week or so, but the staff there told me there is at least one other guy who goes there every single day just to look at the racquets. So I am always picking through his leftovers, and he usually doesn't leave me with a whole lot to look at. :( Maybe it's better this way, as I don't have to exert as much self-control to keep this fun game from progressing into a full blown mental disorder.

Pro Kennex Graphite Comp, Volkl Servo Pro, Chemold Laver Wimbledon (Fantastic condition!), $4 apiece at a Replay consignment store today.

Sad moment though: Saw a "mint" Austrian Prestige 300 for $20. When I excitedly pulled it out of the head cover, I realized that it had been the victim of a temper tantrum, and one side of the head was caved in. A pity.

I am very surprised no one has commented on the Pro Staff 125...that is very rare in my experience. The String-loc Edge doesn't require a special tool to install the 'locs'...just a slight push with needle-nose pliers or similar will allow the insert to 'seat' in the barrel and the string tension does the rest. You might be able to re-use the plugs, but I'd recommend fresh ones if you have them.

I can't believe what you guys are finding. I haven't looked in a while but dropped off some stuff at GoodWill today and didn't see a single tennis racket in the place. :(

Regarding the covers...all sorts of ways to 'beget' extras...demos used to come with covers, replacement rackets came with covers(but you didn't return the customer cover--no need--extra cost), people used bags instead of covers....on and on. Up until the turn of the century, I didn't know of a single shop that didn't have dozens of extra covers...and no really good way to dispose of them. There were a lot of naugas who gave up their hides for those covers ;) . If someone could actually re-cycle old tennis balls and racket covers into something useful, the world would be a better place :) .

The key is fortitude. There are about six places I frequent. I hit them all on a weekly basis, spending about five minutes in each on the way home from work. Although I have "harvested" more finds from some, I have found something nice at all of them, and it is supremely unpredictable as to when something will show up. Sometimes, a particular location will run dry for four months.

Thanks for the tip on the string locks and the explanation on the covers, Coachrick. It makes perfect sense.

During all the years of dropping off unwanted stuff at the back door of that particular Goodwill, I never thought of actually stepping through its front door to have a look until last year, because I had assumed that everything inside will be just as useless as the stuff I had dropped off. It so happened that this PS 125 was sitting right there on the sporting goods shelf on that particular day...

Naturally, I was instantly hooked. I couldn't believe that anyone would buy a racquet like this, keep it for more than two decades, and just toss it out like that. One man's junk may be another man's treasure, but still, people who buy high-end racquets would presumably never think of them as junk!

A few months later, I found that "Kennex" racquet at the same store; the subsequent search for its origin led me here, and eventually to this thread, and I came to realize just how much I had been missing out on by stupidly overlooking this inexhaustible supply of cheap fixes for racquetholics. One immediate effect of this late realization is that I am now completely weaned off of Play-It-Again-Sports.

After the initial find, I made the rounds of every thrift store within a 20 mile radius of my place for a whole week to see if this was a common occurrence. unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, for my wallet and sanity), it wasn't. And clearly, not all thrift stores are created equal. The ones bordering the more affluent neighborhoods are definitely better stocked. I am told by the staff at "my" GW that during much of the year, they tend to sell what they collect locally, it's only during the peak donation seasons (spring cleaning, Christmas New-Year) that they would pool everything at their main distribution center so as to spread the goodies around. This greatly reduced my urge to explore beyond my immediate horizons, and made it easier to rationalize the high frequency of store visits to myself.

Below is the rest of my haul over the last 10 months. As you can see, nothing spectacular there (although I rather enjoy the Spalding Smasher, which was unknown to me). I guess I have averaged a little more than one pick-up per month. A good bit more than the 2-3 per year rate I was keeping via PIAS, but for about the same price. I will probably have to be more selective in the future to make this a sustainable habit however.

Sang...that's a pretty impressive collection. A Kramer Mid, I believe; R-22; and the Max Competition with the removable ball bearing weights...quite interesting.

When you said 'Spalding Smasher', I thought you meant the first 'expensive' racket I owned...the aluminum Smasher...FORTY BUCKS at Kmart in the late '60s...I didn't realize the name was resurrected for the composite.

