Sinner rise is meteoric

Sinner is currently ranked number 2 for the first time in his career. But in everyone's mind he is the best player right now.

His record vs top 10 players currently

Vs Djokovic won 3 of the last 4 matches
Vs Medvedev won 5 of the last 5 matches
Vs Alcaraz won 2 of the last 3 matches
Vs Zverev lost only match they played in last 1 year
Vs Rublev won 3 of the last 3 matches played
Vs Rune traded 1 match apiece vs the brat
Vs Ruud hasn't played much
Vs Dimitrov won 3 of last 3 matches
Vs Hurkacz won last match the only 1 played since 2023
Vs ADM won 4 of 4 last matches.

Combined vs current top 11, he is 22 of the last 26 matches.

Currently Sinner is taking no prisoners. This is the situation at the top of the tennis, we can forget what is happening to the rest.
Just 1 year back, Sinner had lost another Miami final in humiliating fashion and was 0 out of 2 in big finals. But now he is 3 out of 4 in big finals since.

To call the rise even meteoric is an understatement. Not many expected him to dominate to this extent this quickly.

I remember Peter Bodo's statement after Roland Garros 2015.

Wawrinka played like Monica Seles. Monica Seles showed that tennis is very simple game. You hit the ball big enough, consistent enough and closer to the lines, you will win most of the matches.

Sinner's current game is very repeatable and very big. Let's see what rest of the 2024 brings him.

You think Sinner is the modern day Ivan Lendl?

I said during this year's Australian Open that Sinner's rise since the middle of last year to some degree echoes the rise Roger Federer, who is almost exactly 20 years older than Sinner*, had at the same age starting in 2003. Sinner's 2024 arc through the first three months of the year has also been similar to Fed's in 2004 (win Australian Open, win one of the two Sunshine Double tournaments).

I don't expect Sinner to reach a similar peak or to have as good a career as Federer did; it would be unfair to suggest any 22 year old player will have the same kind of career as one of the all-time greats who won 20 career singles Grand Slams and 28 career singles Masters titles. But the step forward Sinner has taken since mid-2023 has some definite similarities to the step forward Federer took at essentially the same age, especially considering Fed was viewed as a bit of a late bloomer relative to his contemporaries like Lleyton Hewitt and Andy Roddick.

*Federer's DOB is August 8, 1981; Sinner's DOB is August 16, 2001

Yes I predicted this as well. Although I thought he was going to win his first slam in 2023, similar to how Roger did in 2003

His end of 2023 and start of 2024 is similar to Federer in 2003 and 2004. We'll see if he manages to stay consistent.

He was lucky to win some matches like the AO final vs Medvedev or the DC match vs Djokovic but also looked very convincing against them in the Miami and AO semis.

I think he will finish the year YE1 but it remains to be seen how dominant he will be. Reaching this level is tough but sustaining it is even harder.

He was being ridiculed last year so happy he turned it around. Tennis is in safe hands with Alcaraz and Sinner and maybe Rune if he rediscovers his game.
Please stop mentioning him. He has achieved NOTHING in the past year

Maybe with TV and social media now things are different but it certainly doesn't seem to me that Sinner's rise was meteoric as we all have been watching him progress and move up the rankings over the past few years.

For me the big surprise was Becker's first Wimbledon win as I had no idea about this kid and all of a sudden he is winning a major and on the scene to stay.

He is playing without any fuzz, on a consistent high level. He is simply striking the ball very well, hitting it hard and long, pounding it left and right, finding the lines and the corners. Fine serve and return game, piling on pressure with every point. Dimitrov wasn't playing that bad early on, but he simply broke down to the constant pressure.. Sinner reminds me a bit of Lendl, who had a similar, simple, but effective game. Maybe it needs a player like Alcaraz, who can disrupt his striking rhythm with subtle changes of pace and dropshots..

Just a point of clarification. I HATE when people use "meteoric". Meteors are small fragments of a greater body that are plummeting down by gravitational pull and are burning out. The inference means Sinner is crashing and burning.

I was wondering about that too.... Either way he has made a pretty steady progression and I would not say he "sky rocketed" up the rankings as others players have done previously ;)

I do not think the current generation will match the slam and master stats from the big 3. Somehow i think Jannik and others will have less psychological longevity. Being under a social media microscope and having less and less privacy
It's not the privacy, it's the distractions that come along with huge success at such a young age.

It requires unique focus and a solid group of people around you to keep you grounded. Even then, you're not guaranteed to be exempt from burn out.

Only time will tell.

I think a possible clue if a player can reach Big 3 level isn't just slams. But can he have a year similar to Fed 2003/2004 or Djoker 2011.
Sinner has the chance to make this a big year, but he might already be a little behind Fed 2003/2004 or Djoker 2011.

Very meteoric. The caveat is he won’t have the roadblocks in his way like Nadal was to Fed or Djoker was to Nadal. Carlos will be a speed bump at times but not a roadblock

I think sinners career numbers is going to surprise a lot of people due to the sheer lack of roadblocks he will have. Carlos will present a little bit of an issue at times but nowhere near what Nadal was putting up to Fed with topspin to the Fed backhand in the corner for an error

I expect sinner to improve on his volley weaknesses too. Just like he has his serve this year. He may eventually become completely unbeatable

I still think his biggest roadblock is his lack of a plan B.
I think if his game isn't firing at 90% or above he becomes vulnerable to guys besides Djoker and Carlos.
Big 3 had the ability to win even when they are off. Need to see that from him to see if he can elevate near their level.

Ah, so that suits Joker very well, then.

Well stated, much truth in that.

Sinner has excelled, since Darren Cahill took over.
Cahill has probably done a lot for his growth but I think Vagnozzi has been the one that took him after Piatti and changed the way we talk now about Sinner's volley, serve, short cross FH, etc..
