Thiem will win GS titles

I caught the Federer/Thiem match yesterday. I had never really paid attention to Thiem before that match but saw the qualities of a future GS champion.

He is extremely talented and has awesome power and spin on his shots. One of his forehands had over 4500 RPM. Federer basically outsmarted him and controlled his nerves better.

I would say that Thiem impresses me more than Coric. He has a much better attitude than Kyrgios, and is younger than Dimitrov.

I see more than one GS title in his future. Look for him especially at the FO in the next couple of years.

I see the talent too. His shots remind me of dimitrov's. Main issue for him right now is consistency and when to go for the big shots.

Too many neutral shots into the net.

I think kyrgios is better. But yeah, thiem will be a slam contender at least.

Kyrgios is prodigiously talented too, but the guy is a total disaster mentally. Yes, I also think that Kyrgios will win a GS, but it might be later in his career.

Coric will likely win as well. He is fiercely competitive and has all the makings of an Ultron copycat.

Basically if Kyrgios, Coric, and Thiem realize their potential, the game will be in good hands in the post Fedalovic era.

Coric looks more like Murray junior to me, young novak went for his shots more.

No he won't. He's got good good power from both wings (bit ala Wawrinka) but his strokes are too mechanical. As a result he struggles to keep up in fast paced matches, as was clear in his match against Fed. Might get into top 10.

If Dimitrov is a Baby Federer, Thiem is much of a Baby Wawrinka. He has a lot that it takes to have a great future, especially a better attitude than Kyrgios (harder worker, less of a showman) and better shots than Coric (harder, faster, better). This season will give a lot of insight on how good he can be - last year the preparation was terrible and thus, he didn't get many great results during the first HC season. Now he started with a SF in his first tournament of the year and even beat Cilic, which is quite impressive.

We might see Thiem - Coric in the 2nd round in Sydney (if Coric beats Muller) and I think that will be a good indicator about those two as well. Coric might win if Thiem produces a lot of UE, but overall offense should prevail.

True, but keep in mind that Federer's style of play is pretty much unique. On a slower surface (clay) Thiem has enough time to go for his shots and if he gets used to playing a guy like Federer he will do a better job than today as well. Also he played a pretty solid second set, but of course Roger is still miles ahead. Thiem might be a considerable GS winner when Roger is retired (3-4 years from Thiem's view perhaps). However, this is very theoretical stuff. It takes a lot to win a grand slam and even top 10 is a major achievement for any tennis player. All the ATG talk makes us think that only dominating eras is important ;)

He has a terrible habit of standing very far back.

If he can maintain his position just behind the baseline he could be a lot better player.

He should watch video of Federer who holds his position much better against power.

Main problem of Thiem is his lack of a better serve imho. He's a mini-Wawrinka without the big serve.

He reminds me of Kohlschreiber, not in style of play but in match-to-match execution.
Kohl, in his prime playing good tennis, had such a beautiful and efficient game. But Kohl at 70, 75%, was just a disaster.

Thiem stands way far back and sometimes unloads on really silly shots. When he's playing good, he looks like a well rounded powerhouse.
But on a slightly off day he's a poorly positioned ballbasher.

I'm a fan though and would love to see him on a run of consistency.

He looks good. Honestly, all he has to do is stay fit, work hard and keep improving, under the age of 28 there aren't many top, top level players out there.

2nd set showed promise yesterday. he was very tense going up against the GOAT yesterday. First set he was stiffer than a board. He has firepower. I think he is going to be a big part of the sport in a couple years.

Can't see it. He has good skill but only top 10 wins are against Stan I think. Nothing super impressive. Can have good runs at slam but doesn't have what it takes to beat Fed, Djoko, Murray, Berdych etc (he could probably beat Nadal though)

Love that there are young players wielding the OHBH with serious authority. This last match was the first full one I've seen with Thiem. I like his equanimity, and his great game play on the fast surface. He chose the right player to emulate :)

i was court side at the match yesterday, he did impress me with his forehand and his backhand, but federer played quite a solid match. Caught thiem off guard at the start.

Out of all the juniors Kyrgios is still the pick easily for me. Lifts on the big stage, fearless against the top dogs, and the most talented as well. He just needs to want it, and he can have it.

Don't know how Thiem can top any list of slam contenders. Dimitrov has played better than him. He has went to Wimby semis giving tough match to champion and beaten the world no.1

Coric is still 19 years old. Thiem 22. So, don't know why to even compare Thiem to Coric. I don't know if he will win but I hope not before Dimitrov and Kyrgios if they do win some.