The Genesis 660 was incredibly popular in Atlanta ca 1990...sold for ~ $200 the first year, then 'we' had them at Sports Authority a couple of years later...strung for $89...didn't even have to put them on the pegs...sold right out of the shipping boxes.

michael_1265, Austin has at least 15 GoodWill locations...7 or 8 along ONE highway!!! The GoodWill "outlet" used to be fairly close to us and I found some serious bargains for .99 or 1.99, but they relocated more than 25 miles away. I stop by 3-5 locations periodically; but it seems I'm only finding broken rackets or yet another Chemold piece of junk :) . I've still got 80 rackets on the wall and a few dozen in crates...I really need to either stop or seriously get started again! ;)

That Spalding Smasher plays very nicely. It would surprise most people.

It certainly surprised me :) Very crisp and clean, reminds me a bit of the PS85, yet different somehow. Dimensionally, it is a virtual clone of those Wilson frames - only a tiny fraction of an inch shorter, though the string pattern is completely different. It is made with "continuous length" graphite fibers, which I take to mean they are braided (perhaps that's where the similarity with the PS comes from). This is what it looks like piggybacked to a PS85:

SpaldingSmasher.jpg

TMR: I haven't had the Max Competition for very long, so I am only attached to it to the extent that none of my other racquets comes with shiny little ball bearings! This racquet is far from pristine, but most of the wear appears to be directed at the bumper (see below). It's a size 2, so you will probably have to build up the grip if you plan to play with it. I am a sucker for weird and unusual racquets, but I don't usually go out of my way to look for anything specific; if you really want this thing and have something with equally unique features to trade, feel free to email me at tschapkaATyahoo.

Just found a Prince Magnesium Pro 90. I almost left it there as I have a 110 version that I don't care for all that much - and I left both a Magnesium 110 and a Prince Pro at a different shop on Monday for $1 each. I said what the hell - it's only $5 and some folks think of this as the GROAT. I hit with it tonight with what appear to be the original Prince strings from 1986. It was very smooth with no metallic feel. It is softer than the POG with less spin. It and the POG are a 14x18 string pattern, but the spacing is tighter. The mains have about the same spacing as the 14 center mains of the Diablo Tour. The crosses are tighter as well but not quite as close as the 18 center crosses of the Diablo. It hits a ball more similar to the Diablo than the POG. I don't know how often I will play with it, but is is fun.

These are from my recent trip to 2 thrift shops.

The RQ-180 cost me the equivalent of 3€, the Vacuum cost me 5€, and not pictured here is a PlayStation 1, also 5€. Now I'd like to know what these play like!

Quick edit: stupid phone seems to only have focused on the Fischer... The Yonex is in quite splendid condition though.

Edit 2: Aaargh, so disappointing! I found a crack in the yoke on the Fischer! Might get that repaired though, but I'm rather disappointed!

You should be really happy with that Yonex. From the condition of the grip, it has had very little use. I too have bought a couple of racquets at Goodwill, only to find small, but significant defects upon further inspection.

Oh, too bad! That model Fischer is the first model they made with the mold that eventually became the forst three versions of the Pro No. 1... and is also probably the best version of all!

Well, the strings are worn but actually the previous owner seems to have taken care of it really well! Just some very minor paint chips and light scratching at the bumper.

I'd love to test it fully actually... Plan was to get both restrung. It'll work perfectly fine with the Yonex, just take it down to the shop and hey presto, new strings, but with the Fischer I may have to consult a friend to do it VERY carefully and then give him a return favor at any given time.

I just picked up my third St Vincent 6.0 mid in a year. This one is an early bumperless one in my grip size (4 1/2") It seems like someone is telling me I should be using this racquet. My strokes disagree. I think I'll be making some posts in the For Sale section soon.

Is that the case with all of the St Vincent's you picked up? Try changing the string. I like a soft synthetic gut at 58lbs for both control and power. Prince Synth. Gut with duraflex is nice but doesn't last long. But oh, so much control! If you have proper technique enabling the kinetic chain by turning and then bending your knees you should have fun. Serves and volleys are oh so sweet!!!

No pics, but picked up a Prince Graphtech DB 90 with original case for $3. The grip is pretty well dry rotted, but the frame appears to have never been used.

Saw a Prince Longbody (not sure which one) this weekend, but didn't have time to fully check it out. I'll go back this weekend to see if it's still there.

I haven't found any real steals at any of the stores I go to. I think the tennis public around here is too knowlegeable about what they have and make other arrangements to sell or trade.

I found a T2000, I FOUND A T2000!!!

Old Wilson logo and all! It's a racquet I don't know much about, other than people saying how terrible it is yet envying Connors for successfully wielding one.

There was also a Yonex R-4, but I decided to pass on that.
