What does the world think of Bernard Tomic?

Australia excessively hype him up. He has a huge status here. We are a deluded bunch - whenever a tennis player from this land shows promise, we don't stop talking about him, especially during the AO. I imagine the anticipation and adulation diminishes, in terms of media hype, when he is not in Australia and competing overseas. So those around the world, how good do you think Bernard Tomic is? Does he really have the potential to claim a few GS's and crack the top ten? Has the corporate Australian media done its job to convince me that, in fact, he is the big deal?

Tell you what, he surprised me in the Federer match at this year's AO. Serve and forehand have improved. He's got skills. Unorthodox style. I mean, he's legit I think. Cocky, but he's for real. He'll be top 10 in a few years. Slam contender likely by his mid 20s.

Off topic, but your location says "The Black Lodge". Excuse my geekiness, but are you a fan of Twin Peaks?

Don't like him, doubt I ever will...but what he showed in those first 2 sets against Fed tells me that he'll be a major contender in a couple of years.

He is very arrogant. He was telling Rafter during their time together in Davis Cup that he was going to come out and beat this guy and that guy 6-1 6-2 6-2. This amongst others was the reason he was kicked off.

He has come out this year and "suddenly" he's a bit more humble. Called Ken Rosewall, Mr.Rosewall during his speech after winning Sydney but then again has also made some other stupid comments like Federer has to make it to 3rd round.

I think he's making an effort to be a bit more humble so the public/press get off his back but to me it's fake. At the end of the day, deep down he is arrogant brat and it's such a shame because he is talented and we need an Aussie to lead the next generation but this guy drinks too much of his own bath water for me to get excited about him winning tennis matches.

Jerez. Some angry ass people here.

He's just a kid for God sakes.

I'm sure all of the TT arm chair 5.5s could handle the pressure of fame and GOAThood better.

:D

Too early to tell, he is just 20. He's very confident, unique style.

No one can tell you, a punk? Most are at 20, so what.

Hewitt was rather arrogant in his youth, similar to Tomic's attitude. The latter backed it up. Let's hope the former can do the same.

Because he is not a home grown product to me, I am unwilling to look past his excessively irritating and highly cocky personality, and so, I do not particularly root for him to succeed, although I certainly will not lose any sleep if he does succeed...he can have whatever success he deserves in my opinion, but I cannot be bothered with going out of my way to wish him any extra good luck; that's all. If he were a home grown product I might be able to overlook his staggering arrogance.

There's been plenty of kids his age and younger that have handled themselves with more humility. Being young is not an excuse for being a cocky little arsehole. More often than not, young cocky arseholes grow up to be old cocky arseholes.

Yea, sure, you've been a saint all of your life. Tired of the human race, all think they are perfect, and love to jump on people when they make a mistake. Self righteous ignorant fools, but heh, the world is full of them!

I think he is a talented blowhard and a prat. I did like watching his tennis at the AO this year, but I wish he would stop talking to the press.

I would probably find it more annoying if I were in Australia and constantly exposed to the hype. As it is, from the outside, I do not have any negative sentiments towards the guy. He's 20yo, he's in the top 50 and likely to go a lot higher by the end of the year, so he should be cocky. You would be too, if it happened to you. But no, the angry posters on these forums are at home typing messages on TT, while 20yo Tomic wins matches in the ATP, drives fast cars and dates sexy b****es. I say good for him.

He's an alright player but and too cocky for my liking. The Australian media talks him up like crazy. However I'm impressed by his performance against good ol' Federer

The key thing for Tomic now is to get into the top 10 where he doesn't have face Fed/Djoko/Murray until the QF.

I believe that Tomic will be contending for Slam titles in the future.

He's got a lot of talent, but seems like a spoiled punk who just doesn't have the desire. I would like to see him really be successful but I'm not holding my breath.

He is talented having good serve, forehand, court coverage. He can upset top players time to time. But playing like that consistently at all tournaments I don't see him do it.

he really improved his serve and fitness from last year.

see both Federer matches of AO 12 & 13 ... huge difference.

He is thought of as an arrogant jerk with an inflated sense of self-entitlement who has, as yet, amounted to nothing but being a mug on the tennis court.

Tomic after the Federer loss...

He has everything he needs to succeed (ie break into the top 10). He will just have to work really hard... conditioning and strength which it seems like he's doing.

As a thinker's player, bernie really needs a change in coaching. I think a Bernie/Brad Gilbert combo would be absolutely devastating.

Who cares about the cockiness... he's 20. Despite his comments during the Fed match, I think he's one of the few young players who feels like he belongs w/ the top dogs.

It's a mixed bag. Some think he will be a top 5 player.
I think he's improving in front of our eyes but his movement is too slow to get to #1. At some point his confidence seemed to cross over into arrogance. He's only 20 so I cut him slack and he was gracious in defeat against Fed.

If the kid could get a hold of a proper dose of humility, the sky is the limit. Until then, it will be a wait and see approach for me. I don't hate him or dislike him because of his immaturity and other shortcomings.

Sometimes it takes being taken down a few notches to realize that you need to shut your mouth and replace your jawing with extra work/effort. If he can gain some maturity, he'll be a serious threat at the majors for years. Only time will tell.

a few more proper beat-downs from Federer and the rest of the top 10 would do wonders for this kid... if he learns from them. I think he has the capacity to, but i wonder about his team, if they are up to what it takes to keep him on the right track mentally, or if they are more concerned with creating a celebrity superstar (on the Australian level).

He should seek out help from Rafter, Hewitt and those guys. Davis cup would be good for him.

Right now, it's all too Hollywood.

Not to sound like a complete grammar ****, but latter means the last in a series, and former means the first. Tomic ain't done sh1t.

Right, I see. So the fact that not everyone is perfect means he has special permission to be a blowhard. I see...
