USTA Shady Practices - Why US Tennis Sucks

I like the comments that Tim Mayotte made soon after he left his role as a coach for USTA Player Development under General Manager, Patrick McEnroe.

Mayotte said:

One big issue and an expression of the pervading arrogance is that the bosses there at the USTA PD, have no willingness or ability to deeply discuss ideas and methods. They want to produce great, strong independent players who can be flexible and adjust and yet they (the bosses) do not display any of these qualities.

We have cultural dissonance of the highest and most destructive order going on there. Jose, and to a tragic level, Patrick, feel somehow by virtue of their celebrity that their "magic" will rub off on people they control. What they are too lost to see is the word "development" in PD. As you know so well, building healthy individuals means walking through the trenches with them and helping them analyse the moral, mental, and emotional choices they (and the parents) have to make and develop a healthy strong person in the process. Hard to do when you are dictating from a broadcast booth and a board room.

USTA should care about moral, mental and emotional choices? Which organization does that? It is the responsibility of the family and no one else.

You really have to think at a deeper level man. This isn't like a lesson at your local club where you go do drills with your coach for an hour and then leave. The USTA is setting the foundation for these young athletes' careers and lives. This is way bigger than you obviously think it is.

I know just from my experiences with the USTA that they are the most frustrating people to deal with from an average members point of view. I really believe they exist wholly to make money for it's board members and not for the love of the game or any of that BS. We will have to put up with this nonsense until a scandal is discovered and brought to light which hopefully will be soon. NYT....more power to you.

They'll just replace whichever suits are running the show now with new ones. There's no shortage of capitalist pigs in america.

$120 (60 x 2) for a doubles team is highway robbery for a tennis tournament. I almost don't want to sign up because I hate giving them my money.

Many do and it SHOULD be the defacto norm.

It would be considered interference and subject the USTA to lawsuits.

Apart from enforcing the rules of tennis (no cheating) and the rules of training, like punctuality, participation, etc., such an organization cannot give allow its officials to pass judgments on other aspects of a student's life.

A USTA coach is not the same as a private coach who has more flexibility and can be hired and fired as needed by the kid's parents.

The USTA deserves to fail; the public faces of the organization have done nothing over the past two decades--except seek would-be stars (usually based on image with no talent), attempt to make everyone play the same game, and are not educated on using the entire court. Any American successes were more about the individual than any guidance from that bankrupt mob.

They begged for all of their problems.

College fans say the same about the NCAA, FIFA is a complete joke, see a pattern?

Yeah the criticism is mostly from parents and coaches whose kids don't make it to a high level to be noticed and picked up the USTA. Among coaches, there is a resentment that they are not in the elite group. The same coaches also criticize other private non-USTA coaches who run successful academies, so it is not USTA-specific.
