Perhaps Graf for footwork and she has a shout for FH as well, but you're probably looking for more interesting choices. Graf might also be the fastest.

She's also the most robotic all-time great player I've ever seen (EASILY more so than Djokovic or even Lendl). She was a quite stylish robot though.

@PDJ might give you better and more detailed picks. They know their women's tennis.

Smash - Probably one of the 70-80's players like Shriver or Sukova. Both tall, moved well played net a lot and smashed a lot.

Just my opinion.

First Serve: Serena/Brenda Macarthy
Second Serve: Serena
Forehand: Graf
Backhand: Evert, Justin Henin/Davenport/both Williams but not as pure.
Passing shots: Evert
Slice: Graf
Volley: Navratilova/King- backhand volley-/Hingis/Bueno
Footwork: Evert/Hingis/Bueno/Cawley
Speed: Graf
Fitness: Court- she practically invented it!
Smash: Navratilova
Mental Strength: Evert/King/Connoly
Lob: Evert
Drop shot: Evert, most Italians. ASV.

Agreed. Graf imo has the best forehand and maybe best mobility although I think Court, Clijsters, Lenglen and Serena are there for mobility also. I would go with Evert for backhand, Navratilova for volley. For serve it's Serena on first but Stosur for second. Maybe Court or Navratilova for first also.

Can't think of exactly which superlative to throw her way, but I'm thinking Aggie Radwanska is mentally rock-solid and also a world class chef when it comes to cooking up a lot of variety.

Also glad that Kim Clijsters is renowned as such a sweet lady. Otherwise her forehand would have left an entire generation of opponents in a state of chronic incurable sadness.

Agree that Hingis is truly a queen of great footwork.

Stosur is a good pick. Also Lenglen - one of the few points I ever agreed with Kiki on was that Lenglen, Bueno and Cawley were the most graceful of players.
Clijsters had a lovely temperament.

Very nice choices. Incidentally you mentioned Evonne. I forgot about Evonne! She is in consideration for backhand and movement. As you wrote, she was so graceful.

I think Cawley and Bueno also possessed best backhand smashes - they both hit it beautifully and almost balletic, yet very effective.

Who would you say has the best return in history?

I actually worked like an idiot last night and finished the video!

This is brilliant. Thoroughly enjoyed watching.
personally I don't agree that Graf has the best drop shot but that's a minor quibble given the effort this must have taken you.
I hope you get a wider audience to view it.
I'll add a comment on YouTube.
Excellent.

Right up there with any of the top ones for footwork/volleys: Hana Mandlikova.

She was doing SABR when Rogi was in diapers!
Another Kiki fave. He'd love this thread.

Mandlikova was too talented. Too many options. And, yes, beautiful footwork, but rather a lottery what she'd hit once she glided to the ball.
I always thought her a surly goolagong.

Cool video. And nice selection on those Chris Evert passing shots. Navratilova hit some wicked slice backhands, deep in the corners, and Evert hit some great shots.

Footwork: Vicario

Lots of choices there. Evert, Seles, Lenglen, Serena (for her aggressive attacking return under pressure), Clijsters, Henin, Wills, Connolly and Dementieva. Dementieva obviously had a great return to offset her weak serve.

You just beat me by a short time with the choice of Dementieva. LOL.

Her return accuracy and win % was god like. She won like 50%of her return games some years. She had the worst serve in the top 10 during her career but one of the best returners of her generation by far.

If only she had a decent serve. I liked Elena and I usually rooted for her. At least she won the Olympics.

Thats a bit weird. But serena's first serve is far superior to venus first serve... Venus has higher top speed by 1mph but other than that serena destroys her in placement, variety consistency, disguise and matches venus in top speed. Putting any other person in first serve other than serena is just delusional

Personally, Evert. But strong case for Seles.
Evert for first serve, Seles for second with honorable mentions for Hingis and Graf.

By the way, how often did Court miss returns of serve? I haven't watched a lot, but I can't remember bad ones off her racket.

i honestly feel serena, clijsters azarenka are in my top 5. Also dementieva. I wouldn't really know how evert or seles would do against the top servers of the past 10-15 years but considering they've rarely faced 110+ mph serves if ever i'm going to have to go with the modern players. Barely anyone ever aces serena. She pretty much gets a racket on nearly everything. Same with clijsters and she had good placement for difficult serves.

That is a great point. I respect players that are quick enough to return shots that may be aces against anyone else. Some players like that in the Men's game would be Laver, Borg, Connors, McEnroe, Edberg, Nastase, Federer, Djokovic and Murray. Agassi was a super returner but I felt he was aced a lot more than some of these guys.

Sharapova among the women may hit a lot of winners and yes she's an excellent returner but I feel she has a lot of trouble with big server like Serena or Venus. Of course almost everyone does but the players you mentioned can neutralize it to some degree. I forgot about Azarenka but her return is up there with anyone's.

I like Clijsters a great deal, but towards the end, she was plagued by double faults at the worst times. Not that were lots of doubles, but enough to lose her matches coming when they did. It was a great shame- I only remember because she was my clear favourite female player back then.

Best and most complete female player off all time without looking physical side of tennis is Martina Hingis. She lacked all physical attributes number one in wta ever had and i mean all: hight, speed, strenght, fitness. That must make her incredible mentaly to cover up those flaws and still make it as number 1 in the world.
So just combine with player who had all of this physical atributes.
And voila you have perfect female tennis player Martina Hingis with body of Serena Wiliams

Oh and as for lob, that is Evert. Off both wings, defensive or offensive and a fine lob volley. This is another category that discriminates against modern players. Very hard for them to show a consistent lob from any part of the court, when they hit so few of them.

Absolutely. Second to none. I wrote this in my original selection.
The match with the best examples, for how many she hit, and the variety Evert had, is possibly the Houston 87 Final against Navratilova. BJK commentating said they'd wished they kept stats on how many winning lobs she'd hit.
After Evert hit about her tenth (all different) winning lob, the other commentator said "oh my God, she's incredible".
She really was. :)
