Ok, ive never played with cyclone or energy, have played with bhbr - wasnt that impressed - but i don't have the swing path/technique for pure topspin shots, im more deep flat hitter.
Currently have tour bite at 52lbs - very good string, but its really giving me shoulder/ especially elbow problems.

On stringforum black edge is described as soft - i really like the softer string.

1 last question, is have you ever played with poly tour spin - if so how does it compare in tension maintenance

If you are a flat hitter, not sure you would get much benefit from any poly. Tour Bite is harsh.

Never played with Poly Tour Spin but did play with Poly Tour Pro yellow. Was ok, nothing special. Lack of feel and spin. Can't say much about tension maintenance yet. Only played with BDE for 4-5 hrs. So far so good.

The polys that stood out to me in chronological order are Lux BB Ace, Cyclone, Ltec 0s/4s and now, BDE. These are/were special strings.

1. BDE / multi = fail
2. full BDE = great
3. gut / BDE = ?

My Tonic 15L/ltec 4s was about to snap so I was going to string it up with the same setup at 55/50 but I saw BDE and I thought I'd give it a shot as a cross since I love gut/poly (specifically gut/4s) so much. I'm hoping that higher tension will make it more stable in hot weather and against hard shots. Also 4s is pretty stiff so hoping BDE will be a little easier on the arm as a cross. Hope to play Mon night...

How does Black Edge compare to L-tec 4S, is it more powerful, better tension maintenance, or softer?

^ Will be interested to know how long playability lasts. That for me is key.

There's also a string called Starblast and Black Sense - anyone tried those?

It's hard to compare apples to apples cuz i've never used 4s in a full bed, only 0s/4s and gut/4s. Full bed DBE (all this time I've been spelling BDE) is soft, plush, powerful. After tonite at least i can compare gut/4s to gut/DBE. DBE/multi i did not like at all but i was never a poly/multi player anyway.

Comparing 0s/4s to full DBE, DBE has more power, spin and is softer. Both have excellent control. To me full bed DBE is like what I always wanted in BHBR (which has plenty of spin and pop) but with much better control. BHBR/BHB7/Cyclone have excellent pop and spin but DBE has the same pop, spin but better control due to more pocketing and less unpredictable launching.

I bought a reel to see what the fuss is about. Would have bought a set but the set v reel price is ridiculous.

It had better be good because its 50% more than the cost of a reel of Cyclone....

4th Test

Gut/4s > gut/DBE.

Gut/DBE is very good but not great like Gut/4s. Gut/4s gives a little better feel and is more dynamic. Gut/DBE is stable and gives great spin but my experience is that DBE needs to be played in a full bed to really shine.

Hybriding DBE is like driving a Ferrari in LA traffic on a Friday afternoon. You gotta go full bed to let that baby loose.

Wow. Glad to see all of the input. I agree when TenFenLA regarding the feel and dynamic of Gut/4G. It has excellent control, power is there on demand, and explosive when you want to to unleash the beast. I look forward to trying DBE for myself soon.

What are you thoughts in regards to Cyclone Tour since it has more power and is a bit softer than the regular Cyclone.

I never tried Cyclone Tour so I can't say. But I LOVED Cyclone due to its pop, spin and control. Seems like the consensus is you give up a little control for more comfort and power with CTour. Cyclone is the only string that I actually used up the whole reel (3 of them).

good stuff.

i checked the reel price of DBE. the listed price includes VAT. they should not be charging for VAT when shipping goods overseas to the US. when i buy stuff from vendors in the UK, they always subtract the VAT from the advertised price when i check out. not sure why Dyreex doesn't do the same. think i'll email them to inquire why they're charging us for a tax we should be exempt from.

like TenFanLa, i love Cyclone for its spin and control. i've tried Cyclone Tour at +3#s higher and the level of control and spin are nowhere as good as regular Cyclone. sure, it's softer than regular Cyclone, but control was not good for me. i think control might be a bit better if i bumped up tension +5#s but likely at the expense of comfort.

