I will never have such low expectations for Federer again

I think all the Fed fans agree. Before the match even started. I was 100 % sure that Fed would lose to Murray but even though he played crap in the last 2 matches he still found form just in time.

This really is a lesson to be learned. Such champions never go down easily in big matches, especially on a surface that suits their game. Federer proved once again today that he can never be ruled out.

Not sure if tomorrow he comes in as the favorite but he definitely has a chance, a pretty decent one I'd say.

I always thought Federer had a 40% chance, which is more than sizable. I also thought Federer is more likely to beat Djokovic than Murray on this surface this year. I'll say it's 50-50 tomorrow against Djokovic.

I agree. This is one thing we have to give Romeo and Russeljones props about.

They don't give up on Roger.

Romeo is probably a happy camper after winning that bet.

LOL, going into the match I favored Fed to come through in a tough match. But after the first several games I thought, "Uh oh, this is what it looks like when Fed finally does lose it to old age." Even when my head knows he's still got it, my Federbear heart fears for the day when he no longer does. :)

Fed's pretty unpredictable these days, you just don't know which version will show up.

However, he's remarkably consistent at the WTF. This is the 3rd year in a row he's made the final.

I rather think Djokovic is looking a bit unstoppable. He's won every single one of his matches this week and dropped only 2 sets along the way!

Federer's dropped just 2 sets, too :)

I definitely thought that Federer was going to lose. The first three games were horrendous. But he somehow picked it up once the tiebreak started.

I missed the match due to the time difference, but was pleasantly surprised by the result this morning; did Roger play well, or was it a case of Murray not performing to expectations?

Federer played pretty bad the first 3 games, allowing Murray to go up a break (the 1st game of the match was a break). He then sort of settled down a bit but Murray was still dominating till the score got to 2-4. The 7th game was on Federer's serve and this is where the match started to turn around. Federer got some good shots in, drew some confidence, and had a great service game. He then broke Murray's serve to get back on serve at 4-4. It was a really tight battle then for the first set, with both players playing well, but Federer won 7-5 in the tiebreaker. The second set was served to Federer on a silver platter by a shanking Murray.

The first set was typical Murray-Federer in a best-of-3 on a hard court. Until Federer broke to level at 4-4 in the first set. He started to compose himself a bit more, made few errors (but rarely went for his shots), Murray on the other hand turned himself into an error machine as the match went on, by the end of the match he was spraying his groundies all over the place.

I expected everything but a straight set win for Federer, you have to see it to believe it.

The thing is though, this has happened on multiple occasions before. Whenever Federer has been down in an early round of a major (e.g. Haas at FO 09, Berdych at AO 09, Davydenko at AO 10, Benneteau at Wimbledon this year), fans jump ship and exclaim their disappointment at Federer losing the match. You would think people would have learned their lesson and appreciated Federer's resilience. Considering this hasn't changed, I expect threads like "Federer will never win WTF/Wimbledon/major/matches against top 4" types of threads will keep popping up from some Federer "fans."

He is inconsistent because he constantly has to re-adjust his game to his declining abilities. For example, he may have played the backhand DTL in certain situations, now he is learning not to. He would try to stay in a rally, now he is seeking for ways to end points earlier, chip-and-charge, etc.

It is easier to remain consistent and stick to the same game plan when you are a well-oiled killing machine, like Federer was between 2004 and 2007. Right now he is again in doubt, again trying things, and you can see what he was like before 2003 when he was adjusting to the opposite change - getting stronger every day.

In the semi final match thread I was sad to see many Roger fans totally hopeless despite the match being on indoors.

If I remember correctly, ONLY I and Bawsss chose the Roger Federer in two sets option before the match..

I still believe that Roger can win on indoors when it really matters and as far as final is concerned I go for Roger Federer in two sets

I'm a fed fan and to me the most important thing is that Federer doesnt get into "the zone" as easily as before. That's why I sometime rule him out...
He almost always gets broken and then has to run after the score, which doesnt suit his game or mentality I guess.
He needs to fix that, his agressive/offensive style relies on the simple fact that he has to serve well to put his game in place.
If his serve works, you know that "the zone" is very close.

