LeeD: what level of play is this?

Depends how well Cheetah plays matches. But I'm not giving a number on this thread. No way.

Its all about how you play in matches. Dudes with some rough technique can make it work it matches if they have the movement and speed.

Guys with nice technique and too much ego and frail mentality can collapse completely and lose to players who look worse.

I'm one of these people minus the ego lol

Tall thin hatless guy, 4.5, wiith lazy movement on the vid.
Hat guy, trouble keeping up, lacks depth and penetration.
But hatless guy knows hat guy is having trouble picking up the ball, so why is he rallying so hard, deep, and with no regard for hat guy?
Makes for one side rallying.
I stopped looking at 37 seconds.

It is definitely good hitting but I will abstain ever giving a rating here. I'll stick with Topspin Spin. But again, good players.

Hatless guy, another who hit forehands and backhands on the same side of the racket... Very strange, hope he doesnt volley that way.

Actually, I rated MOP 5.5+, LawMan 5.0, MattLin at 4.5+, ClintThompson 5.5+, TBalla 5.0, and a few other guys pretty highly.
Yes, I rated the groundstroking of Milos at 5.0 at best, but he missed one of of 3 shots regularly, and shanked most, a vid of him hitting very badly. I KNEW Milos was a 7.0, but we are supposed the judge the vid presented.

Hatless guy looks tall.
Every good shot he hits is from waist high and lower.
He seems to have problems with high bouncing balls, taking them much much softer and higher over the net.
Why not bounce a few heavy topspin looping deep balls to him?

Hatless guy is not hatless. I'm wearing a hat in that video. The video is not clear enough to show that.
I'm 6'0 tall. 182cm. Maybe I look taller in that vid because I couldn't bend my knees that day and was standing up straight most of the time. Or maybe it's the camera angle. Hat guy is taller than hatless guy.

I don't think he has an extreme BH grip

I do in that video about 80% of the time because I switched to a semi-western fh grip since you and I last played 2 weeks ago. I haven't figured out how to switch quickly to my bh grip yet and it keeps ending up in the extreme grip. There's a few shots in there where i get the grip change right and hit it with an eastern bh grip. There's a few shots in there where the rally ends with a backhand and you can see me looking at my racquet practicing the grip change.

Of all the matches that I've lost, 98% of them were to guys with horrible form. Of all the matches that I've won, 75% of them are vs. guys with more "pretty" strokes than me, but no consistency.

LeeD you missed your calling as a record guy. That reads like how I would review demos. Hilarious.

A lot of it is experience - IMO.

I'm trying to think of guys I have lost to that started later and have been playing 10 or less years and it is tough. Almost everyone I play with has 20+ years of experience.

That's crazy, but puts in perspective how tough tennis is.

Guys with ok form but tons of experience can win a lot of matches.

So question here, for someone like me who doesn't play lots of matches, how long should it take before I play matches as well as I practice?

Both decent players, but that video suggests neither of them appear to know where their shots are going ;-)

Cheetah - if that's you at the far end - get that back hand contact further in front man :D

For me it took like a few weeks or about 5-7 matches. Sometimes I also took it easy by sort of selecting opponents, ie mainly people that I thought were not aholes.

It helps if you come in with the right attitude, like I'm here to have fun and if I lose it'll be a learning experience. With someone nice and good, tell yourself that you're even willing to treat them to lunch.

I have play a few pressure filled matches for money. (It was only pressure cuz all the other guys hustled.) and lately about 9 league matches. It's really fun when you could play your full potential.

I looked for about 40 seconds.

IMHO LeeD assessment is bang on and replicates my thoughts 100%.....tho far side guy really brought the heat at times leaving nearside (hat) guy pushing back and appearing at least a full level in skill below far side guy. Relentless pace can do that to a fellow.

Can't rate without seeing points but far side guy ground strokes are solid. Not a huge fan of USTA rating anyway. You got game or you don't.

Money? I would never play tennis for money without someone neutral calling lines. That would most assuredly not end well.

You're partially correct.

It's like you're looking at some tough neighborhood in a certain part of the world and saying you'd never be able to live in it. You are right, but still there are people who live in it. Some even thrive.

These money matches are borderline appealing and repelling to me.

Cheetah, do you play USTA events (either league or tourneys)? If so, at what level? Nice hitting BTW.

Not a good habit, I advise to change that.

The strings wear out double quick.

wow. you know what? I've never thought of that. I break strings like crazy! I never made the connection that it was because I hit on the same side.
Excellent! Thanks. I'm going to give it a try today.
Appreciate the input.

Yes, I noticed that after I made that video. I'm hitting w/ a guy today that likes to do drills so I'll work on that.
Thanks.