Looking forward to hearing comparisons with another favorite 5 edged string of mine. ;)

I was wondering if the edges of DBE were rounded or sharp? I was considering trying this as a cross for natural gut. Can you describe how it plays with ng?

My personal experience is DBE has noticeably more power and spin than B5E. Control for both are excellent. I can't imagine using B5E in a low powered stick but in a higher powered stick like PDGT, Extreme Pro, etc. it works well.

B5E is smooth 5 edges while you can really feel the edges on DBE like with Cyclone.

You can definitely feel the edges but it's not crazy sharp where it will eat thru the gut mains.

Gut/DBE is the best combo I've used except for gut/ltec 4s. But it's matter of preference. Gut/4s is better for Djokovic/Federer hit thru the court with spin type of swing. Gut/DBE and full bed DBE are better for Nadal extreme topspin type of strokes.

higher powered and more spin than B5E probably won't work as well for this player that likes the lower tensions.

B5E as a cross really sawed through natural gut. If this Dyreex is sharper, I would think your gut won't last long.

torres,

please define a little bit more precise the term "old guys". as it happens, i am an old guy (soon getting 49) but i have already been "molded" into the borg/vilas - topspinner generation, so give and take a couple of more years, it is not surprising to see some 50+ "old guys" running around with two-handed backhands and ripping the felt off the ball.

Guys that learned to play in the 1950s....

No disrespect intended, but I would consider them old guys that play a different style of tennis that isn't based on a heavy topspin game.

i was not taking it with any disrespect, at least in my reading! and i perfectly agree with you, that in the vast majority of cases, players around 65 years old are rather of the flat hitting kind and rely heavily on sliced backhands, so neither poly nor kevlar would make much sense since there is rather minimal wear on the strings and a gut or multi would last well into at least a month or two giving all the benefits for such a game.
i think i said it often enough, and will repeat it even if i occasionally get flamed: if you can't break synguts/multis within 4-5 hours you have no business in poly.

mad dog1,

i assume you are that flat hitting kind of player i was talking about as the flames you sent are quite impressive:).

please be so kind to elaborate what the benefits of using poly are for you.

fgs, i was just obliging w/ the flamethrower pic. no, i don't hit flat at all. i've got a few more yrs before i'm in "old guys" club. currently i'm in purgatory. not a "young buck" nor an "old fogie". ;)

i use poly because syn gut/mult depending on gauge (16 or 17) breaks in 3-5 hrs.

well, then you definitely have a business in poly and sort of confirm my "theory" (or should i call it scientifically "hypothesis":)).

as a matter of fact, have you tried full poly too? my observation was, that besides lack of touch in fullbed, full poly with me lasts less than any hybrid with sgut or multi. another weird find during the last three years since i have started my poly testing craze was that while syngut lasts about the same hitting time as poly (talking about 16L gauges for both), i do get more time out of the poly when crossed with multi - now this has to be taken with "a grain of salt", in the sense that the mains to indeed last longer but the multi usually breaks within 2-2,5hrs and i usually restring crosses once - so i get about 4-5hrs out of the poly mains but with two sets of crosses.

i have occasionally played a/b with full poly and hybrid with the same poly in the mains, and i found that there is not more spin to be obtained by full poly nor is control better.

reads like you need to get out more...

These old guys can be good. I played this guy in the open bracket of our club champs earlier this year. Super controlled game, could drop the ball on a dime, came in behind his slices, serve and volleyed, great volleys, great hands etc. All the rallies where I had him pinned to the baseline but all the points at the net he was winning. I couldn't think of a good way of playing him. He gave absolutely nothing away and over 2 setsI think he made 5-6 unforced errors and he wasn't pushing either. Constantly hit a lot of long, short or angled low skidding slices which forced me to hit up and play into his net game. He had a lot of variation which made it hard to get into a rhythm and he had a lot game intelligence. The guy was good.

