So how mind-numbingly slow are the courts this year? Same old same old or did they manage to get them to be even slower?
Miami is slower. Indian Wells is pretty neutral imo. But Miami is like purple clay.
I hear from some friends that it is in fact much slower this year. I'll be out there tomorrow to confirm what they're saying.
In about 5 years, I imagine it will be about as slow as clay.
I have a goofy but related question - is the grittiness of the courts the cause of them looking so beat up already?
Do these endless slow court crybaby threads have to be started for every atp tournament? If so many hate the way the courts play today then quit watching the matches.
Go watch the old time fast surface serve contest tennis and quit whining about todays courts and game.
Yes according to Stakhovsky it's been slowed down even more:
Also I'm pretty sure their are clay tournaments faster than IW and Miami.
If it has been slowed down then it is a disgrace for tennis and from the USTA the fact is the American number 1 John isner on a super fast court with his serve would be lethal! The tournament officials should have considered this and prepared a lightning fast surface! Slowing the courts down universally is runining our sport.

Dude... just stop.
Horrible, but I think it's faster than Miami. Everything is faster than Miami, Madrid is, for sure.

Indian Wells a fast surface? Faster than Cinci, for example? What are you talking about?Lol, you don't know what you're talking about. Indian Wells is known as a fast surface. It's second fastest to USO. How do you come up with the idea that they are "even slower?" I don't know about this year, but in the past they've been very fast. Man newbie, just 64 posts and not wasting your time getting info wrong and starting a wrong trend, do you?
They clearly want Nadal and Djokovic to do well. $$$

Indian Wells is slow (and higher bouncing than Miami).
Miami weather is very heavy and humid, and that usually makes the balls slow down through the air and bounce less than the same court in a more dry weather (for example, Indian Wells).
Hamburg for example (which is on clay) is also very heavy and humid, so it is very slow and the balls bounce less than in other clay courts (that is why some Spanish clay courters, like Bruguera or recently Nadal, didn't like it).
Both Miami and Indian Wells have always been terribly slow, but Indian Wells has very dry weather (so the balls travel faster through the air and the bounce usually is a bit higher than in Miami), whereas Miami's heavy and humid weather makes the balls slow down through the air more and the bounce is a bit lower.
Ha ha. Dream on. Have you even been watching the tennis? Indian Wells is not fast at all - it might be faster than Miami and Roland Garros but it's not fast at all.Lol, you don't know what you're talking about. Indian Wells is known as a fast surface. LOLz. If Isner were capable of at least winning the insignificant American tournaments, it would be one thing. Losing left and right to nobodies is hardly motivation for the organizers of the biggest tournaments to cater to the needs of a non-top 20 player.

It is about giving the hottest prospect in a country steeped in tennis history the best chance! Ideally I would have liked to have seen a lightning quick court prepared which barely allowed for rallies of 3 shots or for the opportunity for big serves to be returned but unfortunately the powers that be have kept going with these slow decks which is making the game a battle of attrition and devaluing attacking first strike tennis.
Uh -- NO. Totally wrong. I play at the IW Tennis Garden quite often.
The IW courts are extremely slow -- actually it is a special unique extra slow and gritty surface made by Plexipave just for IW to help combat the "quick" warm dry desert air that makes the ball fly faster.
So it a bit of a strange in-between. The surface is very gritty and slow but the ball moves fast through the air.
But IW is nowhere close to being a "fast court" - not even by a long shot. Second fastest after US Open? Yeah right. And the US Open isn't even "fast" - Cincy is much quicker as are quite a few others.
