Fed & Murray finals...how will the crowd respond?

I know this audience adores Fed, but how will they be if he and Murray reach the finals? I'm thinking Fed will get ditched for Murray and rightfully so I guess. What do you all think will happen? It's a long way off though. Both have to win as I think Murray will have an easier time getting there.

They would never behave really disrespectful towards Murray and Im sure lots of international federer supporters will be in the stadium, but Andy will get the most support. This is huge for british tennis. So expect them to cheer on some of Roger's errors, but no yells before he second serves and stuff like that. Also depends on the match. If Fed blows Murray away, they will be supportive, if it's a dogfight, they'll be pulling towards Andy more. It's hard to feel sorry for someone with 16 GS titles.

That makes sense...we will see how it rolls out.

I've never seen a crowd be against Roger and its not gonna happen now. Everyone loves him, but they'll obviously want Muzz to win.

The wimbledon crowd doesn't absolutely love fed, particularly when he's playing the first Brit in the final in almost 80 years.

I'm sure Roger won't make the same remarks about british tennis he made in AO 2010. He'll restate that Murray has more pressure, and try to build that, but he won't remind britain how long it's been

This thread will be useless if either one of them does not make it to the final. Please at least wait until the SFs are over.

we don't need bloody reminding! 1936 1936 1936, 19 ****ing 36! 6-1, 6-1, 6-0.

Since Murray is Scottish....Federer would have 60 percent of the stadium. If only Murray was a Brit....then he would be favoured over Internation tennis son Federer.

I think if it's Fed they'll be somewhat evenhanded in their support, because Roger is so beloved internationally.

If it's Djokovic vs. Murray, I foresee Nole getting annoyed at their loud and full support for Andy, like he did at the U.S. Open last year when the crowd was fully behind Fed. It will probably just encourage him to thrash Murray even more than he would have.

Lets just hope we don't get that final. I would hate for Murray to buckle under the pressure in front of his home crowd. Of course he will probably do the same vs. Nole

If that were the case, 95 percent of the threads on here are useless...so I'm just keeping with the trend there budddddd. You are more than welcome to come back in about 4 tomorrow and then you can chime in. :)

Same here, Murray might be the one......

In this hypothetical final I can see the people being torn. It won't take much for Murray to lose them though.

English soccer fans don't need an excuse to hate.

That statement could apply to any group of football fans. Try walking into the Celtic side of an old firm match wearing a Rangers top and see what happens to you.

All my friends who are from the UK or still living there can't stand Murray.

My mum was one of his high school teachers, although she didn't see him very much. I actually was a member of the sports center he trained at, although I really didn't notice him. But people from my area all know him, btw his mum drives a VW Golf, at least she did the last time I saw her.

I have a friend who was in his year at high school and he remembers him and his mum well, he describes her a "cold hearted b****".

We all support Murray, I hope he wins, and I'm a Federer fan.

The Wimbledon crowd is rather well behaved compared to crowds at other slams. Don't expect football-like hooliganism support for Murray. :)

This is one of those occasions I wish there had been a lot of rain delays with no roof. A Monday final, with all the proles in the stands, would be absolutely fantastic in terms of atmosphere.

This is what I wrote in the other thread similar to this:

Also you have to remember at the time Fed played Agassi at USO in 2005, he was only a 5-time slam winner. He was still relatively unknown to casual tennis/sports fans. So that's why Agassi had a huge home court advantage that year.

Fast forward 7 years later, Fed is playing Murray as a 16-time slam winner.

Fed is now more respected and loved around the world in the same way Michael Jordan was in his later years. Even a lot of my sports fans who don't follow tennis know his name. To many it's just a treat just to watch him to appreciate him while he's still playing and still at such a high level for his "age". So its' extremely hard to root against him especially since he's an elder statesman and still maintains a classy professional attitude when he goes about his business.

Jordan when he came back for his final two years on a crappy team (Wizards '01-'03), lots of fans were turning out just to be able to watch him play one last time. Sure he was nowhere near his prime, but he was still performing at a very high level especially considering his age.

I think Federer is basically an adopted hometown favorite at every major tennis tournament that isn't Nadal or Novak's stomping grounds. Hell even in Madrid they root for him more than anyone that isn't named Rafa, including the other spaniards like Ferrer or Almagro.

I think the crowd will be split closer than you guys think it is. I think the crowd will be 55-45 in Murray's favor, with a good portion of Murray's fans also rooting for Federer. There really is no villain in this match. If Fed plays Nadal, the crowd clearly is rooting for Federer minus the one guy in the audience that always shouts "I love you Rafa" whenever they played.

Nah, I don't think so. Other than the French Open, the crowds at Fedal matches are never overwhelmingly in favor of one or the other player. I remember the Wimbledon finals in 2006-2008, the crowd was never pro-Federer. I actually thought more people were rooting for Nadal considering Federer had been cleaning house every year since 2003. Especially Wimbledon 2007 and 2008, the crowd cheered more for Nadal IMO. They wanted Nadal to shake things up.

At the AO, the crowd support for both players was dead even this year. In 2009, I think more people wanted Nadal to win. I still have bad memories everytime I think about the AO 2009 final, Nadal making outrageous one-in-a-million passing shots and the crowd exploding in applause. I am surprised that Roger shook it off and pushed it too 5.

Anyways, I agree with you that the crowd might be more split than people think. When Nadal played Murray at Wimbledon 2010, the crowd was pro-Murray but not a great degree.