This is your own perception, because Federer's hold percentage for the year is 91%, which means he does not get broken a lot. In his prime, Fed held around 89% of the time I think.

I think the main reason as why murray lost with so-so game of feddy may be he got nervous of fed shanking shot by shot and made ton of ues in second.

So murray got nervous because Fed shanked? i think Fed lost all those RG finals, because Rafael Nadal played so bad too.

I really think Federer was suffering some kind of discomfort today - could have been his back or his shoulder but he was surely underpar

Federer can always surprise. It's dangerous to ever write him off. He's had a great season with 1 Slam and 3 Masters titles to his name. He's struggled a bit with his confidence after the disappointing USO loss to Berdych. But he usually always comes good by the time of the WTF, one of his favourite tournaments.

When he walked into the arena for his semi with Murray, he looked nervous and grim. I think he thought he would probably lose but didn't want to be humiliated. For most of the 1st set, it looked like his worst fears might be coming true as Murray quickly went up a break and almost made it a double. Then something seemed to click in Fed's mind and he suddenly started hitting his shots more cleanly and cutting down on the errors. Murray struggled to adjust and began making more and more errors of his own. After Federer edged the 1st set, he was in Fedmaster mode and hitting with much more accuracy and confidence. Murray just couldn't keep up with him. It was a complete role reversal from the start of the match.

I think Federer started out the match wanting mainly to avoid being humiliated. In the end, he avoided it so well he managed to turn the tables on Murray and humiliate him instead. It must have boosted his confidence no end.

Now it remains to be seen if he can carry over that confidence into his match with Djokovic and do the same to him. As we know, it is never wise to write off or make assumptions about Federer!

You are just full of it...Fed is a 17 slam champion and is a "Super Confident" person , not a low esteem guy like Murray

It is PLAIN STUPID to think that Fed enters the match wanting to avoid humilation.

Either you dont understand Fed or want to hype Murray.

It's taken you 17 slams to figure this out?

Fed can probably win big until 35 (if everything goes well fitness-wise). Other players have. He just won't be able to do it consistently. It's not like he will ever have another season of winning 3 slams and titles in the double digits. I think Fed fans should prepare for 2013 being a bit of a letdown compared to 2012. Fed is gonna need a breather.

I'm not hyping Murray at all but you are certainly over-hyping Fed! Federer is not some divine being who is immune to the normal stresses and strains, fears and anxieties of most tennis players. Winning 17 Slams doesn't automatically mean he's going to walk onto a tennis court fully confident he is going to win! If that was the case, he would hardly ever lose would he?

I called it as I saw it. He was definitely sombre and anxious looking when he entered the arena. Not his usual relaxed and upbeat self at all. And its understandable. He had just lost a match to Del Potro, for the second time on the trot, and was about to face a keen and ambitious Murray, anxious to do well at the O2 and a guy he had just lost fairly heavily to in their previous 2 meetings, the last one only a few weeks earlier! Why wouldn't he feel a bit nervous and concerned? He's only human and it would only be natural.

He certainly showed these nerves in the first few games of the match when he hit many errors and almost went down a double break. Then he managed to settle into his game and as he forced more and more errors from Murray, he settled into a rhythm and began to play with more confidence and aggression. The rest we know.

Nothing wrong with saying any of this. I wasn't having a go at Federer. He performed remarkably well to overcome these nerves and start playing like the great champion he is. It's certainly not always the case, is it?

Get over yourself and stop treating Federer as if he's some kind of god. He isn't. He's just human like the rest of us even though his tennis can appear godlike when he plays to form.

There is so much difference between saying that and saying Fed enters a match with an intent not to get humilated.

Given his age and his opponent's prime, he may not have been sure of a win, but saying that he was nervous because of a humilation prospect is pretty darn ridiculous.

Easy now. I voted Federer in 3 before the match started. At least give me some credit for getting the player right :)