Not anymore. I was into playing football (soccer) for the last 10 years so I stopped the league playing then. I'm planning to play again this summer.
I used to play in A and B level usta tournaments. I've never won an A tournament but I did win 2 B level tournaments here in San Diego and one B level in NY. I think B is 4.5 now. Is that right? Or maybe it's 4.0. anyone know? I have no idea really.

We can safely give you 4.5.
Problem here is insensitivity. Yours. You hit hard and deep to your buddy, he barely picks it up with his eyes, much less hit it back.
Why don't you slow down your shots, hit some shorter, so your buddy can get his groove going and BOTH of you would have a better time playing a competitive hitting session?
I've played tons of guys like you, crushing shots in warmup/practice, just like Nalbandian was doing to the Canadian Open player in practice.
WHAT FOR? Save it for the match.

I can see how you might think such from watching that video.
However, that is how RKelly and I play when we hit together. I have said numerous times in this forum that he and I have an agreement to have hard competitive rallies when we hit. That's all we do. If one guy is outplaying the other he just keeps doing it till we finish then we say thanks see ya next time and it goes back and forth. He'll tell you the same thing. It just so happens that on that day I had the slight upper hand. He'll most likely do the same to me in a few days. That vid was the closest we've come to having a friendly rally because I had physical limitations that day as normally we go full out. We only slow down/cooperate if the other guy is having a bad day then we take it down a couple of notches to let the other one get back into a groove.

I hit w/ another partner who only likes to do friendly back and forth rallies. I have another one who wants to do drills only and another who prefers playing sets. Different folks / different strokes.

Cool, if RKelly is cool with it, it's cool.
I can only judge from the one vid presented.
Yes, you can hit a good ball. Kinda old school, but very effective like Lendl's shots.

Ash,

This is a serious question as I'm looking for pointers...

Can you tell me why you think it looks that way? Can you give me any tips to improve that? (except the general leg movement. as you might already know I wasn't able to run or bend that day). Can you maybe point out a particular shot that you had in mind that illustrates that?

I'm hitting again in 90 mins so if you're online now a reply w/ a pointer or a fix would be appreciated.
Thanks

He looks like a less than mobile 4.5.
I AM a less than mobile 4.5.
Would be a good match, me lefty. I'd loop topspin shots to his backhand to start, and slice really short and wide to his forehand side.
He looks thin, so I"d slice into his body on serves, he looks like he has good reach.
He appears to have some awkwardness on shots hit directly at his legs, so hitting the short wide slice to his forehand, bringing him IN, his forehand approach going to my topspin forehand side, allowing me to hit to his feet.
He would hit heavy winners given a thigh to waist high forehand he can get to, so I gotta avoid that. However, his DTL forehand goes right into my forehand, and my natural CC high looper might trouble his backhand, up around his chin.
I can assume he can put away volleys pretty well, so it's a topspin lobfest off my forehand and deep CC lobs off my backhand, after he hit's several clean winners that I can verify.
His movement looks suspect, like mine, but different. I can still move super quick, given the left leg doesn't become the push leg. HE seems to have some limited movement, not by injury.
I can assume he has a heavy and flattish serve. Most guys with big forehands do. I"m great at blocking back the faster serves, but anything shorter and to his forehand is to his favor.
My drop backhand volley is my best volley. My forehand volleys are OK, but just gray and nothing special.
I"m lefty, used to playing righties with big forehands.
Unfortunately for me, I"m in a period of transition in my 1hbh topspin groundies from eastern to stronger grip, so I'm in between, neither her nor there right now. It will resolve in a few weeks.

Cheetah, I'd personally have rather seen some of your misses. I only watched about 10 minutes because all I saw was the other guy constantly missing (which does him no credit) and cuts between shots where there's no balls on your side of the net... to their being two balls magically on your side of the net.

I think just as much could be learned from watching your misses (and the other guys good shots) as your makes.

The best video maker/editor I've seen on here is TomT. His videos are well edited and pay equal homage to both missing and making shots. His videos look like it is actually competitive and there are things he can improve.

Watching this video... it is really hard for anyone to see anything to critique you because outside of your movement... because there really isn't any forced/unforced error on the video from your side.

No disrespect to LeeD, but I don't know how he thinks it would be a match at all. He limps around the court by his own admission and Cheetah seems to hit the corners pretty well. He could just do that and be fine.

LeeD is maybe talking about doubles here?

You guys gotta understand, experience counts for a tiny something, not much, but something.
I can play doubles at 5.0 for sure, but more comfortable at 4.5, where I won't constantly be picked on.
Most 4.0, I'm alpha in doubles.
Singles is a different story, as running is important, but more important, is the ability to trust your plant foot as you hit the ball.
I did not say I could beat Cheetah. I told you how I'd play him.
YOU decide if I have a chance or not. I"m sure NONE of you would have such strategy on the tip of your tongue, ready to type, in less than a moment's notice.
