Wilson Revolve 17 / Wilson Syn Gut Power 17 hybrid

Needs are for a Wilson Blade 104 weighted to 331 grams, playing style age 65 doubles all court with continental/eastern grip, accustomed to dead synthetic gut originally strung at 60 lbs.

Revolve has a stiffness of 192 and tension loss of 36
SynGut Pwr has a stiffness 158 of and tension loss of 15

At the advice of kramer woodie, I want to try the string tension of Wilson Revolve 17g at 40 lbs.

What should the string tension be for the Wilson Synthetic Gut Power a) as cross strings, and b) as main strings?

Other comments welcome. Thanks.

I can't really help you because I have not used syngut since 1970's. I will say what I imagine is syngut is usually strung fairly tight from what I remember
and have heard recently. I use to string syngut in a Yonex YY8500 in 1974 at 60 pounds. However, have no experience using it in a hybrid.

As for Revolve 17 gauge, I have used it only early last year hybrided with 16 gauge VS natural gut in the mains. The revolve in the crosses I strung
about 5 pounds lower. I did not like the Revolve used in combination with natural gut, just way too powerful and soft springy.

I do remember there is a thread regarding hybriding syngut and poly. I do not know what it was called, however, you could possibly find it by using
the search function.

Sorry I can't help you. I wish you good luck finding what your looking for in a string setup.

Aloha

kramer woodie and annubis, thank you for the help.

When considering "broken-in" string tension and allowing 25% for "effective" playability,

my estimate for the Wilson Synthetic Gut Power tension comes 38 lbs ( ! ) -

which is 2 lbs less than 40 lbs for Wilson Revolve.

So a full bed of Revolve makes more sense than the WSGP.

Thanks again

i've never used revolved but description says it is a textured rough poly. I would not use it as a cross unless the texture is very light.

Try revolve in the mains at 40 to 45 lbs and the syn gut in the crosses at +3 lbs above the poly mains.

If you aren't getting enough power then you might want to drop the poly and use all synthetic gut or a good multifilament.

Revolve is one of the smoothest polys you can buy.

I've been hitting Revolve in a demo for the past few days. It's really a great string. Super slick and round. Average spin. Average power. Tension loss isn't too bad. I would string it as a main at 50 and use SynGut in the crosses at 55. I think that would be a good starting point.

A full bed of Revolve strung at 40 caused significant racquet vibration for me,

so I have just strung Wilson Synthetic Gut Power 17g on the mains at 44 lbs and Revolve 17g on the crosses at 40 lbs.

Using tension loss information from the TW Compare strings tool, I estimate the average broken-in tension of this 44/40 to be 31.5 lbs.

Maybe this will be a bottom and I will work up in tension from there. I just want a durable, economical version of Fed's hybrid on my Blade 104 racquet.

You may be talking about Revolve Spin here that was just released.

A full bed of Revolve strung at 40 caused significant racquet vibration for me,
I also used full bed of Revolve only once. I cut it out after 2 hours. Revolve in cross is wonderful. I have used it with Head Velocity MLT main and with another textured poly main. Both gave wonderful results. Never tried with solid core synthetic gut main. I am very much interested in what you find!

Revolve Spin is a SHAPED poly (with 5 sharp edges), it's NOT a "textured" string since it's surface is SMOOTH, without any textured pattern on it.

Whereas, most true textured strings like Prince Topspin or BB Rough etc are ROUND and is not shaped.

SHAPED string =/= textured strings per se (per more than a dozen USRSA guys and actually TW here)

I just got my racquets strung with Revolve 17 mains at 52 and Gosen Micro Sheep SynGut 16 in the crosses at 57. I'll hit tomorrow and report back.

I tried WSGP 17 / W Revolve 17 at 44 / 40 and at 44 / 36. The second gave me the softness I desire but not the control.

So I have strung WSGP 17 / W Revolve 17 at 58 / 48. Broke in against the backboard, will report results after a few outings.

Thanks.

Just had my first hit with Revolve 17 mains and Gosen SynGut 16 crosses. I lost a ton of spin compared to a full bed of poly. I loved the added crispness and softness. My launch angle increased and I couldn't keep the ball in the court on a free swing. My first impression is not that great.

So I have strung WSGP 17 / W Revolve 17 at 58 / 48.

Due to 1/32 racquet head distortion I took out WSGP 17 / W Revolve 17 at 58 / 48,

and made it WSGP 17 / W Revolve 17 at 50 / 46.

Felt soft enough against the backboard, maybe more of a baseline racquet. Time will tell.

Ive used countless sets of Revolve 17 (on my Blade 98S), and tracked many of them using Racquetune. According to this tool, the string will lose ~15% of the just off the stringer tension and more or less plateau there until it breaks. I just checked the app and the last one I strung at 53 pinged at 52.9 on racquetune off the stringer, dropped and settled at 45-46 after a few hours worth of play, stayed there for a few more hours, then broke. All of this was over maybe 10 days time.

Sort of amazed at how well this inexpensive combination plays. Going to stay here for awhile.