He wasn't playing a baseline bashing super spinny topspin game though...

switched to poly/syn gut cause multis weren't lasting but a few hours. however getting good mileage out of syngut/multi in the blx blade.

reads like a really talented player. not so fortunate here. can sometimes hang with those baseline hitters but depends on how well i'm seeing the ball. no problem hitting the topspin off both wings but can't rely on those shot only cause the legs won't hold up. got to bring game to the opponent and see what happens...lol

very generous and kind of you, thanks! appreciate the offer.

hmm...i've never thought to try syn gut/multi before. i can see how multi being so soft won't notch the harder syn gut. i've recently started having alot more success with poly/multi hybrids so might have to give this a try. after all i have quite a few sets of gamma professional still.

Well, I´m one of those recreational players who can play with a multi for more than a year without breaking (playing in average perhaps 1 or 2 hrs per week, more during the summer, less in the winter season). Anyhow, I gave once RPM Blast a try and was very impressed by the grip on the ball suddenly available. OK, a bit more power would have been nice but I managed to adjust my swing fairly quickly. Just too bad that the fun lasted only for 4 or 5 hrs until the string went more and more dead. I concluded that playing poly is potentially great but that it would require more frequent re-stringing than I´m willing to be bothered with. In other words, I would have business in poly if playability would last longer. Just ordered a set of DBE...

I'm not feeling the love.

Strung it in an Angell TC100 (unstrung 320/310mm/63R) at 50lbs CP, and it played okay. Freshly strung, its really quite powerful and surprisingly springy. Good spin to it initially.

It's in a similar class of string to BHB7, Black Magic, Cyclone and Pro's Pro Blackout. It has some elements of each of them. Not the crispest of strings, in fact, unless you're crushing the ball, it feels a bit rubbery. Hard to feel the ball on touch shots. The string also seems to stiffen and lose a bit of feel with hitting and doesn't seem to have same elasticity after a few hours hitting as it did when it was fresh.

It plays alright, but I'm not feeling the love. Think I'm going to up the tension and also try it in a different racquet and also as a hybrid to see if its any different, as I've ended up with a reel of this stuff. I'm also wondering with its slight rubberiness it would better complement a stiffer racquet rather than a flexier stick like the Angell.

Hi Torres,

Thanks for the post. I'm grabbing a pack later this week with the view to using it as the string of choice on my Angell demo racquets herein Australia.

Will certainly string hire after your review. Likely 55.

Thanks

^ I like to feel the ball on the strings, so it wasn't quite ideal for me in the Angell. I prefer a Black Magic / Volkl Synth Gut hybrid in that TC100 but will hit some more with the full bed Dyreex to see how its playability changes.

Keep me posted. Would love to hear your thoughts as you go.

I've got a tc95 18x20 70ra (as well as a tc100) that will be strung with it also. The tighter string pattern and stiffness may suit it better.

I'm going to have a dozen racquets that will be sent out for demos, and trying to find the perfect string is proving expensive and time consuming!

I agree with your sentiments. Some racquets are definitely more suited to some type of strings than others. You also may not need to go as high as 55 in that 95/18x20/70ra.

Torres & dborg - how long did it take for you to receive them after purchase?

As (i emailed dyreex for free samples - accepted) 3 weeks ago and last Thursday they sent me another email with tracking no, as it was sent out on Thursday - the french don't work on Fridays - they have 3day weekend,
checked the tracking today and its still at the same location as on Thursday- same city as dyreex in but in some courier hands, (cmon frenchy's import two words - WORK ETHIC).
Just don't understand why it took them over 2weeks to post them to me, most likely receive them by next Monday- still has to travel the whole of France (I live in U.K)

By contrast i bought 2 rackets from America last week, 1 racket from L.A- Wednesday, 2 racket Florida-Friday, both being delivered by USPS- both already at airports - they should get to me by this weekend.

Any one try this in on a Head Graphene Speed Pro and can compare against Volkl Cyclone Tour? I am looking to see if anything beats Cyclone Tour in a full bed setup.

My reel of DBE arrived today. Should have an Angell TC100 and TC95 strung in the next 24 hours.

TC100 - 55 pounds
TC95 - 50 pounds

Torres seemed to think the TC100 needed more tension. The TC95 is 18x20 and 70RA so I should be able to go lower with that.

Will post results.
