John Isner is clearly a considerably better player on US soil than he is on foreign soil.

Here are the stats

John Isner has won 8 ATP tournaments: 6 in the US, 2 outside of the US
He has lost 9 finals: 8 in the US, 1 outside
meaning 14 of the 17 finals he has contested have been in the US
He has reached 2 Masters series finals both in the US
His best Grand slam showing was the QF at the 2011 US Open.

What do you make of this and where would rank John Isner if the whole tour was played in the US and if no tournaments where played in the US?

For example:
on US soil #10
off US soil #50

14/17... i was thinking on this earlier this week !
(make it 16/17 for english-speaking countries)

there's a similar (but softer) trend for roddick:
33/52 finals in the US
46/52 finals in english-speaking countries (including canada/montreal, ok) ;)

He would likely be in the top ten if they were all on American soil. He often hovers just outside there as it is and that is primarily on the strength of his US tournaments. Not sure what other conclusion to make.

In 2012, Isner beat Federer in the Davis Cup on clay @ Switzerland 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-2. And as we recall, Federer was in very good form in 2012. Federer was on a 26 match winning streak heading into the AO semis (Nadal stopped him), and went on to win Wimbledon. Speaking of Wimbledon, Isner won THAT marathon at Wimbledon. And Isner is one of only 2 men ever to push Nadal to 5 sets at Roland Garros. So we see glimpses of Isner doing special things away from US soil. The potential is there, and Isner may converge with his potential eventually.

He's actually in the top 10 after this week. ;) Tsonga's now #11.

I didn't realize he would be in the top ten, but I did start to note that he had been there before briefly, so it stands to reason he would be at least that good if his whole schedule were there. And, he has played well on all three surfaces in the states. I believe he has won Houston (clay) and Newport (grass) in addition to his HC success.

Ah, big man Isner. I just loved it when people called me an idiot for saying he'd have a more successful career than Donald Young.
