Former tennis player Daniel Koellerer, who became the first player ever in history to be expelled from professional tennis for life, makes himself known again after years. In his words, former world number one, Marat Safin, inspired him to begin to enjoy more alcohol. The reason was Safin's appearance in the Australian Open final in 2002, when Safin was supposed to be drunk according to Koellerer's claim.

The 36-year-old has alleged that Russia’s Marat Safin was drunk during his clash with Thomas Johansson in the 2002 final. Safin, who was seeded ninth in the draw, lost in four tight sets to the Swede. According to Koellerer, the Russian had been drinking heavily the night before to celebrate his birthday.

“The first time I started drinking alcohol I was like 24 and I just started because I saw Marat Safin drinking before he played the Australian Open final.”Koellerer said during a recent interview.

“I said ‘ok, now I am all the time between 150-180 and I don’t get up, and this guy is playing the Australian Open final, he is so drunk he can’t even walk on his two feet, cannot be that bad.'”

“He could never win because he was so drunk, that was unbelievable. The night before he was celebrating his birthday. For me he looked like he was celebrating he already won already the Australian Open.”

Former world No.1 Safin was renowned for his occasional party antics during his time as a player. After defeating Pete Sampras in the final of the 2000 US Open he celebrated at a disco with singer Lenny Kravitz. Drinking champagne and vodka throughout the night. The following day he had to conduct media commitments after just one hour of sleep.

Why drink one bottle of vodka when you can have three? Why sleep with one woman when you can have three? Safin has hardly ever done anything in moderation.

Today he is a member of the State Duma (national parliament) in the pro-Putin United Russia party.

"Yes, the strong should be in charge because they are strong. And the weak, they should be in fear."

Several of the players of old (Lew Hoad, Roy Emerson, probably Newcombe on occasion), were terribly hungover before a big match . . . and won. There is, in fact, an account of this in the Hoad biography "Golden Boy". Hungover is awful. Actually, drunk, stumbling on your feet, half-way to hitting the deck - that is another thing. Seriously doubt that Safin was drunk to such degree. No doubt he was half-hungover. Watch the match.

This is nonsense. Any combination of serious boozer and serious player can tell you that competing at that level while intoxicated is impossible. That match was 7-6 in the 4th!
Yep. And he said so drunk he could barely walk?? literally anyone who watched the match (or highlights on youtube..) could tell you that this claim is inaccurate.

On the other hand, I would love to see some of Marat's interviews following his USO celebrations :D