Agree 100%. Kyrgios could win 10; or 0.

Coric is going to be a Djokovic clone. And unless the surfaces speed up, that's going to make it very likely that he'll bag a few majors.

After Thiem got over the nervousness, he was competitive against Fed. At Shanghai in 2014 he gave Djokovic a decent match (3 and 4). His serve has a lot of pop. His results are steadily improving.

The only young gun that has any chance of winning a major is Kyrgios. He has a HUGE weapon that is virtually a lock, even on clay. None of the other guys have that. Don't even mention either Raonic or Dimi, both are 24-25 years old at this point. Neither qualify as a young gun.

I saw Thiem against Haase in Basel. Impressive win after losing the first set 0:6. I don't care about predictions but at this point Thiem's game seems one-dimensional and predictable. One of my favourite players though.

From what I've seen so far, I think Kyrgios will be the first one from his generation to win a slam IF he can control his attitude. He has the most raw talent IMO. I watched a little bit of the Federer-Thiem match and I didn't see anything special about Thiem. Of course that could change in the next little while so we will see.

I guess I watched a different match. Federer used only his second gear to win the first set and only the third gear for the second. Thiem is talented but he is not a championship material.

He reminds me much more Almagro than Dimitrov, have a close look at Almagro groundstrokes when he was at his best. Thiem has similar powerful strokes from both sides, and both players win more on clay (Thiem won 3 titles so far, all of them on clay).

Almagro reached the QF at the French when he was 22 yo, Thiem I believe will do so, probably in 2017 or 2018. On grass he is very bad, and on hardcourt not really good yet but will improve with time.
He is not that strong mentally, another similarity with Almagro.

Thiem struggled with sickness (stomach issues) when he was Coric' age and couldn't play much. Despite his age he hasn't more experience on the tour than Borna. I think his development is very good and steady. To win a GS a lot is needed and a prediction is impossible. We will see in a couple of years, but as long as Thiem keeps progressing everything is possible.

Thiem won't be ready to contend for slams for another 2-3 seasons, at which point I can only see Djokovic being relevant at majors. When Thiem is peaking in 5-6 years they will all be retired.

So every major from, say, USO 2018 - AO 2024, they are all going to KG? I agree that he's separated himself from his peers in terms of talent, but he's far from a lock for anything.
Other players we don't know about will emerge, and guys like Thiem or Jack Sock will surprise us by taking a big step one year. It's what always happens.

Many people did.

In early 2005? Sorry but I don't remember that. In 2006 he began to be noticed as a bright prospect for the future and by 2007 (and I mean BEFORE the N American hard court swing) he was regarded as a future threat to Fed. There are flashes of brilliance even in that Safin match but I have to say Coric looked more impressive today against Wawrinka.

unfortunately thiem has a single bh which is a terrible liability in today's tennis, unless you are called Wawrinka, a player whose bh can go toe to toe with any FH. Federer with a decent dbh would have 20+ slams by now.

it will forever remain a weakness and that will stop him from being great.

Kyrgios is the only young gun with an already COMPLETE game.

Actually quite a bit like Wawrinka himself except for the fact that he has both hands on his racquet for the backhand. Likes to park himself far back in the court and take the ball as the bounce dies. The stroke mechanics may resemble Nole most but the approach is completely unlike either him, Murray or Fed and most like Nadal from among the Big Four. Being a rightie with a really big serve and already a very assured overhead, I would still say more like Wawrinka. It's emerging that Wawrinka has found the magic formula for offense on ultra slow courts. Just wait and wait and then unload. I will be interested to see how Coric adapts on faster courts because unless he gets more comfortable with hitting on the rise, he's going to have problems in those conditions (again, not unlike Wawrinka).

Thiem hits with absolutely vicious topspin. I see him being a factor at the FO for the next several years. He has the game to win that tournament in 2-3 years and could beat even Djokovic on a given day.

O ye

Lets hope so. I have been thinking it is the 1996 class that will produce the next multiple slam winners and breakthroughs. However if the 92-94 class with people like Theim, Tomic (not necessarily Tomic specifically but others of that age group) breakthrough all the better. With Raonic's Australian Open performance, who knows maybe the 89-91 generation will even have a breakthrough, but at the very least someone from the 92-94 one would be an unexpected success for the mens game.

Will never win a Major as too unstable mentally, neither will Kyriagos, who is a blatant idiot.

Coric on the other hand is a definite future slam winner.
